ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. Election officials across the country say they are worried about their staff's safety as the presidential race remains too close to call three days after Election Day.Officials in battleground states like Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania say ballot counters have face threats from protesters who have been demonstrating in front of election centers in their states."I can tell you that my wife and my mother are very concerned for me,” Joe Gloria, the registrar in Clark County, Nevada, said during a press conference Thursday.There have been no reports of violence against ballot counters as of Friday morning. However, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia reports that police have thwarted a plot to attack the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where Philadelphia-area ballots are currently being tallied.Conservative protesters have also gathered at ballot-counting centers in Phoenix and Atlanta. The demonstrators have called for officials to continue counting ballots in Arizona — where Biden's lead has shrunk in recent days — while the AP reports that protesters in Atlanta were concerned about voter fraud.In Michigan, state Attorney General Dana Nessel reported on Twitter that members of her staff were being harassed."Dear members of the public: Please stop making harassing & threatening calls to my staff," Nessel tweeted. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A Pauma Valley man accused of ambushing three San Diego County sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma, sparking a nearly six-hour standoff in which he suffered a gunshot wound, was charged today with three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm on a peace officer.Arraignment for 28-year-old Jose Nieto at Palomar Medical Center was postponed until Jan. 11 because he was deemed medically unfit for the proceeding while being treated for the gunshot wound he sustained during last Thursday's standoff.The complaint against Nieto includes allegations of personal use and discharge of a firearm. He faces 33 years and eight months in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon.The standoff began around 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 20, when deputies Cory Crawford, Jared Muli, and John Avedesian went to a home in the 156-00 block of Adams Drive in response to a a 911 call from a man who said "he needed help and didn't feel safe in his home."As the three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down. The deputies were not injured.Authorities spend hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home about 10 p.m. and found Nieto inside with a gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. 1598

Just ask a family in Fallbrook that’s created a new card game they call, "It's Contagious," featuring a not-so-serious side of dealing with the virus while allowing players to work through their anxiety."Folks will find that the artwork on the cards is really relatable," said mom, Lola Pickett. "And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. That’s hilarious," said Lola as she and her husband showed off various cards. "So, we have things like that. We have home haircut. We have the t-p shortage which we’re going through again." "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre.
