An estimated 43 million Americans plan to travel this week and weekend because of the Memorial Day holiday, AAA says.With that information in mind, some traveling by airplane may be wondering what the airport crowds will be like.Information from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics analyzed by consumer research group ValuePenguin reveals the worst day to travel for the holiday weekend is this Thursday, May 24. The season's biggest shopping event of the year might look a lot different than usual with many cities, states and retailers putting in restrictions due to COVID-19.For the first time, Deloitte’s consumer survey found that more shoppers plan to go online Thanksgiving weekend than to visit in-person retailers. The survey found that 58% of those planning to shop on Thanksgiving weekend will do so online, compared to 41% who say they will shop in person. Last year, 61% of shoppers said they planned on shopping in person compared to 51% who said they would shop online. A number of those surveyed said they would do both.If you plan on shopping on Black Friday, the Better Business Bureau offered the following tips:1) Stay Safe. Follow CDC guidelines to healthy and safe while in the store.2) Make the most of Black Friday deals. Start with a list of items and use sale flyers and promotions to determine which store has the best price. Set a budget and stick with it before heading out.3) Read the fine printSome retailers may offer an additional percentage off the purchase, but could exclude certain deals or items such as “door busters.” Watch for companies boasting a high percentage off; the item may be “75% off,” but the original price could be inflated. Carefully check the price tags, terms, and conditions. Research online using a secure wifi connection to see if competitors have the item at a better price.4) Plan out the excursion. Sometimes it's not necessary to wait to see what deals will be offered on Black Friday. Retailers often will release Black Friday flyers weeks ahead of time, so consumers can plan out their shopping spree. Make a map of the stores to visit and what items are at which store. Some retailors only honor sale ads during a certain time frame, or on certain days, and could limit the amount of deeply discounted items available for purchase.5) Sign-up for email alerts. Many stores release their best Black Friday deals and exclusive coupons to people who have subscribed to their emails. Sign up ahead of the holiday season, and then unsubscribe afterwards if needed.6) Do your research. Read product reviews on extremely discounted items. It could be a cheaper model or brand advertised, and not what was expected. An Arizona man was awarded a 5,000 verdict after a jury decided a dentist at a popular dental chain wrongly pulled all his teeth without consent.DeWayne Smith won his case against Western Dental Services and Dr. Steven Nguyen in January, ending a three-year legal battle.“They treated him like garbage,” said Craigg Voigtmann, one of Smith’s attorneys. “They took out all of his teeth and then abandoned him.”Western Dental disputes the allegations. In a statement, the California-based chain called the jury’s decision surprising and disappointing.On a Saturday in January 2015, Smith scheduled an emergency visit at the Western Dental. He was having severe tooth pain in his right upper wisdom tooth. It was his first visit ever at the dental office.“I really don’t like going to dentists but I was in pain,” Smith said.At the appointment, Western employees and Nguyen told him Smith had serious dental issues and that he would eventually need to replace all his teeth with implants or dentures.Smith understood, and under pressure from Western Dental sales staff agreed to a long-term treatment plan. However, Smith said he “made it very clear” that he only wanted to have one tooth pulled that day to relieve the pain.During the procedure, Western Dental staff numbed the area, sedated Smith with nitrous oxide, and then packed his mouth full of gauze, according to court testimony.Smith left not knowing they had extracted all his teeth.“I go to pulling this gauze out and then I realize there’s nothing there on the bottom, and there’s nothing there on the top,” he said. “I just fell to the floor. I didn’t believe what I was seeing.”Employees testified that Nguyen left immediately after the procedure and that no one appeared to tell Smith what they did.After the procedure, Western Dental also sent Smith a ,000 bill, he said.“(It’s) like running over a dog in the middle of the road and driving off,” said Smith’s fiancé, Sharon.Nguyen testified that he had a direct conversation with Smith, who told him he wanted to have all of his teeth extracted that day. Western Dental also produced consent forms with Smith’s signature.But Smith’s attorneys claimed those forms were manufactured after the procedure. And one Western employee testified against the company in hours of damning testimony.Bianca Esquer was a patient care coordinator at Western Dental from 2013 to 2015. She worked directly with Smith during his appointment.In a deposition and at trial, Esquer said that Smith made it clear he did not want a full extraction that day. She also discussed how employees and dentists are paid bonuses and commissions based on how much treatment patients get.Esquer also testified it’s hard to believe anyone would agree to have all their teeth pulled on their first visit and without detailed planning.“You don’t send someone home with a full extraction without teeth,” she said.Smith was not provided dentures from Western Dental until months after his procedure, he said.Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to Nguyen for comment through his attorney, Jeff Tonner. An online platform connecting patients of color with doctors has seen record growth during the pandemic.HUED's goal is to help Black and Latinx patients get what they call “culturally competent care,” which means physicians who understand racial differences.“There are a lot of psychological barriers that exist in the health care system, which lead to fear, distrust, comfortability and lack of access to quality care for those reasons, and it's because it's systemic,” said Kimberly Wilson, founder and CEO of HUED.Wilson attributes HUED's spike in growth to the reckoning over racial disparities brought on by the Black Lives Matter movement, paired with the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.Wilson's own experience of being diagnosed with uterine fibroids launched the idea for the startup. She saw four different white, male doctors near her home. Wilson says all of them either dismissed her pain or told her that she needed a hysterectomy.It wasn't until Wilson saw a Black provider, miles away, that she felt heard and learned of other options.“I wanted to develop a solution to that problem and to improve patient care experiences and really equip patients of color to really be their own self advocate, so that they don't go through the journey that I had,” said Wilson.Patients can sign up to access HUED's database of doctors on their website. An Arizona family is celebrating a major milestone. Baby Henley was born with a congenital heart defect or a hole in her heart. Weighing in at only 4 pounds and 7 ounces, there was a lot of concern about her health because she just would not eat."Because of the hole in her heart, she just could not eat, it was too difficult for her, so she struggled a lot to gain weight," said Megan Beebe, Henley's mother.So, from the age of 5 months old, Henley has relied on a feeding tube to get all of her nutrition."At one point, it was giving her 100% of her nutrition. We would put all of her formula, breast milk through the feeding tube," said Beebe.In her two years since she was born, Henley has had hundreds of doctor's appointments and five surgeries. She has also been working with a feeding therapist based out of the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Arizona. Henley does not have cerebral palsy, but her mother tells KNXV they really liked the specialized therapist they have been working with, so they have stuck with the organization."We just had to keep working our way up, until one day she ate an entire Cheeto Puff all by herself," said Beebe.That one Cheeto Puff was a big milestone for Henley."It took her about 10 full minutes to eat one Cheeto Puff but she ate the whole Cheeto Puff all by herself, did not throw up," said Beebe, talking about the relief they felt. They were finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel of Henley's tough road to being able to eat without the aid of a feeding tube.After 27 months, Henley's feeding tube was finally removed. It was a big moment for Beebe. She tells KNXV she sometimes could not help but feel like a failure as a mother."Our number one job is to feed her and keep her alive, and we couldn't do that," said Beebe."The day we finally got to take her feeding tube out, it was like, it was just a miracle.
