My son, Bob, was a drug addict. He died of a drug overdose January 29, 2014 at the age of 29. He spent the last 9-10 years of his life battling drug addiction, in and out of jail for drug related issues, and living on the street in between trying to get the monkey off his back. Bob comes from a middle-class family. He has two sisters, two brothers, and eight nieces and nephews. I am a retired teacher and his dad is a general contractor who owns his own business. It’s hard to believe that this charming, articulate, smart, people magnet could find his way down into the miserable life of drug addiction.Bob was the cutest little boy. He had white blonde hair and the biggest grin. He was the most easy-going kid to raise. And boy could he talk! There was no such thing as a stranger to Bob. He would go up and start a conversation with anyone. People would be amazed that this little guy would carry on an interesting conversation with them. He went to great schools in a great school district and had wonderful friends. In high school, Bob and his friends went to parties and drank alcohol and smoked marijuana (as he told us later). But he didn’t get in any trouble and graduated from Clovis High School. It was after high school that the real trouble began. Bob moved in with some friends and somehow, found out about Oxycontin. A friend gave them some that he stole from his mom or grandmother who had cancer. They continued to buy them from him and probably other people. It got to a point where they started committing crimes to get money to buy the drugs. They robbed a pizza delivery person and broke into someone’s house to get the drug. This ended with Bob and some of his friends landing in jail. It all happened so fast we were shocked. At the time, no one knew much about Oxycontin. I talked to a police officer and he said this was something new to hit the streets and they didn’t know that much about it. At about this time, Rush Limbaugh was in the news with his problems with addiction to this drug. Bob and many of his friends from Clovis High and Buchanan High were caught in this first wave as the addiction to Oxy was a gateway to the harder drugs. Bob did his time in jail and entered a rehab program. He was there a year and did good in the program but eventually went back to drugs. He spent the next 9 years sliding down to a point where he was living on the streets just trying to do whatever he could to get drugs. It was heartbreaking for his family. We all tried to help him. He went back to rehab but walked out. He detoxed several times at home (what a horrible thing that is to experience) but each time he went back to drugs. His great big world got smaller and smaller until it was just drugs. At one point in this I just could not take anymore. I was driving to school and I just broke down and cried. I told God – I can’t carry this burden any longer. I felt a physical release as God took that weight off my shoulders. I felt him say, “I will carry this for you. I will help you every step of the way.” I didn’t get the sense that God was going to fix Bob. But that He would walk this road with me. This is how I was able to get through Bob’s journey. It is so hard when your child is struggling with addiction. It’s not something you talk to people about openly. You see people in the grocery store and talk about your family. Johnny is doing great in college; Suzy was just crowned Homecoming queen. What’s Bob doing? I’d make things up because I knew Bob did not want people to know, I was too tired to keep telling the story over and over, and I hated the pity I would see in their eyes if I did tell it. We miss him. His nieces and nephew miss him. We couldn’t figure out how to save him. We tried to do all the things you hear about – use tough love, make them hit rock bottom. But to be honest, its all bullshit. We took a tough stance with Bob and followed the rehab’s advice. Bob’s best friend’s parents did not go that route. They kept their son home and continued to enable him and try and keep him going. His friend died of an overdose a year and a half after Bob. His mom feels guilty for not following the advice to use tough love. I feel guilty for not keeping Bob home and with us. We both took different approaches and both of our beautiful boys are dead. So how did we get through this? We aren’t “through” this and never will be. While Bob’s pain is over, our pain continues. Our guilt continues. How is it possible that with all of Bob’s support – the people who loved him so much – we couldn’t help him? Mother’s are supposed to take care of their children. I failed. A few days after Bob died, I sat at my computer and wrote a long letter about Bob and his story. So many people knew Bob and I knew it would be like death by razor blades to have to talk about Bob. I figured if I gave them a copy of the letter and sent it out to my friends and co-workers, I wouldn’t need to explain in person what happened. I didn’t realize the effect this letter would have on people. I heard back from so many people who had been through or were going through a similar situation. It was an eye opener for many people. I was contacted by rehab programs asking permission to use the letter. I hope it helps someone. I think Bob’s