KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A woman was shot and killed about 3:30 Saturday morning in Kansas City, Missouri. Police responded to an ambulance call and discovered a woman shot. Kindrea Brown, 24 was found shot to death in her own bed.Janet Brown says she heard gunfire late Friday night but went to bed shortly thereafter. She had no idea that her youngest daughter, who was asleep in her bed, had been shot."I heard gunshots. That's all I heard. We checked and laid back down." said Brown.Brown went to her daughter's room Saturday morning to wake her up for work. "I get her up every morning and mess with her before she goes to work. I went back to wake her up and she didn't wake up. I couldn't get her up. She didn't respond to me anymore." said Brown.No other information has been released. Just over 1 million people filed new jobless claims last week, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s latest report released Thursday. Another 14.5 million people filed continuing claims, leaving unemployment in the U.S. still startlingly high.Amid high unemployment across the country, a new report is showing executive compensation is growing as CEOs continue to cut millions of jobs.“We find that a CEO now earns about 320 times that of a typical worker in their main industry,” said Lawrence Mishel, a labor economist and distinguished fellow at the Economic Policy Institute, an independent think tank in Washington D.C.Mishel just authored a report analyzing CEO compensation. That report shows how in March and April when some CEOs were reported to have cut their salaries during the economic downturn, it wasn’t as big of a sacrifice as it seemed.“Salaries make up about 5 percent of CEO compensation packages,” explained Mishel. “And it seems like when CEOs say they are making a sacrifice, it’s really, I think, is better for press releases than in that they are actually going to take a cut in their standard of living.”The report shows how CEO compensation growth is affecting workers everywhere.“If you look at CEO compensation since, back over the last four decades since 1978, CEO compensation grew 1,167 percent,” said Mishel. “The compensation of a typical worker grew 13 to 14 percent over that period.”The report shows CEO compensation increased by 14 percent just last year and is set to continue to go up this year, even in a recession with companies having to let go of millions of workers.“The wages of the vast majority, the bottom 90 percent, has grown only half as fast as it otherwise would have had the top 1 percent not really expanded like it did,” Mishel explained.Essentially the “profit pie” has not grown proportionate to CEO compensation growth. So, as CEOs are getting significantly higher compensation, it is taking from the pay other workers.“I think this is a problem of corporate governance and our tax policies, and it needs to be addressed,” said Mishel.Proposed solutions include capping CEO compensation and taxing anything above the cap. EPI also suggests allowing shareholders and company workers to directly have a say in their CEOs' pay. However, both solutions are as controversial as the problem. 2359

