SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of officers in San Diego County have been convicted of crimes and some are still on the job. That's according to a new investigation by several newsrooms across the state, including the Voice of San Diego.A few examples of convicted cops include the case of former SDPD Sergeant Oscar Armenta who pleaded guilty to attacking his girlfriend but didn’t get any jail time. Former SDPD Officer Anthony Arevalos was convicted of groping women and trying to elicit sexual favors during traffic stops. Married ex-SDPD Officers Bryce and Jennifer Charpentier admitted to stealing and taking prescription drugs while on the clock. Other officers like Karen Almos and Jeffrey Blackford got DUIs and are reportedly still working for SDPD, according to a massive new database of convicted law enforcement officers.Complete Coverage: The Transparency ProjectThe database is a collaborative project from several news organizations including the Voice of San Diego, which was coordinated by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley and the Bay Area News Group. The project was born after an open-records request last year shed light on a list that came from the California Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training which revealed close to 12,000 state officers and applicants who’ve been found guilty of various offenses. According to the database, of the more than two dozen convicted San Diego County officers, the majority, 17, were from San Diego Police Department. There were six officers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, two from Chula Vista Police Department, one from Oceanside Police Department, one from Carlsbad Police Department and one from San Diego City Schools Police.Monday, an SDPD spokesperson confirmed with 10News that he told the Voice of San Diego, in part, "Cops make mistakes like everyone else and local jurisdictions should be able to determine for themselves whether that person is worthy of continuing to carry a badge." 2003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Emergency crews rescued a driver that was trapped in an SUV that rolled over on a Clairemont street early Tuesday morning.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego firefighters and police were called to the 4000 block of Genesee Avenue in response to a crash involving a red SUV.A witness told ABC 10News the vehicle was speeding down the street when it struck a median and then rolled over several times, also hitting some parked vehicles.The witness said two passengers were able to get out of the wreckage, but the driver was pinned in the SUV.Responding crews took about 30 minutes to get the driver out with the Jaws of Life. The driver and one passenger were taken to the hospital, but the other passenger left the scene and is being sought by police. 774

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Due to struggling ridership, the City of San Diego has been busy creating a plan to revamp its bikesharing program.On Wednesday staff will provide an update on improvements made and future plans, in response to a grand jury report in 2016.The program, DecoBike, is privately owned but works in partnership with the city.Critics of the program say it has not met the city's needs due to where stations were built.Last year a county grand jury report titled "San Diego's Bikesharing Program Needs Help," outlined ways the city and DecoBike could improve to better serve the community.One recommendation was to put more stations in beach communities, even though local business owners and residents protested them being there.Since then, the city has done the opposite, removing 14 stations from beach communities.City spokesperson Katie Keach says the city and DecoBike are concentrating on increasing the number of stations in the urban core.By doing this, they believe it will provide for a comprehensive system to increase alternative transportation options. They say it will also help the city meet its Climate Action Plan goals.Keach says they hope to have additional stations in North Park, Uptown, Golden Hill and downtown this winter.The city is conducting presentations to community planning groups this fall, seeking public input.Bicycle and climate activists want the program to succeed, saying it's critical to the city's Climate Action Plan.  1486