experience taught us that addiction can happen to anyone. Addicts are from all walks of life and all socioeconomic levels. Yes, they make their own choices. We all make mistakes. I have the greatest respect for people who have overcome addiction or are in the process. They are super heroes because the pull of drugs is so very strong. The effect it has on the brain is so difficult, almost impossible, to overcome. I am angry at the creators of Oxycontin. They have destroyed so many lives. They knew what they were doing and they knew what was happening with their drugs. If I could talk to Bob, I would tell him how sorry we are that we could not help him. I would tell him how much he is loved and missed by his family. And I would tell him about his candy tree. Bob loved candy. Everyone always told him he would regret it when he was older if he kept eating so much candy. He had the last laugh. He never had to regret eating candy. Bob’s Grandpa made a candy tree in honor of Bob. It has baskets of all Bob’s favorite candy hanging on it and a picture of Bob on top. When Bob’s nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives come to visit, they all eat candy from Bob’s candy tree. This would make Bob happy. 6495

NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission and the asteroid Bennu have had a date planned for two years, and just after noon ET today, they finally got to meet face to face. OSIRIS-REx fired its thrusters for a small burn, putting it about 4.3 miles from Bennu, marking the end of its journey to the asteroid.The mission -- which stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer -- is NASA's first asteroid sample return mission. It launched in September 2016 and will spend two years up close and personal with Bennu. First images of the asteroid from the spacecraft's perspective have appeared as it got closer and closer.On Tuesday, the spacecraft will fly within 5 miles of Bennu, which will help design future orbits and map the surface.Over the next year, OSIRIS-REx will survey the asteroid using five scientific instruments on board the spacecraft. These instruments will help it determine a safe location from which to collect a small sample from Bennu's surface that will be returned to Earth in September 2023."Bennu's low gravity provides a unique challenge for the mission," said Rich Burns, OSIRIS-REx project manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "At roughly 0.3 mile in diameter, Bennu will be the smallest object that any spacecraft has ever orbited."The sample from Bennu, a near-Earth asteroid, could help scientists understand not only more about asteroids that could impact Earth but about how planets formed and life began.OSIRIS-REx has a camera suite, a laser altimeter for 3D mapping, a thermal emission spectrometer to take temperature and mineral content and spectrometers to measure X-rays, nearly infrared and visible light.An arm mechanism called TAGSAM will reach out to collect the sample from Bennu's surface, making contact with the asteroid for five seconds in July 2020. During this contact, the arm will use a nitrogen gas burst to stir up rock and other materials on the surface so it can capture them. There is enough nitrogen for three attempts if the first is unsuccessful.NASA said the estimated 2.1-ounce sample size equates to about 30 sugar packets worth of dirt and rocks.The arm has a full range of motion, with joints capable of movement comparable to shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. It was "flexed" in space for the first time on November 14."The TAGSAM exercise is an important milestone, as the prime objective of the OSIRIS-REx mission is to return a sample of Bennu to Earth," said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona, Tucson. "This successful test shows that, when the time comes, TAGSAM is ready to reach out and tag the asteroid."In 2021, it will be time for the spacecraft to essentially turn around and begin its two-year journey home. The sample will be packed into a capsule that will drop in the Utah desert in 2023.For two years after the return, the sample will be cataloged and analyzed. Afterward, 75% of the returned sample will remain at NASA's Johnson Space Flight Center so it can be used for more research by scientists from around the world.Why did NASA select Bennu out of the 780,000 known asteroids in our solar system?It was discovered in 1999, and scientists have been studying it ever since. The asteroid fits a number of criteria that make it intriguing and convenient.Bennu is relatively close to Earth, and its orbit even crosses that of our planet, making a close approach every six years. Though small asteroids can rotate very quickly, Bennu has a diameter just a bit bigger than the height of the Empire State Building and rotates relatively slowly, each 4.3 hours. This means OSIRIS-REx can match its velocity and touch down briefly.The asteroid could pass close to Earth, closer than the moon, in 2135, with even closer approaches possible in 2175 and 2195. A direct hit is unlikely, but the data gathered during this mission can help determine the best ways to deflect near-Earth asteroids.The asteroid is also old and well-preserved, full of valuable materials that may