We're all looking forward to the return of live in-person music events. However, some artists and people behind-the-scenes don't want the industry to return to how things were before the pandemic. They want to put a new focus on making the stage more inclusive."We're now in the year 2020. I think people have had enough," said Jerome Crooks with Never Famous. Noelle Scaggs with Diversify the Stage agrees. "I've hit my wits end with being the only one. Being the only one on a stage that looks like me, reflects my skin tone."The message that things have to change is growing louder since the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "The music business can't have an effect on society until we've held ourselves accountable," said Binta Niambi Brown with the Black Music Action Coalition. "For those of us who have long desired to advance issues of equity and justice, it (Floyd's death) created this undeniable moment and we felt like we needed to seize it."Brown is a music executive who recently co-founded the Black Music Action Coalition. She says when we look at music labels and publishers, there are few people of color in senior positions. "The reality is that when we improve anything for a Black person or for Black artists, Black executives, we're improving the model for everyone," said Brown.Noelle Scaggs, with the group Fitz and the Tantrums, is focused on having better pipelines to get young minorities into the live music and touring industry through her organization Diversify the Stage. "I think it's just really about widening the net of opportunity and recruitment and really kind of being considerate of your surroundings and I think we, as artists, we do have a responsibility to participate in this work," Scaggs said.Scaggs teamed up with the tour manager behind Never Famous, Jerome Crooks, to expand a resource where touring professionals can market themselves."The promoters and the vendors they have to listen, you know, and they have to want to be better," said Crooks.Live Nation Urban created a Black Tour Directory which lists hundreds of qualified Black professionals in the music industry. The effort is getting noticed, they landed on the cover of a magazine this month."As a Black man in this industry, I just want to move forward. I want to look forward and I want to bring people under my wing and bring them up," Crooks said. Scaggs added, "I would love for an organization like Diversify the Stage to not have to exist anymore. That is really the ultimate goal."It's a start to living up to the promises of inclusivity, an issue they say we can't ignore anymore. 2617

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a bit of rejiggering, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump played host Sunday to hundreds of super-heroes, unicorns, skeletons and even a miniature version of themselves as part of a Halloween celebration at the White House. In years past, the president and first lady personally handed candy to the costume-clad kids, but this year, the treats were provided as participants walked along a path on the South Lawn. The kids still got to briefly meet the president and first lady though, who waved and offered words of encouragement from a safe distance about how much they liked the costumes.Trump was particularly pleased with a young boy with a distinctly Trump head of hair and a partner who did her best Mrs. Trump impersonation. The president motioned for them to turn and pose for the cameras, and they happily agreed.Another tot, a true princess it appeared, was so smitten with the cameras that she kept waving at them as she walked along, never noticing the VIPs behind her. 1026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a Thursday morning phone interview, President Donald Trump attacked Sen. Kamala Harris, repeatedly calling her a "monster." He also called her a "communist," which she is not.Trump went after the Democratic vice-presidential nominee after telling Fox Business that he wouldn’t participate in next week’s presidential debate if it’s virtual, Trump said he thought Harris performed terribly in Wednesday night’s debate with Vice President Mike Pence.“She was terrible, she was, uh, I don’t think you could get worse, and totally unlikeable, and she is,” Trump claimed. “She’s a communist. She’s left of Bernie. She’s rated left of Bernie by everyone. She’s a communist.”During the long and rambling interview, Trump said multiple times that if Biden wins the election, he won’t last longer than two months.“We’re going to have a communist and she’s going to be, in my opinion, within a month, look, I stood next to Joe and I looked at Joe. Joe’s not lasting two months as president, OK that’s my opinion. He’s not going to be lasting two months,” Trump said.Though Trump has been caught lying thousands of times throughout his presidency, he called Harris a liar during the interview. He claimed she wasn’t telling the truth when she said a Biden administration wouldn’t ban fracking in the U.S.“And this monster that was on stage with Mike Pence, who destroyed her last night by the way, but this monster, she says no, no, there won’t be fracking, there won’t be this,” Trump said. “Everything she says is a lie.”Trump refers to Kamala Harris as "this monster" pic.twitter.com/hcnUpV8PBf— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 8, 2020 Biden has said repeatedly that he doesn’t support an outright ban on fracking, but would rather bar the issuance of new permits for any form of drilling for oil and natural gas on federal land.“Fracking has to continue because we need a transition,” Biden told CNN during a town hall last month. “We’re going to get to net zero emissions by 2050 and we’ll get to net zero power emission by 2035. But there’s no rational to eliminate, right now, fracking.”.@andersoncooper challenges Joe Biden on fracking, saying "it sounds like, to some, you are trying to have it both ways.""Fracking has to continue because we need a transition," Biden responded to Cooper. "...There's no rationale to eliminate [it] right now." #BidenTownHall pic.twitter.com/mGejEumHo6— CNN (@CNN) September 18, 2020 Trump, who is still battling the coronavirus after testing positive last week, said he hasn’t been tested recently, he’s “essentially very clean.” He also claimed to be the “perfect physical specimen.” 2650

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joe Biden painted a very different picture of the COVID-19 pandemic than President Donald Trump during his first briefing as the nation's president-elect on Monday. "We are still facing a very dark winter," Biden said after a briefing with his advisers in Delaware. Biden announced a new COVID-19 advisory board. The group will be co-chaired by Dr. David Kessler, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner; Dr. Vivek Murthy, a former surgeon general of the United States; and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, a public health professor at Yale University. "Please wear a mask," Biden implored those watching. WHAT WOULD CHANGE UNDER BIDEN When President-elect Biden takes office, more than just "presidential tone" will change. "They are going to allow the evidence to be back in the driver seat," said Dr. Jon Andrus, an adjunct professor of global health at The George Washington University. Some of the potential changes include: a national mask mandate, more guidance to governors and mayors, increased reliance on international health groups, and more testing and contact tracing. "Lessons learned from many countries, such as those in southeast Asia, show aggressive testing and contracting tracing works," Andrus said. Biden's statement to the media came on the same day Pfizer released promising news about a potential vaccine, saying it 90% effective in some of their trials. 1413

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Amid reports that the FDA is considering tougher standards for the authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine, President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that the White House could override that decision. The Washington Post and CNN report that the FDA is expected to roll out the new standard for emergency authorization of a vaccine soon, which would make it exceedingly difficult for a vaccine to be cleared by Election Day.The FDA is expected to issue the guidance to increase transparency and public trust in the potential vaccine, The Post reports. The news comes as recent polls show Americans are increasingly skeptical about the vaccine process. As the president campaigns for reelection, he has repeatedly said he expects to have a coronavirus vaccine available to the public around Nov. 3 and that he would like to see one offered around that time.During a briefing on Wednesday, Trump warned that his administration might reject the FDA’s tougher standards.“We're looking at that and that has to be approved by the White House,” Trump told reporters. “We may or may not approve it. That sounds like a political move.”An FDA official confirmed to CNN that these types of guideline changes do go through the White House’s Office Management and Budget for review. At least one member of the White House's coronavirus task force says he's willing to be vaccinated."If a vaccine, there's shown to be and proven to be and authorized by the FDA to be safe and effective, I certainly would take that vaccine and I would recommend to my family that they take that vaccine," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.Trump says he has faith in the research underway and says the sooner a vaccine is available, the better."When they come back and they say that we have something that works and absolutely works and they're coming back with these great numbers and statistics and tests and everything that they have to come back with, I don't see any reason why it should be delayed any further," said Trump. The director of the National Institutes of Health reports that two more COVID-19 vaccines will likely soon enter phase three trials.CNN contributed to this report. 2238
