"He is in our prayers and he knows that we're here for him."The state is currently working to contact trace 206 people who attended a Trump fundraiser at his private golf club in Bedminster last week. Trump and his staff were there just hours before the president announced that he'd tested positive for COVID-19.The New Jersey Attorney General is now investigating whether the fundraiser violated state rules on social distancing. Many in attendance did not wear masks. But the Republican National Committee has insisted that face masks were provided and the event was in compliance.At Murphy's afternoon press briefing, he said the president and his staff acted recklessly by coming to New Jersey, knowing they had come in contact with someone who tested positive.“The actions leading up to and during this event have put lives at risk,” Murphy said.Some of the event attendees flew in from other parts of the country and have now scattered."This never should have happened," said the governor. MARLBOROUGH, Mass. – On an old road in rural Massachusetts, comes a new technology that could change everything about drunk driving – by eliminating it. “Clearly it's a big problem and we need to do something about it,” said Dr. Bud Zaouk, president of KEA Technologies. The company is currently testing alcohol sensors in cars that would prevent a drunk driver from hitting the road. “It's a public-private partnership between the auto industry, all 17 automakers in the U.S. and the federal government,” Dr. Zaouk said. How does it work? There are two technologies: one that measures the level of alcohol in someone’s breath, similar to a breathalyzer. Another device detects alcohol through a touch of fingertips. The technology would allow you to start a vehicle, but if alcohol is detected, that vehicle would not move at all. Outside of the lab, the real-world testing involves using passengers with varying levels of intoxication. It’s more complicated than just getting someone drunk on vodka. “A lot of science actually goes behind that. So, we have something that we call a ‘drink master,’” said Dr. Kelly Ozdemir, director of applied sciences at KEA Technologies. “We can calculate milliliters how much alcohol to give for them.” Kristin Davis is with Mothers Against Drunk Driving. A few days before Christmas 2016, a drunk driver blew through a red light at 55 miles per hour, hitting Kristin’s car. She was 7 months pregnant at the time.“Every time I got in my car after the crash, I would replay it in my head,” she said. “I had to be cut out and I didn't know whether or not my baby had survived until they could get me to the hospital.” Her baby did survive, but she hopes the alcohol sensors can help others avoid the ordeal she went through. “I hope to see it one day as standard as seatbelts and airbags and backup cameras,” Davis said. That day might be coming sooner than you think. A bipartisan bill making its way through Congress, could make alcohol sensors standard in all new vehicles, possibly within the next four years. “This technology can't be optional,” said J.T. Griffin, chief government affairs officer for MADD. “It needs to be in everybody's car for it to be effective.” Back in Massachusetts, the testing to make the alcohol sensors road ready keeps going, in the effort to save the more than 10,000 people killed each year in drunk driving crashes. “We need to make sure that this doesn't happen on our roads and make sure that we're able to save these lives,” Dr. Zaouk said.The first vehicles to see these alcohol sensors installed will likely be government fleet vehicles used by local, state and federal agencies. For Tammi Fitzgerald, being a flight attendant was an adventure. So much so, she thought she’d never want to retire from American Airlines. "I don't think there's a flight attendant out there that doesn't have a love affair with what they are doing," Fitzgerald says.But things took a turn after a strange incident in 2010. While on one flight, Fitzgerald says she smelled an unusual odor that made her sick. "My eyes were watering,” she describes. “I had a headache that was like on the front of my head, and it was just a bass drum and my nose started dripping." Fitzgerald compared the smell to the odor of moldy socks. Since then, Fitzgerald says she experienced several of what the airline industry calls "fume events.” "It's like kind of sticking and exhaust pipe out your car into your cabin and not doing anything about it," says Dr. Susan Michaelis, an aviation health and safety consultant. Michaelis, a former pilot, has a PHD in safety science. Some of her research on fume events has been published by the World Health Organization. Some experts say fume events happen because part of the air