When you think of police officers, you may think of the badge or the local precinct may come to mind, but a lasso?“You got to have a lasso in a small town,” Sgt. Jace Peterson said with a laugh.Sgt. Peterson says it is an item he never leaves home without. Home is Nephi, Utah and it has been most of his life.“Oh, I was a good kid who got in very little trouble,” Peterson said.Nephi is a "blink and you miss it" stop along Interstate-15 between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.Sgt. Peterson is just one of 10 full-time officers.“I just patrol all the corners of town, backstreets and the main thoroughfares,” he said.A disorderly conduct call sometimes comes in the form of a farm animal.“We’ve had cows and goats,” Peterson said. “I mean you name it and they run loose around here.”Sgt. Peterson knows he is just one call away from a surprise class reunion.“It makes it entertaining when you stop somebody you know or you’re on a call with somebody you went to high school with,” he said.Life moves at a slower pace in these parts. It is a stark contrast from what officers in major cities across the country are dealing with.“The rioting and the protest,” Sgt. Peterson said slowly shaking his head. “I mean, it starts to wear on you a little bit and know that other officers aren’t as lucky as we are.”The Nephi Chief of Police echoes those sentiments.“You know, the great thing is I had the big city policing experience when I was young,” said Chief Mike Morgan. “When I was young, I could get out and do the things that needed to get done and I was able to learn; that experience brought me here.”Like Peterson, Chief Morgan has come home.“There’s no place like home,” Chief Morgan said with a chuckle. The move from big city life means big changes.“There are no protests at all down here,” Chief Morgan said. The department is prepared for the day some of the bigger city issues may creep into town.“We’ve got all the equipment I could ever ask for and it’s such a great community,” Sgt. Peterson said.Even a worldwide pandemic is not affecting the small-town police force much.“I mean, we know it’s there and we know it’s just one bad day away, but until then, we’re just going to sort of enjoy it,” Sgt. Peterson said. 2231

While many have people lost their jobs over the past few months, for some people, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a scenario that made it easier for them to find work. Lashaunda Garner is one of those people.“In my situation I was out of work for 16 years,” said Garner. After nearly two decades, Garner found a work-from-home job at the start of the pandemic.“As soon as I got the job, I was like ‘oh my gosh, I can do something past my disability,’” she added.Garner suffers from severe PTSD and anxiety, which makes it difficult to work in a traditional work environment.“In my case, there are certain sounds, certain smells and things that trigger your depression and when I am at home, I can limit those things,” said Garner. While work-from-home options were previously limited. During forced business closures and stay at home orders, the U.S. saw a surge in work-from-home jobs, especially call center positions.“The pandemic struck, and all of the call centers had to send their agents home. This was worldwide. This was something that never happened before,” said Alan Hubbard. “Some of the agents that were sent home in India, the Philippines and China didn’t have the physical infrastructure in order to do those jobs.”Hubbard is with the National Telecommuting Institute (NTI), which helps people with disabilities work from home. In Garner’s case, it had already helped her setup a home office and everything needed to work from home when the surge happened.“You hear people say, ‘you aren’t your job’ right, but for a lot of people, that is how they identify themselves,” said Hubbard. “That they are working, that they are productive. That is the opportunity that we try to provide.”Garner is just one example out of many people with disabilities who have been able to find work-from-home jobs and thrive in that environment over the past few months.Since the beginning of the pandemic, NTI has had a significant increase in companies come to them for help finding workers. They have four times as many available jobs to fill and have actually been able to place nearly 200 people in work-from-home jobs in the last six weeks. When, typically, it places about 50 people a month.“That is what the pandemic has done. It has opened up this opportunity for these folks,” said Hubbard.Hubbard is currently working with a dozen companies looking to hire another 240 people.Lashaunda is thriving in her current role and hoping her story inspires not just other people with disabilities, but the millions looking for work right now.“Do the best you can and fight for what you want,” said Garner. “It may take you, hopefully not 16 years, but you will end up getting it.” 2681

