Public versus private. Government versus private sector. Big bureaucracy versus big business. Delivering healthcare to Americans is once again a central question in this year's presidential election, and the plans proposed by two of the top Democrats in the 2020 field have very little in common. For Elizabeth Warren, she is proposing an entirely public plan with no role for private insurance. At the June presidential debate, Warren agreed that she would eliminate private insurance if she has her way. “Look at the business model of an insurance company,” Warren said. “It's to bring in as many dollars as they can in premiums and to pay out as few dollars as possible for your health care"But a change from private to public would be a dramatic change for most Americans. Nearly 66 percent of Americans used private insurance in 2017, according to U.S. Census figures. Also, a number of Americans are employed by insurance companies. According to the Insurance Information Institute, more than 500,000 Americans are employed in the insurance industry. These facts are not lost on Biden, who advocated at Thursday's debate to maintain the private insurance system."I think the Obamacare worked," Biden said at Thursday's debate. "I think the way we add to it, replace everything that has been cut, add a public option, guarantee that everyone will be able to have affordable insurance, number one."Warren claimed during Thursday's debate that a Medicare-for-All system would lower overall costs."And the answer is on Medicare for All, costs are going to go up for wealthier individuals and costs are going to go up for giant corporations," Warren said. "But for hard-working families across this country, costs are going to go down and that's how it should work under Medicare for All in our health care system."The Congressional Budget Office released a report in May on the total cost of moving to a government-run healthcare system. The report says that nearly half of healthcare expenses in the U.S. come from the private sector, with the rest being funded through federal, state and local governments. Overall, Americans spend .5 trillion in healthcare per year, the CBO says. But the CBO could not put an estimate on exactly how much the average person would spend with a Medicare-for-All system. The report says a number of factors such as whether state governments will pay into the system, and whether citizens can opt out of public insurance all options would affect costs. The CBO states that the federal government has lower administrative costs than private insurance. The cost to administer all of Medicare was 6 percent, compared to 12 percent for private insurers in 2017, the CBO says. The CBO added that administrative costs could decrease even further as a Medicare-for-All system would have fewer eligibility exclusions. Although both Biden and Warren still lack key details for their plans, Biden has stated his goal is to have 97 percent of Americans insured. Warren claims that nearly 100 percent is possible with her plan. As of 2017, 91 percent of Americans were insured. The number of uninsured in 2010, at the time of Obamacare's passage, was nearly double, according to the Census. Even without changes to law, healthcare costs will likely rise in the U.S. Government estimates peg healthcare spending per year at trillion by 2027. The rate that healthcare expenses will rise will outpace overall GDP by .8 percent per year, according to government figures. 3509

SALEM, Ma. – To say legends never die in Salem would be an understatement. The crisp leaves and the sound of the harbor embraces you in its Americana state that you can’t help but fall in love with. And embracing that legacy, is what truly makes this town alive.“In October, it’s what we call the fifth season,” said Jill Christiansen, the assistant education director of the Salem Witch Museum.Every October, people are in Salem celebrating Halloween – every day of the month. But what is it about this place that draws us in? Why are we obsessed with the history, the secrets and the mystery?“Salem is most known today for the witch trials of 1692,” Christiansen said. “The twenty people who were executed in 1692 were innocent people. They were accused of witchcraft for any number of reasons, but they were innocent people.”People come from all over the country and the world to see the history of the witch trials. For Tina Fogel, Salem means so much more. “Is the history but it’s also my fifty ninth birthday today and it’s always been on my bucket list to come to Salem,” Fogel said while getting emotional. “We’ve had a rough couple of years. My daughter took her own life and I got the inheritance from her and that’s why I was able to come here. She would be so excited to know that I’m here.”History can be appreciated year-round, but Salem’s true colors are seen in the fall. The streets are filled with the wicked, the terrifying and just straight weird. People are wearing costumes, vendors are on the streets, hotels are almost always full, and restaurants packed. But it wasn’t always this way. Some say Salem is what it is today because of the very thing that legends say cursed it. “People kept asking me why I keep going back to Salem,” said a man who goes by the name Bubble Bob. “They say it’s a gutter. I say ‘yeah, but it’s my gutter.’ Fifteen to twenty years later, it’s a tourist entertainment spot. So, in a place where it was maybe not so healthy to get brought up is now a healthy environment. When I say it use to be a gutter, I mean a lot of people were dying from drugs and suicide. Twenty years later – nothing but improvement.”“In 1969, the show Bewitched came and filmed several episodes,” said Christiansen. “Because of that, it really put Salem back on the map again as connected to the witch trials. The tourism industry and many people attribute the town starting to grow right after that.” According to Destination Salem, from September to November about 500,000 people visit from all over the world. 9 million a year is generated through tourism alone, and thirty percent of that comes in the month of October.“We see approximatively 60,000 people in the month of October,” Christiansen said. “I believe the population of Salem at this point is 43,000. That gives you some perspective on just how many people come through here.”So why are we so drawn to this place? It’s the curiosity, the obsession, the wildly weird that allows this town to not be afraid to just be itself. And maybe, we envy that. So, to say Salem is embracing its legacy would be an understatement. 3122

Since it landed on Mars in 2012 NASA's Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater, a vast, dry ancient lake bed with a mountain at its center. Now, Curiosity has found sediments containing sulfate salt in the crater, which suggest it once held salty lakes.A range of salts have been found on Mars in different locations. Researchers interpret these as evidence of ancient brines. Salty water formations seemed to increase on the Martian surface as the planet transitioned to an arid climate 3.5 billion years ago.The new detection of sulfate salts came from sedimentary rocks dated to between 3.3 and 3.7 billion years ago. Curiosity has analyzed other, older rocks on Mars and didn't detect these salts in them.Researchers believe the salt is evidence of the crater's lake evaporating in the Red Planet's arid environment. They also believe studying younger rocks in the future could shed more light on how the Martian surface dried out.Gale Crater was created by an ancient impact, then filled in with sediment layers over time. Mount Sharp, the mountain at its center, was created by wind erosion of the hardened sediment layers. Those same layers act like chapters in the history of Mars and provide clues to its environment at each point in time.At the time the sulfate salts were present, lakes were probably scattered across the crater floor, fed by streams in the crater walls. Over time, the streams would overflow and then evaporate, trapped in a repetitive cycle taking place over millions of years. The findings were published Monday in the journal 1576
