The start of the school year can bring up some mixed emotions: excitement and anxiety.Four-year-old Vivienne Villa is ready to make new friends and show off some of her back-to-school gear when she starts kindergarten next week. Her mom, Priya, knows the big jump from preschool to kindergarten can be tough on a kid."She's been home with me the last two years and it's just been us during the day, so it'll be a big transition," Villa said.Increased work load, longer days, and more time away from mom and dad can add on stress for children. When Villa dropped her son off at Kindergarten a few years ago, she learned that confidence can be contagious."What really worked is I wouldn't linger when I said goodbye. I said have a great day, I can't wait for you to tell me about it, and then I would leave," Villa added.Dr. Beth Creel, the Director of the Behavioral Health Department at the Children's Heart Center in Las Vegas, says Priya is right. Kids can pick up on our emotions, so it's a good idea to try to keep a level head.Dr. Creel says children can get anxious ahead of the school year because of the uncertainty and lack of control. Creating an eating and sleeping schedule and sticking to it ahead of the school year can help them feel more prepared for a busy school year.To ease separation anxiety, Dr. Creel suggests sneaking a family picture or a sweet note into your child's backpack or lunch box."Something to show that after an eight hour day, a five hour day, a four hour day, there is still that connection and mommy and daddy aren't going anywhere," Dr. Creel said. When children get home, open communication is crucial, but sometimes what your child doesn't say is more telling."Sometimes it's a red flag. Why don't they want to talk about that? That's something that I think parents have to also keep in mind. Pay attention to the silence as well," Dr. Creel said.Homework can be a daunting task for the start of the school year. If a child is overwhelmed by their school work Dr. Creel suggests creating a work space for the individual child that is organized and away from distractions. If back-to-school shopping is in the budget, Dr. Creel says buying something new that your child can give an uneasy child an extra confidence boost. 2272

There are many changes planned to revamp Nashville International Airport including the newly unveiled parking garage. Part of the plan is to give the airport a face lift which includes replacing the terminal carpet that surprisingly has garnered popularity. The brown carpet with its unique lines and swirly designs was installed in 2010. Earlier this year, the BNA carpet gained its own Instagram account with more than 6,500 followers and over 100 posts. Its Instagram stories is flooded with travelers tagging the account as they typically walk through the airport and show the carpet. In case you are a fan, you can purchase clothes, shoes, luggage, and phone covers with the same pattern on an online merchandise boutique called Ray Reid. The popularity also resembles the love for the iconic, retro carpet at Portland Airport before it was removed a few years ago. It also had social media accounts and countless merchandise that offered the pattern.Airport officials in Nashville are aware of the BNA carpet fame. However, it will slowly phase out by the start of the summer of 2020.By 2023, it will all be updated with either terrazzo or new (with a different pattern) carpet, according to a BNA spokesperson. The changes are all part of a bigger picture called BNA Vision. The plan will include demolishing the existing Short Term Parking Garage next month to make room for a bigger and more modern garage.Expansion is also underway for Concourse D and terminal wings, and people should start seeing visible of that in January when steel starts going up. Concourse D will add six new domestic aircraft gate, a variety of restaurants and retail options, and a live music stage. It is expected to be completed by 2020.Additionally, there will be a major renovation of the terminal lobby, which means expanding security screening checkpointsAll of the BNA Vision plan is expected to be finished by 2023. 1918

