For three years, Comal in Denver has been a place for aspiring entrepreneurs to chase their culinary dreams.“I like to cook. I enjoy it,” Comal employee Martha Ordonez said in Spanish. When the restaurant first opened, workers were a group of women from the neighborhood. Most of them were immigrants who had been living in the United States for a while.Now the food incubator also serves refugees from Syria and Iraq who are fairly new arrivals to the U.S.The idea is to provide a platform and safe place for people in the community to learn skills that can better their lives and the lives of their families.“Business skills, language skills, marketing, basically anything you would need to run your own business,” Comal founder Slavica Park said.However, it’s become more than just a place for training.“I love my culture, and I know that culture can provide more than just a dish,” Comal employee Silvia Hernandez said.It’s become a place of cross-cultural exchange. A place where the workers and the customers can experience something different in their own backyard. “We really encourage them to dig deep, to go back to even their grandma’s recipes, because we really want it to be authentic and specific to their culture,” Park said.“Sometimes I have to call my mom to ask her ‘oh you know this dish? What did you put in that dish?” Hernandez said.Silvia Hernandez is from Mexico City. She’s been cooking at Comal since its inception.“Today I cook chicken with creamy poblano sauce, and I remember my mom cook the poblano sauce, but I add a little bit of spinach so I put a little bit of my own today,” Hernandez said.After a year of learning about the industry, Hernandez was able to open her own catering business.It’s an accomplishment she doesn’t think would have been possible if it wasn’t for her time at Comal, and her ability to get paid while she learned.“That’s good because that’s how we support our families. That’s how I support my family.”Hernandez said a lot of people who work at Comal are looking for hope. And what helps even more is when immigrants like her are welcomed into society.“While Denver has been extremely welcoming to the refugee and immigrant population, here and there obviously you’ll run across misconceptions. And I think one of those typically is that we’re here to get something. I think it’s quite contrary. I think we’re here to really work hard, and also, we do bring many talents and gifts,” Park said.The talents of Hernandez have brought her into a world of culinary success. She says integrating into U.S. culture hasn’t always been easy, but she believes it’s best to keep a positive attitude.“Changes or bad things sometimes make you learn, and have a new beginning,” Hernandez said.It doesn’t matter where you come from. Hernandez says anyone can have a new beginning.“We are welcoming any culture… any kind of cuisine. Can be American, African, Bolivian, Venezuelan, whatever.” 2945
For the second time this week, markets were briefly halted trading as the market fell 7 percent, triggering a "circuit-breaker."The New York Stock Exchange halted trading less than 10 minutes after the market opened, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 7 percent. By the end of the day, the Dow set an all-time point drop, losing more than 2,300 points. The drop marked a nearly 10 percent fall for the Dow from yesterday's totals. Six of the largest eight one-day point drops have taken place in the last three weeks. Thursday's drop ranked fourth in the largest decine based on percentage, only trailing the market crashes of 1929 and 1987. In one month, the Dow has lost 28% of its value. Stock exchange rules require that trading be halted for 15 minutes in the event of a 7 percent loss. I.M. Pei, the Chinese born architect who was best known for designing the courtyard to the Louvre in Paris, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the Kennedy Library in Boston, has died at the age of 102, the New York Times confirmed. The cause of Pei's death has not been announced. Pei moved to the United States at age 22, and learned from renowned architects such as Le Corbusier. Pei's first professional design was built in Atlanta in 1949. It was a simple mixed-used facility, which was torn down in 2013. In 1964, Pei was picked by John F. Kennedy's family to design his presidential library. The library ended up taking nearly 15 years to complete. In the 1981, Pei's design of the Louvre's pyramid courtyard opened to the public. During his career, he won many awards, including being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H.W. Bush in 1992. Pei was preceded in death by his wife Eileen of 70 years. 946
Firefighters grappling with two major infernos across California have another nightmare to worry about: a new wildfire in Los Angeles.As the Kincade Fire and the Tick Fire continued to burn, the Getty Fire broke out Monday morning on the west side of the 405 Freeway in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.The area affected by the Getty Fire is known for its celebrities and high-value homes. From woodwork and sewing to basic assembly of kits, employees at the Mile High Workshop in Colorado are able to gain technical skills so they can transition into another job out in the community. The workshop serves as a stepping-stone for those facing barriers to work.“We do job training for folks who are coming out of prison, recovering from addiction, and rebuilding from homelessness,” Mile High Workshop Executive Director, Andy Magel, said. “And we do that by partnering with other businesses and doing contract work for them.”“In the last 5 years we’ve hired probably a few over 130 folks, and the vast majority of them have had experience with the criminal justice system,” Magel added.One of those is seamstress Antonette Smith."Something about this job makes you not even want to leave at the end of the day,” Smith said. Smith learned that even a misdemeanor conviction can alter someone's life.“Me and a family member got into a situation where the police were called. I was arrested and taken to the hospital. I woke up in the Denver city jail. I ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor II.”Smith says she only has a couple months left at the workshop and she’s nervous about what she’ll face when she applies for other jobs.“Where am I gonna be able to go and be accepted like here at Mile High. That’s one of my biggest fears,” Smith said.Attorney Jack Regenbogen with the Colorado Center on Law & Policy says one third of working-age adults have some sort of criminal history.That’s one reason why Ban the Box is gaining momentum across the country.“Ban the box is a national campaign to try to promote employment opportunities for people that have a criminal history,” Jack Regenbogen said.“Ban the Box” refers to the box commonly included on a job application that asks about somebody’s criminal history.“In many cases, this box is an automatic disqualifier. So many job applications are online today, and the second that somebody checks that box indicating a criminal history, it automatically ends their application. ‘Thank you for your time, you’re not qualified,'” Regenbogen said.Regenbogen says 35 states across the U.S. have enacted some sort of fair chance hiring policies. Most require public companies to take the box off the application, but some states have included private companies as well.“Each state that has passed ban the box has different nuances about who it applies to, and also, at what point in the hiring process a record can be considered,” Regenbogen said.Even though more states are taking initiative on Ban the Box, not every company agrees it’s a step forward. Professional Finance Company deals with debt collection. CEO Mike Shoop says the box is very necessary for his business. “It just helps us in our recruiting and hiring process to know upfront if somebody has committed a felony,” Shoop said.As of right now, Colorado state law requires that Professional Finance Company does not hire anyone who’s been convicted of a felony. That's because employees handle a lot of sensitive financial information.“We are a financial institution. We do handle financial transactions, and we do handle people’s personal identifiable information," Shoop said.If the box is taken away, Shoop says the company wouldn’t know somebody’s criminal history until the background check, which he claims would be a waste of time and resources for both parties, considering they wouldn’t legally be allowed to hire the person.Regenbogen says some states have considered that possibility and there are exceptions.“If the law says that they have to consider criminal history and cannot hire someone with a certain type of criminal history, then they can still ask on the application,” Regenbogen said.However, for a majority of businesses, that’s not the case. Regenbogen believes banning the box would improve society overall.“There are studies that show the number one predictor of whether someone is likely to reoffend and recommit a crime is whether they’re able to gain employment.”Those at Mile High Workshop certainly agree, which is why they’re trying to provide that second chance.“Nobody wants to be defined by the worst things they’ve done in their lives. We all have things we’re not proud of, and having the opportunity to grow from that and to learn and to prove that you are a capable person is a really powerful thing,” Magel said.“Everybody has a chance to change, and instead of you looking at my criminal background, get to know me. Get to see the kind of work I can provide.
