The national economy rose 6.2 percent in the first quarter last year, 7.9 percent in the second quarter, 9.1 percent in the third and 10.7 percent in the fourth.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's Education Ministry has asked school authorities to help students ward off influence of pornography on Internet or mobile WAP sites through educational campaigns.The ministry also encouraged students in primary and secondary schools to report Internet links and mobile WAP sites that contain "negative information", especially obscene content.Local education departments and schools should carry out educational activities tailored to different age groups, guide them to "properly handle cyber world", and enhance their understanding of the negative effect of porn websites, online violence and lewd information, the ministry said in a notice on its website.The move was the ministry's latest effort to echo the government's endeavor to crack down on pornography on Internet websites and mobile WAP sites.The ministries of public security and industry and information technology initiated a campaign in August last year to eradicate lewd contents from the Internet.Students should be taught not to make or spread lewd content online; not to enter profitable Internet cafes; not to access websites with "lewd" content; not to play lewd cyber games, the notice said.They were also advised not to use offensive and obscene languages and be careful in making friends on Internet."Lewd" content includes violence, libel, private and other information that violates standards of public decency.Public distribution of pornography is illegal in China, and the government last year began to stamp out WAP porn links to shield young people from online porn.The Ministry of Education also required schools to make regular examinations on school websites and install filter software to students' computers.Teachers should enhance communication with students and give counseling to those who incline to be obsessed in the cyber world, the notice stressed.The notice also advocates school authorities and parents to join hands in helping children establish good Internet ethics."Parents should not leave students alone to use Internet and spend more time to communicate with them." read the notice.China has more than 338 million Internet users, and more than 60 percent are younger than 30, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said Friday the U.S. decision to impose preliminary duties on Chinese potassium phosphate salts and coated paper was unfair and discriminatory.Yao said "frequent" countervailing probes by the U.S. into Chinese products have "unfairly restricted normal exports," adding the fresh anti-dumping measures came only two years after the U.S. ruled China's coated paper exports did not harm the domestic industry in November 2007.The two products will face 109 percent and up to 13 percent duties, respectively, according to a U.S. Commerce Department statement Tuesday.Yao said the fundamental reason behind the difficulties in the U.S. coated paper industry was due to weak demand caused by the financial crisis. He said passing the problem on to Chinese manufacturers was unacceptable.He said China firmly opposes abuse of trade protectionist measures by the U.S. and would negotiate with the U.S. over the unfair move to protect the interests of Chinese companies.

CAIRO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The commander-in-chief of Egyptian armed forces met Wednesday in Cairo with visiting Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian, pledging to strengthen bilateral military ties.Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, who is also Egyptian Minister of Defense, said during the meeting that the two countries have seen close cooperation in military, political and economic fields in recent years, which serves both countries' interests as well as regional and world peace and stability."The Egyptian military attaches great importance to the friendly relationship with the Chinese counterpart and expects more efforts to be made to further improve pragmatic cooperation," Tantawi said.For his part, Ma said the two sides enjoy long-term friendly relationship, and fruitful cooperation has been accomplished in the fields of high-level visits and professional personnel training."The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the Egyptian side to consolidate the traditional friendship and push forward the in-depth cooperation between the two militaries," Ma said.Ma arrived in Cairo on Tuesday. During his visit, he also presided over the first session of the Chinese-Egyptian Defense Cooperation Commission.
