BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Thursday stressed the importance of nurturing cadres from ethnic minority groups to help in the government's drive to develop regions inhabited by ethnic minorities.Efforts should be made to cultivate outstanding cadres with political integrity and professional competence from ethnic minorities, Xi said at a symposium marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of a training course for Tibetan cadres at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).The Party School of the CPC Central Committee initiated a training course for Tibetan cadres in Sept. 1980. Over the past three decades, more than 1,700 Tibetans have attended 42 sessions of the training course, becoming the backbone in promoting development, stability and ethnic unity in Tibet.Xi said Party schools should play a key role in training and nurturing cadres from ethnic minorities, who possess both political integrity and ability, particularly among young people and those who are from grass-roots levels.

BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- China as well as Latin American and Caribbean countries celebrated here on Tuesday the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of diplomatic relations at a reception.Addressing the reception, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the past fifty years have witnessed significant progress in the ties between China as well as Latin American and Caribbean countries, citing deepening political mutual trust, win-win cooperation on all fronts and strengthened friendship between their people. The People's Republic of China forged diplomatic ties with Cuba in Sept. 1960 at the ambassadorial level, heralding its relations with Latin American and Caribbean countries.Yang said that the Chinese government values its ties with Latin American and Caribbean countries, cherishes the friendship of their people and is always devoted to boosting their friendly cooperation of mutual benefits.China as well as Latin American and Caribbean countries, both as the developing countries, have common interests in achieving sustainable development, promoting world multi-polarization and jointly dealing with global challenges, Yang said.Yang called on the two sides to work together to advance the comprehensive and cooperative partnership featuring equality, mutual benefit and common development.Dean of the Diplomatic Corps of Latin American and Caribbean Countries in China, Guillermo Velez hailed the friendly cooperation between the nations in their region and China over the last fifty years.Guillermo Velez, also Colombian ambassador to China, said that Latin American and Caribbean countries attach importance to relations with China and firmly believe in the development of bilateral ties featuring friendly political relations and robust pragmatic cooperation.Almost 200 guests, including Chinese government officials, diplomats from the Latin American and Caribbean countries in China and personalities of various circles of the two sides, attended the reception.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that China's rapid economic development is in the interest of U.S. economy."It's good for us that China has done well," Obama said at a town-hall-style meeting telecast live on CNBC before heading to Pennsylvania to raise money for a Democratic Senate candidate. His address is in line with U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner's testimony to the Congress last Thursday."We have very significant economic interests in our relationship with China," Geithner said, "a strong and growing China benefits the United States, just as a strong and growing United States is good for China."In responding to a question about China's currency issue, Obama said that China's currency is lower than the market says that it should be, but trade is in the benefit for both sides."I just want to make sure trade is good for American businesses and American workers," Obama said."We are going to continue to insist that on this issue, and on all trade issues between us and China, that it is a two-way street, " he said.Facing November elections shaped by voter anger at the sour economy, U.S. lawmakers are weighing bills that would slap sanctions on Chinese goods, amid accusations that China keeps its currency -- and thereby its exports -- artificially cheap. The Obama administration acknowledged that China's imports supported the global economy and contributed substantially to recovery around the world. With over 1.3 billion people and an economy continuing to grow at or near double-digit rates, China is the U.S.' fastest-growing major overseas market.China's record of bringing hundreds of millions out of poverty, building a rapidly growing middle class, and now its efforts to encourage growth led by domestic demand, ultimately mean more demand for American goods and services. In order to pull the economy out of recession, Obama launched National Export Initiative (NEI) in March and set the goal of doubling the U.S. export in five years and creating two million jobs in the country. The Obama administration is clear that the vast Chinese market is a crucial part to fulfill the goal."Increasing opportunities for U.S. firms and workers through expanded trade and investment with China will be an important part of the success of the President's National Export Initiative and our efforts to support job growth more broadly."According to the Treasury Department, China is a critical market for a broad range of American products, from agriculture, to manufacturing, to services.China was the largest market for U.S. soybeans last year, importing over 9 billion dollars. In the manufacturing sector, the United States has already exported nearly 3.5 billion dollars in aircraft to China this year alone, and U.S. exports of automobiles and parts to China have grown over 200 percent. The issues in China and U.S. economic relations and trade should be properly solved through consultations on an equal footing. Exerting pressure cannot solve the issue. Rather, it may lead to the contrary, China's Foreign Ministry said recently.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China will launch a new national campaign to crack down on violations of intellectual property rights (IPRs) and on the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products. The decision was made at a regular meeting of the State Council Tuesday, which was presided over by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The campaign will last for half a year, beginning from the end of October. The campaign will target pirated publications, software products, DVDs, designs and other products with IPRs, as well as violations of registered trademarks and patents, both at the production and distribution levels. The campaign will also enhance China's scrutiny over the import and export of fake goods and mete out stern punishment to businesses involved in the import and export of such goods. The campaign will target Internet piracy and the sale of pirated and fake goods via the Internet.Additionally, the State Council directed all government agencies to purchase only authorized software and their upgraded versions. At the Tuesday meeting, a draft regulation on gas use in urban areas was also passed in a bid to secure gas supplies and eliminate safety risks.
