SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While Michelin decided to postpone its annual award of stars to California restaurants this year due to the pandemic and wildfires, undercover eaters did find several "discoveries" across the state.The new-found culinary delights were announced as part of Michelin Guide's "Family Meal" livestream to celebrate the resilience of restaurants and raise money for the California Association of Food Banks.In San Diego, five restaurants pleasantly surprised guide inspectors were Tuetano Taqueria in San Ysidro, Morning Glory in Little Italy, Dija Mara in Oceanside, Soichi Sushi in University Heights, and Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town.Inspectors said Tuetano Taqueria Chef Priscilla Curiel’s guisados "are every inch the equal of Baja’s—down to the fair prices and hefty portions (and without the long traffic lines on your way home)." The guide also hailed the restaurant's beef birria that is topped with a bone filled with buttery marrow on top of the taco.Morning Glory's soufflé pancakes are "worth waking up for," according to the guide, and dishes like fried rice with pork belly and eggs and potatoes au gratin are "a great riff on tradition."Indonesian stop Dija Mara serves up creative cocktails and delicious nasi goreng (fried rice with shrimp, pork belly, chicken, and the yolk of a sunny egg) and charred eggplant with smoked tomato sambal and crispy fried shallots, inspectors said.Soichi impressed with its sushi offerings, including its pike mackerel, kampachi, and sea bass dishes. Michelin says Soichi's shirumono fish soup is also a must before trying out the restaurant's green tea ice cream.Inspectors say Sushi Tadokoro's omakase is a must-try, especially the sushi joint's oysters and scallops. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries after their small engine plane crashed near Montgomery Field Airport on Thursday afternoon.The incident was reported around 4:30 p.m. near the executive airport at Kearny Villa Road and Balboa Avenue.According to the San Diego Police Department, a witness said the plane crashed behind a building near the airport and was helping the pilot.The plane had just taken off from the airport when it clipped trees and crash landed in an open space behind the Kyocera business building on Balboa Avenue, said Dan Eddy, Battalion Chief of the San Diego Fire Department Two male passengers were responsive when crews arrived but were transported with major injuries.Police said there was no active fire and no structures or vehicles were damaged.Eddy estimated at least 20 gallons of fuel spilled from the wrecked plane.The plane missed a high voltage area by about 30 feet, said Eddy.No further information was provided at this time. 1004

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego officials Wednesday named former men’s head basketball coach Lamont Smith as the college employee involved in the campus admissions bribery scandal known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” The initial indictment, released earlier in March, alleged real estate developer Robert Flaxman paid about 0,000 to get his son in the “side door” with the help of a USD coach. Federal documents claim an FBI witness and Smith worked to accept Flaxman’s son, an Industrial Systems Engineer Major, as an athletic recruit, although he did not play basketball. He was hired to coach the men's basketball team in 2015.In 2018, San Francisco Police arrested Smith on suspicion of domestic violence at the team's hotel. The woman told police that she and Smith, who is married with two children, were involved. USD put Smith on administrative leave following his arrest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Video of a mystery car prowler is helping bring neighbors in Allied Gardens together.Along Estrella Avenue early Friday morning, Thomas Arevalo found his 2010 Honda Accord missing from the street in front of his home. Inside the trunk were hundreds of dollars worth of equipment belonging to the Rock Church baseball ministry.When one neighbor learned of the theft, he searched through his surveillance video and saw something suspicious. Just before 5 a.m., just feet away from where that car was parked, was a man wearing a hat and holding a skateboard, going from vehicle to vehicle to vehicle.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhood"Just brazen with not a care in the world.