even contain clues about how life began. Bennu is essentially a leftover from the formation of our solar system billions of years ago, although some of the minerals inside it could be even older.This carbon-rich asteroid could be full of organic molecules, metals, platinum and even water -- the essential ingredients for life. It's because of objects like Bennu that these resources were delivered to Earth during its formation.Asteroids could even serve as fuel stations for robotic and human missions if we can unlock the hydrogen and oxygen inside them, NASA said.Bennu probably broke off of a larger asteroid in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter a couple billion years ago. This knocked it through space until an orbit close to Earth locked it in place. And Bennu is believed to be a grouping of rocks held together by gravity rather than a single object.But its orbit drifts 0.18 miles each year toward the sun, and OSIRIS-REx will enable researchers to understand why and to predict Bennu's movements. This could also explain how it ended up as a near-Earth asteroid."The story of this asteroid is the story of the solar system," said Bashar Rizk, instrument scientist for OSIRIS-REx. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) – A car crashed into a power pole in National City late Monday evening, killing a teen driver and leaving his female passenger trapped in the wreckage.The crash was reported at around 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of E 16th Street, according to National City police.Police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his Cadillac sedan and veered into a pole.The driver died at the scene, and it took responding emergency crews over an hour to pull the unconscious passenger from the wreckage. She was transported to the hospital with severe head trauma and other life-threatening injuries.The driver and passenger are believed to be in their late teens.Several people who said they were family members of the victims arrived at the scene to talk to police.No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. 895

Many ignored the Governor's stay-at-home order and social distancing.With more snow in the near future, some residents in Mt. Laguna fear tourists will bring in the Coronavirus with them. Children playing in the snow: it's cute and seasonal in East County. But Mt. Laguna resident and business owner Nica Knite says, please stay away. "It's only been a few days people, you could hang at home for a few days. Come on," Knite said. Last weekend, Knite was appalled to see hundreds of cars lined up along Mile Marker 19 on Sunrise Highway. Families seemingly ignored social distancing rules. "The idea of recreating outside and going for a walk might seem like a healthy thing to do. But if people are playing in the snow and someone coughs on that snow and your kid falls onto that same snow, they have the opportunity to contract the virus," Knite said. "So it becomes a giant petri dish of danger."Scientists say COVID-19 could have an easier time surviving and reproducing in colder temperatures. It's because of the large crowds and cooler temperatures that on Sunday, Cleveland National Forest Rangers closed all their campgrounds, day-use areas, and two of their most popular trails: Three Sisters Falls and Cedar Creek Falls. "When you're hiking the trails, they're very narrow, and with the number of people we had, they absolutely could not have any kind of social distancing," Mike Kobliska, Assistant Public Information Officer of the Cleveland National Forest, said. MILWAUKEE — Protesters marched the 38 miles between Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee on Tuesday to call for justice for Jacob Blake and encourage early voting.The Jacob Blake “Rally for Justice” began just after midnight in Kenosha, and the marchers wound its way through the streets of southeastern Wisconsin more than 30 miles to downtown Milwaukee nearly 18 hours later.Organizers hope the energy from the march will carry voters to the ballot boxes this month, as early voting gets underway in Wisconsin.Tanya McClean, the executive director of Leaders of Kenosha, led the group on the march.“We’re going to continue fighting for Jacob and all the families that have lost love ones to police brutality,” McClean said.Jacob Blake’s uncle says the support for his nephew is appreciated.“These people walked 38 miles baby, that’s commitment for justice for little Jake,” Justin Blake said.Justin Blake also demanded that Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey be fired, indicted, and convicted. Sheskey shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back in August, leaving him paralyzed.Justin Blake said the family would ask local elected officials to make a pledge against systemic racism.“We’re going to ask you to sign a document to tell us where you stand on the shooting that you saw and the whole world saw. So that people can vote consciously about where you stand on systemic racism” Justin Blake said.Justin Blake says his nephew remains paralyzed from the waist down in an Illinois rehabilitation center, working on his upper body strength.The investigation into the shooting has been handed over to an independent consultant.
