TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to consolidate cooperation with all the other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on safeguarding regional security and promoting collective prosperity, Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu said here Friday.Meng, also a Chinese State Councilor, made the remarks at the fifth session of the SCO Security Council Secretaries, which drew interior and public security ministers of SCO member states to prepare for a June summit of the organization in Tashkent.The SCO, a regional security organization founded in 2001, consists of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.Meng said that against the backdrop of complicated global and regional situations, it is important for SCO countries to deepen practical cooperation and safeguard regional stability by further coordinating cooperative mechanisms within the SCO framework.It was also important to seek collaboration and utilize various resources, he said.Meng noted the lingering effects triggered by the global financial crisis on economy and society, as well as the continuing threats from terrorism, extremism and separatism on regional security. BEIJING, April. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced here Thursday.The figure was 0.7 percentage points lower than the previous month, and for the first quarter, it was up 2.2 percent.The producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 5.9 percent in March from a year earlier.China's PPI went up 5.2 percent year on year in the first quarter, said NBS.

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's drought relief authorities said Tuesday heavy rains had eased the drought in southwest China's Sichuan Province, but dry weather and high temperatures continued in other affected regions.Compared with data collected last Sunday, people and livestock facing shortage of drinking water in Sichuan had decreased by 500,000 and 560,000 respectively by Tuesday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH).Heavy rains also reduced the area of affected arable land in Sichuan by 2.33 million mu (155,333 hectares) by Tuesday, according to the SFDH.However, drought still persisted in other areas, including the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as rain in these regions was far from adequate.As of Tuesday, drought had left 24.62 million people and 18.08 million livestock short of drinking water, said the statement.

JINAN, May 3 (Xinhua) -- A pipeline owned by China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) resumed operation Monday afternoon after it leaked 240 tonnes of oil in east China's Shandong Province.The company immediately shut down the cracked pipeline and blocked the leakage site after the leakage was spotted, said a spokesman with Sinopec.It recovered 220 tonnes of oil, which had leaked to nearby farmland and roads, the spokesman said.The leakage, which was discovered at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, occurred at a section of the Dongying-Huangdao pipeline near Jiulong Township in Jiaozhou City."The influence of the leakage on the farmland could be controlled within the minimum level," he said.Testing results from the local environmental protection authorities showed the leakage didn't contaminate the nearby water sources.An initial investigation showed the pipeline crack was caused by a digger driver who unauthorizedly excavated the earth above the pipeline to bury the waste at a construction site in Jiulong Township.Police are searching for the driver, who fled after the accident.
