OCEANSIDE, CA (KGTV) -- There is one thing that is obvious about Oceanside, the city goes hand in hand with surfing. As it happens to be one of California's original surf towns."Oceanside still has that vibe to it. I mean this town revolves around surfing," says U.S.A. Surfing CEO Greg Cruse.U.S Olympic surfing coach Brett Simpson says he loves the surfing tradition and atmosphere you find in Oceanside."The culture is very rich. There has been a lot of years where there has been tons of shapers, the magazines, and clothing companies."So it just makes sense the U.S. Olympic Surfing team has chosen Oceanside as a training site for the Olympic games in Japan."Oceanside is a very ideal place because it mimics a lot of what we are trying to do. There are beach breaks, and it has some jetties, as well as a pier. It's very good practice for where ever we go around the globe."And the beaches also resemble the type of waves team U.S.A.will be competing on when they get to Japan next year."For us to be able to utilize something that's similar to the Olympic site, without having to travel to Japan, is going to be very helpful to our team," says Cruse.And this Sunday, Oceanside is calling on all surfers to hit the waves in support of California Surfing Day. It is the state's designated holiday to honor the history and the culture of the sport. "Obviously, every day is surfing day for me and other surfers," says Simpson. "But September 20th is a big one. Those items include clothing, cellophane wrapping, or holiday lights. Any packing materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts should go in the trash.Also, don't forget about the Christmas tree. You can check with your city or even local farms to see if they'll recycle trees to make wood chips for parks, or maybe for animals. You’ll just want to be sure to remove any tinsel, ornament hooks or wire from the tree before handing it over.Lastly, experts say never burn wrapping paper. It can be a fire hazard.The only other potential hazard is in your fridge. Those holiday leftovers will start to go bad Monday. However, you can freeze some leftovers. On Veterans Day, the National Museum of the American Indian, part of the Smithsonian museums in D.C., unveiled the new National Native American Veterans Memorial.This new memorial stands on the grounds of the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall.It features a stainless steel circle balanced on a carved stone drum. There are benches for gathering and remembering, and four lances where veterans, family members, tribal leaders, and others can tie cloths for prayer and remembrance.It does not include veterans’ names or tribal identification; many veterans asked during the design consultation process said they did not wish to have them added, as the memorial is timeless and is dedicated to all Native veterans, past, present and future. 771

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A big problem the homeless population faces is finding a safe place to bathe, that's why businesses are teaming up to help. Jordan Verdin has spent the last decade working with the homeless population in the North County. As a photographer, he’s always taking pictures and sharing their stories on social media. Part of Verdin’s love of taking pictures of the homeless is allowing them the opportunity of, “being seen and being heard but sometimes they might not want to be seen because of how they look so what we want to do I provide something that will eliminate that barrier”. He tells 10News, “One of the consistent needs shared with me is needing a place to shower”. After hearing that need repeated time and time again, he’s decided to work another project. Verdin mentioned the project to Oceanside business owner Jeanette Linnborn. Linnborn is the owner of coffee shop, Stay Golden. When Verdin brought the idea to Linnborn she jumped on board immediately. She tells 10News, “I was so excited about that I was like okay we can totally do this”. The shower trailer is made up of two sides, each equipped with a bathroom and shower. Verdin tells me 125 people will be able to shower daily. The shower trailer will stand as a liaison to help homeless back on their feet, “something as simple as a shower and a haircut just makes them feel human again” Verdin tells 10News. The cost of the shower trailer is ,000 and they have just reached the halfway point. There’s still a GoFundMe page set up to help them get the other half of funding. 1575
