SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said.The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New data from WalletHub shows how California ranks on a list of best and worst states for military retirees.Overall, California ranked high when it comes to quality of life and health care, but much lower when it comes to the economy and homelessness.WalletHub ranked states on a number of other factors, with one being best and 25 being average.In the quality of life category, California comes in at 10th on the list of 51 states and the District of Columbia.From there, the data starts looking less attractive. When it comes to the economic environment, California ranked low coming in at 48th.California also ranked 48th for veterans per capita, yet ranked 49th for the percentage of homeless veterans.The area where California ranked best was number of VA health facilities per number of veterans where the state took the 3rd spot.The data also found that red states are more friendly towards military retirees than blue states. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for the suspects in a deadly Mountain View park shooting that took place during a soccer game. Police were called to the Willie Henderson Sports Complex on the 1000 block of South 45th Street just after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a shooting. When they arrived, police found a man who had been shot. First responders tried to save the man, but he died at the scene. Investigators say little is known about the circumstances leading up to the man’s death. According to police, the park was crowded at the time of the shooting with soccer players and spectators. “It is not believed the victim was involved with the soccer game that was underway,” police added. Although police haven’t identified the victim, family members who arrived on scene say the victim is 31-year-old Armando Torres Jr. Family members say he was the father of a 2-year-old girl. The suspects are only described as three Hispanic men in their teens to twenties wearing hooded sweatshirts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation say Donovan State Prison officials confiscated a cell phone Tuesday from an inmate who was allegedly using the phone to harass and threaten a woman in New York.According to Christina Neal, 37-year-old Brandon Baker, a prisoner serving 75 years to life at Donovan in South San Diego County, contacted her nearly two weeks ago.“I started getting messages from someone named Brandon Baker, but I had never heard of him before,” Neal said. Neal says Baker found her on Facebook through mutual friends and family members and then began sending her inappropriate messages through Facebook messenger.“He put ‘ma, what’s up, you looking really good. I’d like to get to know you,’” Neal said. “and he was like, ‘you're really sexy.’ And I didn't respond. So then a couple of days later, I got another message from him, and he's talking about my daughter.” “So I was just like ‘I don't know who you are. I don't know how you got pictures of me and my daughter, but please leave me alone, I'm married, and I don't want to have anything to do with you,’” Neal added.Neal says the tone of the messages escalated and Baker told her he would be getting out next month.“He said he was gonna come to my house and said he was gonna rape me,” she said. “I’m very nervous, just because hearing what (he) did, (he) doesn’t seem like (he’s) that nice of a person.”CDCR says they are investigating the case, and Baker could face more punishment depending on what they find on the phone they seized.They released the following statement:“Contraband cellphones are often used to in criminal and illicit activities, conduct drug trafficking, enable gang communication, and harass and intimidate victims and witnesses.
