BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's railways will carry 235 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Railways said Friday.A daily average of 5.88 million people will make trains trips from Jan. 8 to Feb. 16, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Economic hubs such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou and the inland provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui and Hunan will see the most activity during the period, as millions of rural migrant workers and students head home for family reunions, according to the statement.The ministry has arranged for extra trains in anticipation of the rush, the statement said, but added that "the conflict remains between passenger demand and railway capacity."Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many citizens find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays.The ministry has begun allowing customers to book their tickets online or by phone to ease the ordeal of buying tickets. However, website glitches and the huge demand have rendered the new ways ineffective to many ticket buyers.The Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23.

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's railway authorities said Wednesday that it would put 315 more trains into service on Wednesday to cope with Lunar New Year travel demand, compared with 159 on Tuesday.About 3.7 million passengers hit the rails on Tuesday, up from 2.29 million on Monday, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement on its website.The ministry expected a post-festival travel peak on Friday.The country's trains carried a total of 83.46 million passengers from Jan. 8 to 22, up 7.9 percent from a year earlier, the ministry said in a statement issued on Tuesday.The 40-day Spring Festival travel season kicked off on Jan. 8 this year, with hundreds of millions of people, mainly migrant workers and college students, heading home for the most important festival in China.A total of 3.16 billion passenger trips are expected during the year's travel rush, up 9.1 percent from a year earlier. Of those journeys, 235 million are likely to be made by train, up 6.1 percent year-on-year.The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on Jan. 23 this year. 

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Data from NASA's Galileo spacecraft have provided scientists evidence of what appears to be a body of liquid water, equal in volume to the North American Great Lakes, beneath the icy surface of Jupiter's moon, Europa, the U.S. space agency announced Wednesday.The data suggest there is significant exchange between Europa's icy shell and the ocean beneath. This information could bolster arguments that Europa's global subsurface ocean represents a potential habitat for life elsewhere in our solar system. The findings will be published Thursday in the scientific journal Nature.Europa, which is slightly smaller than Earth's moon, is believed to have a large ocean of salty water deep beneath its frozen crust. Galileo spacecraft, launched by the space shuttle Atlantis in 1989, studied Jupiter, which is the most massive planet in the solar system, and some of its many moons.Pictures of it sent back by Galileo point to a tortured surface of cracks and jumbled ice. Seeking to understand how such weird topography evolved in a place with such dim sunlight, scientists believe that the answer lies in similar processes on Earth.Their model suggests that Europa's ice shell is about 10 kilometers thick and within it are giant pockets of water, lying at depths as shallow as three kilometers. Warm water from these sub-surface lakes wells up in plumes, causing the ice to become brittle, crack and then collapse. The ice turnover would be a plus for the prospects for life, as it would transfer energy and nutrients between the sub-glacial lake and the surface."One opinion in the scientific community has been if the ice shell is thick, that's bad for biology. That might mean the surface isn't communicating with the underlying ocean," said Britney Schmidt, lead author of the paper and postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Geophysics, University of Texas at Austin. " Now, we see evidence that it's a thick ice shell that can mix vigorously and new evidence for giant shallow lakes. That could make Europa and its ocean more habitable.""The data opens up some compelling possibilities," said Mary Voytek, director of NASA's Astrobiology Program. "However, scientists worldwide will want to take a close look at this analysis and review the data before we can fully appreciate the implication of these results."

HAIKOU, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will actively push forward maritime cooperation with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of the guidelines on conduct in the South China Sea, a Foreign Ministry official has said.Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin made the remarks during an international seminar on implementing the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and maintaining the navigational freedom and security of the waterway.Early next year, China will hold a senior officials' meeting and working group meeting with ASEAN countries on the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Liu said in an interview with Xinhua on the sideliens of the seminar held in Haikou, Hainan Province, from Dec. 14-15..The senior officials' meeting is a guiding mechanism for implementing the DOC at governmental level. TOKYO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Tuesday that Japan will seek to take a less inward- looking stance when it comes to diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region.Specifically he said that Japan will look to enhance diplomatic ties with China based on mutually beneficial goals."With China, this year marks the 40th anniversary of normalizing diplomatic ties. We will aim to deepen the mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests," Gemba said Tuesday in his first foreign policy speech in parliament.He went on to say that Japan plans to proactively make " concrete efforts" to strengthen its ties with China and establish more "open and multilayered networks" in the best interests of both countries.