When Kyle and Jessica Frankenstein found out they were pregnant, they were given Sunday, October 29 as their due date — so there was always the possibility of Jessica going a few days past her due date and delivering a Frankenstein baby on Halloween. Well, it happened! Jessica gave birth to Oskar Gray Frankenstein on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 after 14 hours of labor at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. "Honestly, I didn't think he would hold out till Halloween," Jessica Frankenstein said. "My husband and I discussed what it would be like having him on Halloween and how neat it would be when he gets older."Baby Frankenstein weighed in at 6 pounds (3 kilograms), 9 ounces (255 grams) and is 20 inches (50 centimeters) long."I am utterly in love with this little man and I couldn't have imagined a more perfect baby," Jessica said.Congratulations to the happy parents. FOLLOW Kelly Bazzle on Twitter 929

When students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas return to class after spring break next week, they'll be required to carry clear backpacks. The move is meant to ramp up security measures after last month's deadly shooting and a series of breaches since then."Clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus," said Broward County School Superintendent Robert Runcie said in a letter sent to parents. 423

WILMINGTON, Del. – Joe Biden said in a speech Wednesday that his campaign believes it’s clear that they’re on track to win enough states to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.“I’m not here to declare that we’ve won, but I am here to report that when the count is finished, we believe we'll be the winners,” said the former vice president from Wilmington, Delaware.Watch his speech below:Biden’s remarks came around the same time that The Associated Press projected he would win Wisconsin, bringing him to 248 electoral votes as of about 4 p.m. ET. At that same time, President Donald Trump had racked up 214.“Of all the votes counted, we have won Wisconsin by 20,000 votes, virtually the same margin as when Trump won that state four years ago,” said Biden.Biden is also leading in Michigan and Nevada, but by slim margins. If he were to claim those two states as well, he would reach the crucial 270-vote threshold.“In Michigan, we lead by over 35,000 votes and it’s growing,” said Biden. “It’s a substantially bigger margin than when President Trump won Michigan in 2016.”As for Pennsylvania, The Associated Press still had Trump leading, but Biden had made steady advances throughout Wednesday.“I feel very good about Pennsylvania. Virtually all the remaining ballots to be counted were cast by mail and we’ve been winning 78% of the votes by mail in Pennsylvania,” said Biden. The Democratic candidate said it’s been a long and difficult campaign, but admitted it’s been a more difficult time for our country. He said once the election is over, he hopes to bring Americans together, despite the partisan nature of the country.“I know this won’t be easy. I’m not na?ve, neither of us are,” said Biden referring to him and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris. “I know how deep and hard the opposing views are in our country on so many things, but I also know this as well. To make progress, we have to stop treating out opponents as enemies. We are not enemies.”He said what brings us together as Americans stronger than anything that can tear us apart and promised to be a president to the whole country, not just those who voted for him.“The presidency itself is not a partisan institution,” he said. “It’s the one office in this nation that represents everyone, and it demands a duty of care for all Americans and that is precisely what I will do. I will work as for those who didn’t vote for me as I will for those did vote for me.”Biden stressed that every vote must be counted to determine the winner of the election. His comments were likely in reaction to the Trump campaign's lawsuits that are asking for vote counts in Pennsylvania and Michigan to be stopped, claiming lack of “transparency.” The president's campaign is also requesting a recount in Wisconsin, where Biden was narrowly declared the winner.“No one is going to take our democracy away from us, not now, not ever,” he said. “America has come too far. America has fought too many battles. America has endured too much to ever let that happen. We the people will not be silenced. We the people will not be bullied. We the people will not surrender.”Biden ended by saying that he’s confident he will emerge victorious, but it won’t just be his win.“It will be a victory for the American people, for our democracy, for America. And there will be no blue states and red states when we win, just the United States of America.” 3429
