A Starbucks worker in New Jersey allegedly spat in police officers' drinks, officials said Tuesday.Park Ridge officers arrested Kevin Trejo, 21, on charges of subjecting a law enforcement officer to contact with bodily fluid, knowingly tampering with a cup of coffee while knowing it was ordered by a law enforcement officer and creating a hazardous or physically dangerous condition.In a statement, Park Ridge Police Chief Joseph Madden said Trejo was arrested after an investigation found that he spat in the drinks of officers who patronized the store where he worked.New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Colligan called Trejo's alleged actions "outrageous.""Every time I think we as society hit bottom, there is a new incident," Colligan said. A Philadelphia police officer who was seen on video pulling down the masks of protesters and spraying chemical irritants in their faces was charged Wednesday with simple assault, reckless endangerment, official oppression, and possession of an instrument of crime, the Philadelphia Inquirer and CNN report.Officer Richard P. Nicoletti, 35, turned himself in on Wednesday.The charges against Nicoletti stem from a June 1 Black Lives Matter protest, when demonstrators blocked I-676 in Philadelphia. Bystander video showed Nicoletti — who was acting as part of the Philadelphia Police SWAT team — approaching three protesters who were kneeling and sitting on the ground.The video shows Nicoletti pull down the demonstrators' masks and spray pepper spray in their faces. He also shoved one of the protesters. The District Attorney's statement claimed Nicoletti sprayed the protesters "without provocation."None of the demonstrators were arrested.According to CNN, the Philadelphia Police Department reviewed the bystander video and opened an investigation on June 24.The officer's lawyer, Fortunato Perri Jr., said Nicoletti was simply following orders."His unit was ordered by commanders to clear the highway with the approved use of tear gas and pepper spray," Perri said, according ot the Inquirer. A new study suggests partisan political rhetoric can influence compliance with emergency orders in natural disaster situations.The study, done by researchers at UCLA, found a level of “hurricane skepticism” among those who voted for President Donald Trump during evacuation warnings for Hurricane Irma in Florida during September 2017. Irma reached a Category 5 status, with sustained winds of 180 mph.Researchers point to a moment when conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh made comments just weeks after Hurricane Harvey hit, and about 12 days before Irma, that hurricane warnings and safety precautions were being blown out of proportion.“[T]here is a desire to advance this climate change agenda, and hurricanes are one of the fastest and best ways to do it,” Limbaugh is quoted in the study, “These storms, once they actually hit, are never as strong as they’re reported.”The research was published this month in Science Advances. It compares evacuation reactions during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Harvey in August 2017 and Irma in September 2017. They used cell phone data for the geography and movement of people, and precinct voting information to estimate neighborhood political preference.“Likely Trump-voting Florida residents were 10 to 11 percentage points less likely to evacuate Hurricane Irma than Clinton voters (34% versus 45%), a gap not present in prior hurricanes,” the study’s authors wrote.Following Limbaugh’s comments, other conversative commentators, including Ann Coulter echoed the sentiments that the warnings were being made to convince people about climate change and not necessarily an indication of the storm’s size.
