SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year's San Diego Pride festivities are going virtual, to comply with the Stay-at-home order brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the program online, others could not resist heading to Hillcrest for the annual celebration. No cars needed to be towed, and no streets needed to be blocked off Saturday. This year's San Diego Pride parade launched virtually in a quiet outdoor patio at Inside-Out restaurant in Hillcrest."Today's going to look a little different, but we're going to keep it as close to normal as possible," San Diego Pride Executive Director, Fernando Lopez, said.Organizers hoped to keep it "normal," despite trying times brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. But Pride is no stranger to the idea of "adapt and overcome.""Our parade has gone through a hurricane, our parade has gone through a bomb threat," San Diego Pride Philanthropy Director, Sarafina Scapicchio said. "We have had challenges to this event happening, and it is very important to keep our Pride traditions alive regardless of what's going on to the community."People who would normally be marching in Hillcrest submitted videos and logged on for live interviews. Others still made their way to University Avenue, to support local LGBTQ businesses and display their pride."Pride is feeling your true self and celebrating with your community," Lorraine Neville said while dining outdoors at Gossip Grill."It means one love," Cindy Lauritzen said, also at the restaurant.Cindy and Janine Lauritzen never miss a Pride. They say they want their love story to inspire the next generation."There was a day when we couldn't be married," Janine Lauritzen said. "Now we are and celebrating that, and getting the younger generations to see that it's OK to be who they are."They were one of the more than 160,000 people who tuned into the virtual parade from around the world.Organizers admit it was not perfect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Police tracked the man's phone to Sunset Cliffs where an SDPD lieutenant watched him drive off the cliff at a high rate of speed just after 5 a.m.RELATED: Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsPolice: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckWiese used a 100-foot long dog tether to rappel down the cliff to the truck, which had landed upside down in the water on top of a rock. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Scripps Ranch Civic Association offered a reward Monday to find the person who vandalized ball fields.The incident was reported over the weekend at Jerabek Park at 10150 Agenda Magnifica. Someone in what neighbors believe was a large truck drove in circles on the field, raising the turf.“This type of destruction of our field, we’ve seen it a couple of times before; it’s really got to stop,” said Steve Trifoglio, who plays ball at the field.The SRCA posted a ,000 reward on its Facebook page. A neighbor chipped in another 0.An update Monday indicated a landscape contractor was able to tamp down some of the raised turf. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Symphony has overcome the last major obstacle to a permanent home along San Diego's waterfront.The Port of San Diego's Board of Commissioners has granted a 15-year lease for the Symphony's Bayside Performance Park project. The project will see the construction of a seashell-shaped concert venue at Embarcadero Marina Park South, as well as various improvements to the surrounding park.The lease also includes four options allowing the Symphony to extend their lease up to 50 years.The San Diego Symphony will invest a minimum of million toward those improvements, including 66 new restrooms, expansion of the current promenade, and improvements to the park's existing basketball courts and exercise equipment.RELATED: Margaritaville Island Resort coming to San Diego“We’re confident concert-goers will love the improved access and state-of-the art stage and sound system, and bayfront visitors will love the new and improved park,” said Board Chairman Garry Bonelli.The Symphony could begin construction of the venue as soon as September. It wasn't immediately clear when the venue would open.A permanent concert venue for the symphony has been on the organization's wish list for years now. Since 2004, the Symphony has had to assemble and disassemble its temporary venue for its Bayside Summer Nights concert series.
