SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California health officials announced Friday the steepest climb in positive coronavirus cases in history."When I'm worried I'll tell you so you can worry with me and we're there," California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said. He's worried hospitals could be overwhelmed if we don't stop the rapid spread of the virus."This rapid rate of rise could be even higher if we don't act soon," Dr. Erica Pan, state epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases, said.Pan added that we could have a higher spike than we saw over the summer.Many are taking their words to heart and stocked up to stay home. San Diegans saw empty shelves and product limits this week across the county, but officials urge consumers not to worry."We didn't put limits on early enough. There's plenty of product in the supply chain and we just thought it would be better to be proactive because when people only buy what they need there's plenty of supply in the supply chain," said. Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, asking customers to only buy what they need.When it comes to another lockdown, Director of the National Institute of Health Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's unnecessary. "Public health measures, not lockdown of the country, but public health measures that are simple and easy to understand. The universal wearing of masks. The physical distancing. The avoiding congregating and crowded places. Outdoors is better than indoors, washing hands. It sounds simple in the context of this ominous outbreak but it can turn it around and that's what we need to do," Fauci said.Dr. Ghaly said that doesn't mean more restrictions are off the table. "If additional changes to the purple tier are required we will be working with our local partners to determine what's there ... We are not looking today at a state-wide stay-at-home order," said Ghaly. 1931

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As COVID-19 cases continue to surge across California, many San Diego County businesses are struggling with the latest restrictions. Richard Bailey, mayor of Coronado, is now asking California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reconsider the latest stay-at-home order.Bailey called the order inconsistent, arbitrary, and ineffective."Shutting down businesses that are not contributing to the spread of COVID will not reduce the number of cases, will not reduce the number of hospitalizations, but it will put tens of thousands of people out of work," said Bailey.Restaurants can no longer offer outdoor dining and playgrounds are closed. Personal care services, hair salons, and barbershops are just some businesses that have to shut down for three weeks. Bailey said while COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations rising should be taken seriously, some of these closures don't make sense."We should all have a really firm understanding of what our risk level is based on our own demographics and our own underlying conditions. There's no data to support that outdoor dining is a significant risk for transmission," Bailey said.In the letter sent to Newsom on Monday, Bailey asked for a reconsideration of the latest health order based on data specific to San Diego County and a new public health strategy."We should treat citizens like adults and put in place recommendations that really emphasize all the best practices that will slow the spread," he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, explained Tuesday that only 10 percent of ICU capacity is currently available in the Southern California region, which San Diego County falls into."The transmission is now so widespread across our state that most all nonessential activities create a serious risk for transmission," said Ghaly.He said part of the regional stay-at-home order is based on our experiences with flattening the curve earlier this year and the success of other countries that implemented similar shutdowns."Belgium, when they imposed a nationwide closure, the positivity rate in just three weeks fell from 21 percent to 8 percent," said Ghaly.Bailey said there should be a better plan to slow the spread without causing significant harm to small businesses along the way."They're picking winners and losers, and unfortunately big businesses are the winners, and small businesses that can barely afford it are becoming the losers," said Bailey.In the meantime, Bailey is encouraging business owners to follow the state orders, so places like salons and restaurants don't lose state licensing."We're really just trying to help businesses be compliant to the state order," he said.Newsom has yet to respond to Bailey's letter. 2733

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California state Assemblyman and San Deigo mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said he received serious threats of physical violence through social media Wednesday evening.Officials from Gloria's campaign said Thursday that the threats have been reported to the San Diego Police Department and are being investigated. ABC 10News reached out to SDPD Thursday regarding the threats, but the department did not immediately respond.Gloria's campaign said the threats come after former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio flooded voters with texts attacking Gloria for his support of SB-145.The bill lets a judge decide whether to force someone to register as a sex offender in certain circumstances after having sex with a minor. The bill is meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.RELATED: Ad accuses Barbara Bry of sleeping on the jobGloria said DeMaio's texts to voters are an effort to support Gloria's opponent in the mayoral race, City Councilmember Barbara Bry. Demaio has said he has not endorsed Bry.Gloria issued the following statement on Thursday regarding the threats:"Since KUSI and Carl DeMaio started knowingly misinforming voters about SB-145 in an effort to support my opponent, I have received multiple messages threatening physical violence. After receiving one last night brandishing a gun, it is clear that my campaign team and I must take this seriously. As such, we have reported the threats to the San Diego Police Department, and they are currently investigating.While I refuse to let this paralyze our campaign, voters deserve to know that this is what Barbara Bry's campaign is inspiring. Her campaign is bringing out the worst of who we are. We are so much better than this, and San Diegans should hold her and her campaign accountable this November."In response, Bry's campaign issued the following statement:"Violence and threats of violence have no place in a civil society, and we must all condemn anyone who promotes such activity.However, it's outrageous that Todd Gloria is blaming me while his supporters are promoting political ads that have resulted in numerous personal threats against me and my campaign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. RELATED: What to do if you or a pet are bitten by a rattlesnake“Like most wild animals, snakes prefer to keep to themselves and are not naturally aggressive. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website.
