SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It wasn't the opening day anyone envisioned, but by game time, foot traffic had picked up around Petco Park.It was vastly different compared to past years, according to Brant Crenshaw. He owns Social Tap San Diego, located next to the ballpark. Due to public health orders, the capacity at their restaurant was significantly reduced. However, they were able to fill the tables and chairs set up in their outdoor areas, and by the start of the game, they had a healthy waitlist.Crenshaw says despite the pandemic, Opening Day still brought more people out than usual."This is baseball. We're Americans. They go hand in hand," he said. It's definitely special and were playing the hand we're dealt."Meanwhile, there were many fans spotted decked out in game-day gear trying to catch a glimpse of the game from their balconies near the ballpark. Some fans waved Padres flags from the balcony to show support.Chip Messenger kept opening day tradition going by watching from his balcony. He has a great view of the field and has invited a small group of people to watch the game from the outdoor vantage point. He plans to share the spot with other people as the season goes on."I run a tight ship on opening day, this is my 8th or 9th opening day from my balcony," Messenger said. "So you invite people you can't have too many, but I want to start inviting people I don't know in a few days. There's going to be like some babies for the time, moms and dads, couples you know. I'll make it fun."Messenger says he usually leaves his balcony party to go to his seats at the ballpark, this year is different. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In three weeks San Diego County will elect its next district attorney,  and in a recent poll a large number of voters indicated that they're still undecided. The results of our scientific 10News Union-Tribune poll shows the battle between Summer Stephan and challenger Genevieve Jones-Wright is wide open. If the election were held today, Summer Stephan would get 35 percent of the vote. Genevieve Jones-Wright would get 22 percent and 43 percent of those polled said they are undecided. "Those polls are consistent with what our campaign research shows," Jones-Wright told 10News. "We knew we were up against a political machine and it really is no surprise to me that she's up on the polls."Progressive candidate Jones-Wright says Stephan got a head start, by being appointed to the district attorney job when Bonnie Dumanis left. Jones-Wright said she thinks the poll shows her campaign is gaining steam.Stephan was encouraged by the poll numbers. "This is very encouraging, what you're telling me, because it shows that what we're doing is working," she told 10News. "That San Diegans are enjoying that we're one of the safest urban regions in the country and that they really prefer experience over an experiment."The poll shows that Stephan's voter base is republican, white and over the age of 35. It shows that Wright's voter base is younger, more racially mixed and primarily democratic. On Monday, Summer Stephan pulled out of a community forum, one which both she and Genevieve Jones-Wright accepted to face off. 1581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Kids, parents, and youth sports leaders held a protest in front of the San Diego County Administration Building on Saturday to voice their concerns over the state’s regulations regarding games and competitions.Currently, under California coronavirus restrictions, youth sports can practice, as long as six feet of social distancing can be maintained, but they can't play games. People who gathered Saturday said the lack of games is taking a toll on the youth.“Thank you for honoring our safety but I think our mental health is important as well and for that to be good and top-notch, we need to be allowed to play our sports and escape from life,” said 7th grader Zoey Hagan, who stood with other girls in her soccer club.Bob Turner is both Executive Director of Presidio Soccer League and President of the Southern California Youth Soccer Association and said the athletes should be able to play games. He said they have created safety plans, including spacing out the times of games and shortening games to avoid crowds, only allowing one parent for each athlete, and also requiring masks of all referees, parents, and substitute players. Turner said they’ve sent countless letters and filled-out petitions to the state, but have not gotten a response. A spokesperson for San Diego County said the county has also been asked about plans for youth sports. They also asked the state and have not heard about what’s next.“This is small potatoes to them compared to a lot of the other things opening but it is our youth and what’s more important than our kids. We’re destroying these kids with what’s happening through the schools and now we’re taking this away. This is the only outlet some of these kids have,” said Turner.At Saturday’s protest, speakers took turns sharing their personal experiences. One parent questioned why other businesses can operate, but these athletes can’t play games.“It is infuriating to me that we’ll open up beaches, we’ll open up Home Depot, we’ll open up restaurants. These people can make their money. We can take care of the adults and make sure they’re doing well, but our kids are sequestered?” he said, addressing the crowd.After a handful of speakers comprised of parents and athletes took to the podium, a group of young athletes held a 'what about us' banner and marched around the admin building while chanting "let us play." 2394

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Mayor Kevin Faulconer says changes are coming to the city's police department, as demands for police reform are made in cities around the nation.Faulconer says San Diego Police will develop a new de-escalation policy based on community feedback and best practices to reduce the number of use-of-force incidents. Maresa Talbert, Co-chair of San Diegans for Justice, says training could give officers a variety of tools."It can be as easy as a voice command. It can be something as simple as creating some space to really kind of calm down the situation where you're not face-to-face or where you're not arm-to-arm or touching," Talbert said.San Diego's police, like many departments around the nation, have faced increased scrutiny for use-of-force policies amid demonstrations against police brutality. In response, SDPD has banned the use of the carotid restraint technique among officers. Jack Schaeffer, President of the San Diego Police Officers Association, says the department's use-of-force policy, which includes de-escalation tactics, is regularly updated.City leaders have also responded. The Office on Race & Equity was recently created to tackle racial equity issues and City Council President Georgette Gomez has requested leaders consider a proposed ballot measure to expand police oversight this month."We heard the comments from the community. We heard the calls for reform. And I'm not waiting. We want to make lasting changes now. Not a year from now," Faulconer said of the forthcoming policy.Calls for a decrease in police spending, however, were not met. The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually.With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis.