passengers breathe is pulled through the jet's engine. If it mixes with oils and chemicals and then goes into the cabin, they say it can make people sick. According to research done at Kansas State University, there are on average five fume events a day in the U.S. Judith Anderson with the Association of Flight Attendants worries it's a larger problem. "Because airlines are not required to report what are called fume events when they happen on the ground, that estimate of five or so per day is an underestimate of what's actually happening," Anderson says. Boeing disputes this, saying “cabin air is safe to breathe" and "exposure to trace levels of organophosphate contamination" is not harmful. "The initial symptoms can be flu-like symptoms, stomach cramping so you might think, ‘I’m coming down with something,’” Anderson says. “Many people report symptoms consistent with exposure to carbon monoxide gas, like headache, dizziness, fainting, disorientation, those sorts of symptoms." American Airlines told us they train crews to report fume events. Southwest says they use the modern Boeing 737, which has systems to keep the cabin safe. JetBlue didn't have an answer to our questions. Several airlines didn't respond at all. As for Fitzgerald, she says she had to take leave from her job because of fume events, and she eventually retired. Medical records show she was suffering from inhalation irritation. Fitzgerald says she’s still dealing with health issues and wants others to be aware. 2622

  

Millions in Northern California saw apocalyptic orange skies this week as massive wildfires burn through the region.Phoenix native Kristen Marin and her family live 2.5 hours north of San Francisco in Mendocino County, while the Oak Fire is burning near them."It feels a little like doomsday," said Marin. "It felt like it was night all during the day time. The air quality was awful. The crickets were chirping. The floodlights were on, thinking it was dark. Everything is covered in ash. It smells like smoke. You'd think that you were in a fireplace," said Marin.On Thursday, the Oak Fire was 25% contained.Luckily, Marin's family hasn't been told to evacuate."You're just on notice, all the time you're wondering if it's going to be your community or your address that pops up on the alert," said Marin.According to the California Department of Fires and Forestry Protection, there are about 14,000 firefighters on the line of 29 major wildfires burning across the state.Tait Mitton is leading a team of four from the Arizona Fire and Medical Authority. They're on a two-week mission northeast of Fresno working night shifts on the Creek Fire in the Sierra National Forest."Our responsibility is life safety. Making sure everyone is evacuated from the area, also protecting structures, houses, cabins," said Mitton.The Creek Fire has burned more than 175,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes and is 0% contained."Right now California---the firefighters over here --they're working really hard, they're overtaxed right now, we're going to do everything we can to help and help the community," said Mitton.Mitton said compared to desert fires, the vegetation in the Sierra National Forest makes it harder to contain the flames since there are more trees than burn hotter for longer. "It's weird being a 16 year old these days," Reid Sotkin said. You could say Sotkin is just your average kid. He's a junior at Jenks High School who likes to hang out with friends. Yeah, I was pretty surprised," he said. Sotkin puts his money where his mouth is. He plans on living comfortably. So, he's investing now."I do a couple hundred dollars every month," Sotkin said. "So, I just do that so that way I'll have a couple million dollars by the time I retire just sitting in the background."During our Zoom interview, I just couldn't resist getting some advice about my own investment advisor, 2 Works For You's Chief Meteorologist Mike Collier."He's kind of been giving me some stock tips and they've been kind of terrible," I said as Sotkin laughed. "So, give Mike some advice on how he should invest in the stock market.""Basically, unless you're very smart and spending a lot of time, you're not going to beat the market," Sotkin said.Sotkin said he likes the S&P500. It represents 500 very reliable companies."That's gone up an average of 9.8% since its inception," Sotkin said. "That's the way to go. Just put it in index funds and let it accumulate over 30, 40, 50 years."The future is looking bright for this young entrepreneur and it could be for you, too. Sotkin said it's all about starting early, being consistent, and taking advantage of compound interest."Do you mind if I ask about your net worth right now," I asked."Yeah, but ah...
