SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and City Attorney Mara Elliott on Monday announced a new partnership that will help protect local families from gun violence.The local leaders said a program will be implemented to provide specialized gun safety training for 800 county social workers that deal with children and investigate child abuse.The training will be held virtually for these employees in the coming months. They want each of them to be familiar with gun violence restraining orders and San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms law -- two tools gun prevention advocates say are essential in keeping people safe.Carol Landale, with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, said, “The more people who are aware of how to use a gun violence restraining order, as far as we’re concerned, the better. And this is not to say we’re coming after your guns. This is not what it’s about … We remove the gun on a temporary basis -- a temporary removal for a crisis and when the crisis is done the gun can be returned.”Officials say they’re doing this now because COVID-19 has limited the interaction between children and mandated reporters like their teachers or school counselors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are asking the public for help identifying the person they believe stabbed a man to death in Pacific Beach last week.Police say the suspect was engaged in a fight with a 55-year-old man outside the 7-Eleven store at 4340 Mission Boulevard, when he stabbed the victim several times. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene.Surveillance footage of the suspect was released this week. The suspect is described as a 20- to 30-year-old black male, about 5'8" to 5'10" tall, and was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, and a black hat at the time of the stabbing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials have warned at least three local churches about having services indoors. The county sent out three letters to Skyline Church in La Mesa; Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove; and Awaken Church's campus on Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa.The letters to Skyline and Lighthouse were very similar, saying indoor services create "significant risk of spreading COVID-19," encouraging the churches to move their in-person services outside. The third document is a cease-and-desist letter sent to Awaken Church ordering the church to stop indoor operations. All three letters are dated July 17 and are signed by County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The letters state that failure to comply with these orders can mean criminal misdemeanor citations with a fine of ,000 for each violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police believe the man whose mud-covered body was found in the Tijuana River may have floated across the border into the United States, investigators said Friday. The man’s body was found Thursday in the river behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets, police said. He was partially covered in debris, water, and mud. An autopsy revealed the man had suffered traumatic injuries, but investigators did not provide details on the nature of them. “It is possible the man’s body was carried by the Tijuana River across the border into the United States, where it was discovered,” police said. The man had distinctive tattoos, which investigators hope to use to make an identification. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego lawmakers responded Friday to President Donald Trump’s comments about border wall construction and funding as the government shutdown stretched into day 13. Trump declared he could keep parts of the government closed for "months or even years" as he and Democratic leaders failed in a second closed-door meeting to resolve his demand for billions of dollars for a border wall with Mexico. “We did a lot of wall in San Diego,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “They wanted it very badly.” Trump cited concerns about the U.S.-Mexico border, including entry by terrorists, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. San Diego County’s congressional representatives emailed comments to 10News regarding the president’s statements. “San Diegans view our proximity to Mexico as an opportunity, not a threat, and we recently celebrated building a bridge between our two countries – not a wall – a bridge with adequate customs staffing so people can travel back and forth easily, and legally,” wrote Rep.
