NEW YORK — The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won't march through Manhattan this year as it traditionally has for decades, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.In a statement, Macy's said that while it won't be able to utilize its traditional parade route, the event will still be broadcast nationwide on Thanksgiving morning. The made-for-TV special will showcase all the balloons, floats and performances of the parade from Herald Square in Manhattan, and will still be capped off with an appearance by Santa Claus.While the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, de Blasio said large gatherings like parades still have to wait."It will not be the same parade we're used to," the mayor said. "It will be a different kind of event. New results on a possible COVID-19 vaccine from Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca suggest it is safe and about 70% effective.Some experts say that shows it is likely to win approval, but questions remain about how well it may help protect those over 55. That's a key concern for a vaccine that health officials hope to rely on around the world because of its low cost, availability and ease of use.Partial results from tests of the vaccine in the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa were published Tuesday by the medical journal Lancet.“Today, we have published the interim analysis of the Phase III trial and show that this new vaccine has a good safety record and efficacy against the coronavirus,” said Professor Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial. “We are hugely grateful to our trial volunteers for working with us over the past eight months to bring us to this milestone.”Researchers claim the vaccine protected against disease in 62% of those given two full doses and in 90% of those initially given the half dose. However, independent experts have said the second group was too small — 2,741 people — to judge the possible value of that approach and more testing is needed.The interim analysis for efficacy was based on 11,636 participants accruing 131 symptomatic infections from the Phase III trials.In addition to the Oxford led program, AstraZeneca is conducting a large study in the US and globally. Nearly two weeks after a 16-year-old Pennsylvania girl vanished with a 45-year-old man, the pair was found Saturday in Mexico and the man was arrested, authorities say.Amy Yu was "unharmed and in good health," Allentown police said in a statement.She and Kevin Esterly, the man police say she willingly ran away with, were escorted to Miami by US Homeland Security Investigations agents and the US Marshals Service.Amy has been safely returned to her family in Pennsylvania, according to a statement from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security investigators.Esterly's arrest comes two days after Mexico's Attorney General issued an Amber Alert?for Amy. The alert said Esterly was the suspect in her disappearance and that an investigation showed she was in Mexico with Esterly. Her well-being, the alert said, was at risk.CNN has reached out to Mexico's attorney general and the federal police for comment, but has not heard back.Esterly was expected to be extradited back to Pennsylvania. 1027

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are dropping a controversial piece of coronavirus guidance and telling all those who have been in close contact with infected people to get tested.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) essentially returned to its previous guidance about such tests."Due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, this guidance further reinforces the need to test asymptomatic persons, including close contacts of a person with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection," the CDC wrote in a "clarification" posted Friday. With the change, the CDC got rid of language posted last month that said people who didn’t feel sick didn’t need to get tested.That August change set off a rash of criticism from health experts who couldn’t fathom why the nation’s top public health agency would say such a thing amid a pandemic that has been difficult to control.The New York Times reports that last month's change was not actually written by CDC scientists and was posted to the agency’s website despite their serious objections. It reportedly came from the Department of Health and Human Services.The CDC website now says testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Bill Pascrell believes the Supreme Court rejecting a Texas lawsuit to overturn the results of the 2020 election in four battleground states Friday is not enough for the Republican members and members-elect of Congress. Pascrell, who serves the Garden State's 9th District (parts of Bergen and Passaic counties), wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Administration Chair Zoe Lofgren saying that she should refuse to seat 126 Republicans who effectively endorsed the suit. "I’m demanding that the 126 Republicans who have endorsed a malignant lawsuit to overturn the will of the people and undermine our democracy not be seated in Congress," Pascrell said in a statement Friday. 730
