The U.S. National Academy of Sciences announced on Tuesday the election of 72 new members and 18 foreign associates in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. The election was held this morning during the business session of the 144th annual meeting of the academy, and brought the organization's total number of active members to 2,025. Foreign associates are non-voting members of the academy. The 18 newly elected, from 12 different countries, brought the total number of foreign associates to 387. Two Chinese scientists, Zhang Qifa and Li Aizhen, were among the new foreign associates. Professor Zhang is the director of National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement, Huazhong Agricultural University, in central China's Wuhan. Li is from the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the advance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1863 by a congressional act signed by Abraham Lincoln. The act calls on the academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology

BEIJING -- Timothy Keating, US Pacific Command commander-in-chief, will visit China from January 13 to 16, the Chinese Ministry of National Defence (MND) said on Tuesday.During Keating's China stay, senior Chinese generals and officials from the Central Military Commission, the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), Guangzhou Military Area Command and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will meet him separately, the foreign affairs office of the MND said in a press release.The Chinese officials were expected to widely exchange views with Keating on Sino-US military ties, the Taiwan issue, and international and regional affairs of common concern, according to the press release.The four-day tour would also take Keating to the country's financial hub of Shanghai, and Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province. There, he was scheduled to visit the PLA military institutions and bases and hold a seminar with Chinese military officials."China takes positive attitude toward developing military relations with the United States, and hopes Keating's visit could further enhance understanding, expand consensus and boost cooperation, so as to promote the bilateral military ties to grow steadily in the new year," the release said.The MND was consulting with the US side on detailing arrangements of the visit.Keating was visiting China for the second time since being appointed to the post in March. He was last here in May.

President Hu Jintao will "elaborate on China's position and propositions on climate change" at the upcoming summit of industrialized nations which features a session on global warming. Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai told a news briefing yesterday: "China's population is one-fifth of the global population, which means one out of five of the world's people affected by climate change will be in China. "That is why the Chinese government takes this issue very seriously... We need to base our development on energy that is secure and sustainable." Hu will attend an expanded summit of the Group of Eight (G8) in Germany from tomorrow to Friday. The meeting at the Baltic Sea resort of Heiligendamm will bring together leaders of the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and Japan. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing for countries to commit to concrete reductions in the emissions of greenhouse gases believed to cause global warming, and for a 2 C limit on further increases in average temperature. Efforts to stop uranium enrichment by Iran, aid to Africa, currency exchange rates and global growth are also on the agenda. Apart from China, the other developing countries attending the dialogue are India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico. It will be the fourth time Hu is attending the G8 outreach session since 2003. The earlier three were in France, Britain and Russia. Coinciding with Hu's visit, the Chinese government yesterday released its position paper for the G8 meetings, outlining Beijing's policy on climate change, energy, IPR protection, investment liberalization and African development. Cui reiterated China's long-time and traditional friendship with African countries. "China and African countries have had a very friendly, brotherly partnership since the establishment of New China, since the 1950s, and that has continued up to now," he said. "It can be said that this has been widely praised around the globe," he added. "In this world, there will always be people willing to criticise others. If they want to say something, then that's their business. Whether or not it's true, is another matter." He said China also wants the United Nations to be more involved in preventing conflict. "China maintains that the United Nations has a bigger role to play in conflict prevention and settlement and post-conflict reconstruction in Africa," the paper said. "The Chinese government has been exerting its utmost efforts (on Darfur), as I understand, and appreciate," he said. Nanjing - Four people died and 16 were injured when a snow-laden fuel pump shelter in Nanjing suddenly collapsed on Sunday afternoon, according to local sources.The accident took place around 2:30 pm at the Sinopec Wujiang fuel pump station in Pukou District of Nanjing, the Jiangsu Province capital, when one van, one sedan and six motorbikes were refueling.The station ceiling, with a floor area of 1,430 square meters, suddenly gave way to the thick snow that had accumulated on it over the past few days. When it hit the ground, it engulfed all the vehicles and people beneath it, said information from the city government.It was not immediately known whether any station service workers were in the accident.The victims were all rescued from the debris and rushed to hospital immediately. Four later died from their injuries. The others were hospitalized.The accident is under further investigation.

The majority of profits came from the 216 stock-leaning funds, which have at least 60 percent of their investments in stocks. They reported total operating profits of 261.4 billion yuan, accounting for 96.53 percent of all fund profits. The country experienced a fund investment boom last year as investors shifted low-interest bank deposits into the bourses, which surged 130 percent last year after a four-year slump. Fifteen million people have invested in funds. The proportion of individual investors in closed-end funds rose to 74.21 percent by the end of 2006, an increase of 18.05 percentage points from the end of the first half, according to WIND. China raised 390 billion yuan in 90 new funds and registered 7.78 million new accounts in 2006. More than 300 mutual funds have sprung up in China since 1992. The funds are valued at around one trillion yuan, accounting for 19 percent of the present stock markets.
