UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations.It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao also attended UN conferences last year.During Wen's three-day stay here, he is expected to attend and address a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a summit of the UN Security Council member states and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and the MDGs.He will also meet with world leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Sino-U.S. friendship groups, overseas Chinese and foreign media in New York.About 140 heads of state and government will attend the three-day MDGs high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, where they will make new commitments to achieving the MDGs before the 2015 deadline.The MDGs, forged at a UN summit in 2000, includes eight ambitious goals, such as reducing extreme poverty in the world by half, cutting infant and maternal mortality, achieving universal primary education and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases which kill millions each year.In a joint interview with the UN-based Chinese media last week, UN chief Ban voiced his confidence in China to meet those goals on time and urged other world leaders to keep their promises on the MDGs.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the opening ceremony of the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, to be held in Macao later this month.Wen will attend the function and inspect the Macao Special Administrative Region during a visit slated from Nov. 13 to 14, said a statement from his office Sunday.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urged Tuesday the European Union (EU) to objectively and fairly treat the RMB exchange rate issue as that would benefit the EU, China, and the world economy.Wen made the remarks while meeting the Euro Group troika, including Euro Group President and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn.The meeting took place on the sidelines of the two-day eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels as China is under external pressure to appreciate its currency.Wen said China would further reform its formation mechanism of the yuan exchange rate to increase the currency's flexibility.China's central bank has announced on June 19 a series of steps of reforms. The Chinese currency has so far strengthened by about 2 percent against the U.S. dollar.China would also continue to expand import from the EU and strive to balance the trade, said Wen, adding that China was committed to transforming its economic development pattern, restructuring the economy and increasing domestic demands.Wen called on both sides to develop healthy ties from a strategic perspective as the EU has become China's largest trading partner while China stands as the EU's important exporting market.As the world economy was gradually recovering with uncertainties still hovering high, China and the EU should work together to combat the international financial crisis, Wen added.The Euro Group leaders appreciated China's support for the euro and the euro zone, saying the EU and China were good partners and enjoy extensive common interests.They also said the EU rejected both trade protectionism and currency war, and agreed differences and problems should be solved by dialogues.In a speech to the Greek parliament on Monday, Premier Wen said China supported a stable euro and would not reduce its euro-bond holdings.The three Euro Group leaders also held talks with China's Finance Minister Xie Xuren and central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan here on Monday. In Zhejiang, the license of the Hangzhou Minfeng Insurance Agent Company Limited was canceled for luring policyholders by exaggerating prospective earnings.The CIRC reminded the public not to be misled by similar claims and encouraged them to report illegal activities to reduce their losses.

TIANJIN, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China could meet the full-year inflation target of 3 percent if macro-control policies were effective, a senior economic planner said Tuesday at the World Economic Forum's annual Summer Davos meeting."China has paid high attention to managing inflation expectations by stepping up macro-controls this year," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission."If managed well, the full-year target of consumer price index of around 3 percent is still attainable," he said.The CPI climbed to a 22-month-high of 3.5 percent in August because of rises in food and fuel prices and a low comparison base.Food prices are likely to remain within reasonable range after macro-control and there is still room for industrial products to fall due to heated competition, Zhang said.The chance is also small for import prices of commodities to experience a dramatic rise again in the rest of the year after earlier retreating, he said.