ABC was in need of a new hit show, and "Roseanne" is the biggest out-of-the-box hit to come along in years.The network's announcement on Friday actually called it an "11th season" renewal -- a nod to the show's roots in the 1990s."We're thrilled that America has welcomed the Conner family back into their homes. We can't wait to see what the 'Roseanne' team has in store for next year," Channing Dungey, the president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement.The "Roseanne" reboot has been the talk of Hollywood ever since initial ratings from Nielsen showed that 18 million people tuned in to it on Tuesday night.The ratings home run is a testament to the enduring power of big-tent broadcast television.With one day of DVR and video-on-demand viewing counted, the new total for the premiere is 21.9 million viewers.Earlier this week, President Donald Trump wrapped himself in the "Roseanne" ratings news. On Wednesday he called Barr -- a longtime friend -- to celebrate. Then on Thursday, he touted the show's success during a speech in Ohio."Look at Roseanne -- look at her ratings," he said. "They were unbelievable. Over 18 million people! And it was about us!""This is 100% in Trump's sweet spot," New York Times TV critic James Poniewozik tweeted Thursday. He said Trump obsesses over ratings, "bashes Hollywood but craves its validation," and "divides the world into things that are 'pro TRUMP' and 'against TRUMP.'"Noting Trump's disinterest in scripted programming, Poniewozik said "I doubt he will ever watch Roseanne, but in his mind, a 'pro TRUMP' thing won."The sitcom's red-state appeal is a factor for sure -- but it's not the only one. In fact, there's been some backlash to the idea that the show's launch was Trump-fueled."The 'Roseanne' narrative has gotten out of control," former Amazon Studios executive Matthew Ball tweeted.He pointed out that the series "was the biggest show on TV" in 1990, so "it is no surprise that with this base plus press attention, audiences turned up. That was the point."An ABC source made a similar point on Thursday, saying, "The Trump of it all is exaggerated."The source described ABC's view of the ratings victory, citing many other reasons why the reboot clicked: "Wickedly funny. Beloved characters. Emotional."The show had a built-in fan base from its previous incarnation on ABC. It benefited from strong writing and producing and a "huge ABC promotional push," the source added.The first two episodes of Season 1 aired on Tuesday. There's not as much Trump talk in the seven remaining episodes, producers and executives told The New York Times on Thursday. But there's lots of social commentary: Unemployment, health care, poverty, opioid abuse and single motherhood are all addressed.Dungey said "Roseanne" was part of a post-election strategy by ABC.Up until Election Day in 2016, "we had spent a lot of time looking for diverse voices in terms of people of color and people from different religions and even people with a different perspective on gender," Dungey told The Times. "But we had not been thinking nearly enough about economic diversity and some of the other cultural divisions within our own country. That's been something we've been really looking at with eyes open since that time."Like the original "Roseanne" in the 1990s, the show portrays a working class family. Barr is both a Trump supporter in real life and on the show."People gather round and they see themselves in this family," Disney-ABC Television Group president Ben Sherwood told The Times. "How many times have we seen a super strong opening for a Christian movie that the Hollywood promotional industrial complex never talked about?"Expectations will be high and remain so for the rest of the season. JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV)-- This was the first weekend San Diegans were able to enjoy the snow-packed mountains. But morning road closures made traveling uphill from San Diego difficult. By early afternoon, most road restrictions were lifted, and thousands of people made their way to the tourist towns. To Teak Nichols, Julian is just home. But he knows it is a special place. "It's been really magical the last few days. So I can understand why people would want to be a part of that," Nichols said. With its old-world charm and snow-packed roofs, Julian is an escape from the daily grind. "We wanted to get away from the city," San Diegan Sandra Aguiar said. She brought her husband's family from Tijuana to experience the allure of the small town. But she said it was not an easy ride. "It took about an hour and 45 minutes," Aguiar said. "Then two miles from here, it was bumper to bumper."Until 1 p.m. Saturday, California Highway Patrol officers slowed down drivers to enforce chain controls along State Route 79 at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Many parts of Sunrise Highway were also shut down due to icy conditions. "In some parts, it was kind of scary. We were sliding a little bit," Aguiar said. Even after they finally made it into town, the waiting continued. Aguilar's main reason for coming up the hill was to get a bite of Nichol's mother's famous dessert at Mom's Pies. "I've tried Julian pies before, but these are the best," Aguiar said. Nichols said it is a recipe that has been kept a secret since 1984. It is a seasonal favorite that sells out, every time it snows."It's gotten busier as the day has gone on," Nichols said. "Apparently, the road opened up, so we got a little bit busier after that."Snow days may slow down traffic and clog up parking, but customers said it is all worthwhile."It's homemade, and it makes it better because we're with family," Aguiar said. "The ice cream was also delicious with it. I mean, it's well worth it!"By mid-afternoon, CHP opened up SR-79 with no restrictions. 2028

  

Jaelynn Willey, the teen shot in the St. Mary's County School shooting died Thursday evening, the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office reported. "The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, on behalf of the Willey family, advises that on March 22, 2018, at 11:34 pm, Jaelynn Rose Willey died, surrounded by her family. It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we provide this update," the office reported in a press release. Willey was taken off life support on Thursday, her family had announced.During a press conference, Melissa Willey, the mother of Jaelynn Willey said that her daughter was critically brain dead after 17-year-old Austin Wyatt Rollins allegedly walked into Great Mills High School with a gun and shot her and a 14-year-old boy.The FBI urges that if anyone has information regarding the shooting to call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).  896