The suspect accused of carrying out Friday's terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, was likely on his way to carry out a third shooting before he was stopped by authorities, New Zealand's top police official said.Fifty people were killed when a gunman opened fire inside two mosques last week. Authorities have charged Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian man, with murder in connection with the incident. More charges are expected.Police Commissioner Mike Bush said Wednesday that authorities "absolutely" believe they stopped the suspect "on the way to a further attack.""Lives were saved," he added, but declined to go into detail to not "traumatize others."The first funerals were held Wednesday for Khaled Mustafa, 44, and his son, 15-year-old Hamza.Hundreds of people stood in solemn silence at Memorial Park Cemetery, where graves had been dug to bury dozens of victims.New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda was back in Christchurch, Wednesday, to offer comfort to those affected by the tragedy.Speaking at news conference, Arden announced that the country will will hold a two minute silence to commemorate the victims of the mosque massacre this coming Friday."There's a sense among New Zealanders that they wish to show to the Muslim community their support, their love," said Arden."But the challenge for all of us going forward is that they're safety is assured by making sure we never have an environment where violent extremist ideology can flourish. And that means addressing racism and extremism wherever it emerges."Ardern also announced that the Islamic call to prayer will be broadcast Friday on TV New Zealand and Radio New Zealand in support of the country's Muslim population. While many family members have expressed understanding about the time it is taking to receive victims' bodies for burial, others have voiced frustration. Islamic funerals typically are held as soon as possible after death.Mohamed Safi, 23, lost his father in the attack at the Al Noor mosque. He said the authorities have not explained their process for identifying his father's body and have been slow to offer details."They're offering nothing, they're saying, 'We're doing our procedures and process.' Why do I not know what you're doing to identify the bodies?" Safi told CNN."They know that our Islam is about patience. They're testing our patience right now," Safi said.Ardern said she shared the frustrations voiced by the victims of loved ones, but also noted that authorities were under significant strain due to the number of victims. She said 30 of the victim's bodies have been identified and approved for release."I know the process has been incredibly difficult, frustratingly slow from the perspective of family members, but on the (other) side, I've seen those who are working on this process as well and I can also acknowledge that they are working incredibly hard too," Ardern said.Arden said she had met with Muslim community leaders and her primary aim was to reunite victims with their families. "I am absolutely united for our determination to reunite families with their loved ones."On Tuesday, Ardern had used her first appearance in Parliament since the attack to praise the "extraordinary courage" demonstrated by mosque worshipers and police during one of the country's "darkest days."She also noted that "there have rightly been questions around how this could have happened here. In a place that prides itself on being open, peaceful, diverse. And there is anger that it has happened here."Since the massacre, Ardern has spoken with emotion and empathy, reassuring families and updating the public with the latest on the investigation. It has been the 37-year-old's face -- and not that of the suspected shooter -- that has come to dominate media coverage.During her Tuesday address, Ardern vowed never to use the alleged shooter's name: "He is a terrorist, he is a criminal, he is an extremist, but he will, when I speak, be nameless, and to others I implore you: Speak the names of those who were lost rather than the name of the man who took them. He may have sought notoriety but we in New Zealand will give him nothing -- not even his name." 4191

The Senate Tuesday voted overwhelmingly 90 to 8 to confirm President Donald Trump's pick for secretary of defense, Mark Esper, giving the Pentagon its first permanent chief since James Mattis stepped down in January. While he received broad bipartisan backing, several Democratic presidential hopefuls including Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren voted against Esper who had been Army Secretary and had briefly served as the acting secretary of defense after Trump's initial pick to replace Mattis, Patrick Shanahan's nomination dramatically imploded last month.Following his confirmation vote Trump is expected to formally appoint Esper later on Tuesday and a Pentagon spokesman told reporters a swearing in ceremony is expected Tuesday evening.Esper, a former army officer and West Point classmate of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also worked as a senior staffer on Capitol Hill.Though he received broad bipartisan support he has received some criticism from at least one Democratic lawmaker over his ties to Raytheon, a major defense contractor, where he worked as a lobbyist. The unprecedented length of time without a permanent secretary of defense had been cited as a problem by both Republican and Democrat lawmakers as well as veterans of the defense department.A large number of senior roles at the Pentagon continue to lack permanent appointees.Esper had to step down as acting secretary following his formal nomination due to regulations. Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer has been performing the acting role as Esper went through the confirmation process, making him the third consecutive acting defense secretary since Mattis resigned. 1705
