BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of passengers traveling on China's railway set a new daily record on Oct.1 driven by holiday makers and improved rail transport capacity, railway authorities said Saturday.Daily railway passenger traffic on Friday hit 8.3 million riders, up 19.8 percent year on year and overtaking the daily record of 7.1 million set on May 1 during the Labor Day holiday, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Friday's figure also outnumbered the previous day by 1.8 million, the MOR said.Over the past four days more than 24 million people in China chose to travel by train, which is 10.3 percent higher than the figure during the same period last year, said the ministry.Thanks to China's increased transport capacity, stemming partially from high-speed railway construction, railway authorities managed to meet the travel demands of holiday makers, which are dominated by travelers and those who were returning home.China's weeklong National Day holiday begins on Friday.China has 7,055 kilometers of high-speed railway in service, which is the world's longest, said He Huawu, chief engineer of the MOR.By 2012, China will have a railway network of 110,000 kilometers, 13,000 kilometers of which will be high-speed rail, according to the MOR.

THE HAGUE, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Xue Hanqin was sworn in Monday as a judge of the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ), becoming the first Chinese woman to get the job.Another female judge, Joan E. Donoghue from the United States, assumed office together with Xue."It is the first time in the court's history that two female judges will serve simultaneously," the ICJ said in a statement.Almost all ICJ judges had been male with only one exception -- British Dame Rosalyn Higgins, who served on the court from 1995 to 2009.Xue, a veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, was elected to the ICJ with all 15 votes in the Security Council and a majority of votes in the UN General Assembly in June. She is the third Chinese judge in the Court."More and more women take active part in the major international justice organizations, which marks the improvement of civilization," Xue told Xinhua.Xue is no stranger to the Dutch city. BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Thursday ended its bimonthly session, adopting a series of bills including the long-awaited social insurance law that had been reviewed by lawmakers four times in almost three years.The law that aims to prevent the improper use of social security funds was first submitted to the legislature in December, 2007, following a scandal in Shanghai involving 3.7 billion yuan (502.3 million U.S. dollars) of social security funds.The law is to take effect on July 1, 2011.In a proposal made by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on formulating the country's 12th Five-Year Program (2011-2015) on National Economic and Social Development issued Wednesday, the social security system is set to be improved.The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee also voted to adopt the law on law application to civil relationships involving foreign interests, and the revised Organic Law of Villagers' Committees, regarding rural people having greater powers to remove villagers' committee members and to convene meetings to decide village affairs.Also adopted at the close of this legislative session were the amendments to the Law on Deputies to the NPC and Local People's Congresses at Various Levels, which further specify the rights and duties of lawmakers.Lawmakers also adopted a decision to appoint Vice President Xi Jinping as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China.Born in 1953, Xi was appointed by the CPC Central Committee on Oct. 18 as vice-chairman of the CMC of the party.Xi has served in a number of positions related to the armed forces and military reserve affairs during his previous tenures at national and local levels.The top legislature also expelled Li Qihong, former deputy secretary of Zhongshan Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China in southern Guangdong Province and former mayor of Zhongshan City, from the top legislature on suspicion of "seriously violating disciplines" concerning economic activities.

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) - China is still likely to meet its full-year inflation target this year despite the August inflation rate quickening to a 22-month high of 3.5 percent year on year, officials from the country' s top economic planer said Wednesday.In August, the consumer price index (CPI) rose mainly by increased prices of food products like pork and eggs, as the coming Mid-Autumn festival in China had boosted the consumption of food items, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).Further, the price rise of vegetables due to seasonal reasons contributed to the August CPI increase, said the NDRC authorities.The upcoming autumn harvest, which accounts for about 70 percent of China's annual grain output, is expected to stabilize food prices, which have a one-third weighting in the calculation of the CPI, said the NDRC.The NDRC also revealed that China would place central pork reserves on the market, which means pork prices cannot rise higher.Further, the industrial consumer prices are remaining stable with a slight decline, and this is not conducive to inflation, according to the NDRC.These elements are assisting in the drop of the CPI through the rest of the year, and is helpful for China to attain its full year inflation target, it added.China has targeted a 3 percent rise in consumer prices this year.
