Federal regulators are setting up a new three-digit number to reach a suicide prevention hotline in order to make it easier to seek help and reduce the stigma associated with mental health.Once it's implemented, people will just need to dial 988, similar to calling 911 for emergencies or 311 for city services. Currently, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline uses a 10-digit number, 800-273-TALK (8255). Callers are routed to one of 163 crisis centers, where counselors answered 2.2 million calls last year.A law last year required the Federal Communications Commission to study assigning a three-digit number for suicide prevention. The FCC said in a report that there is overwhelming support for a three-digit number because it would be easier for distressed people to get help.Thursday's vote starts the months-long process to make that happen. The next step is a comment period before the FCC moves to an order. The government's action comes as suicide rates have increased across the U.S. over the past two decades, and dramatically so — by more than 30% — in half of U.S. states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 45,000 suicide deaths in 2016. The report noted that from 1999 to 2016, suicide increased in every state except Nevada. It also noted that suicide rates are higher with at-risk populations, including veterans and the LGBTQ community. The new, shorter number would likely lead to more calls, which in turn would mean more expenses for crisis centers already struggling to keep up. If the number of calls to the hotline doubled, centers would need an extra million a year to handle the increase, the FCC said, citing the federal agency that funds the hotline, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The FCC determined that it would be better to have a new number that's only for the hotline, rather than one that's currently used for other purposes, such as 911. Advocates say that having a dedicated number, along with a message that mental health is of equivalent importance as medical emergencies, could help reduce the stigma of calling the number. 2150
From the government to nonprofits and individuals, there are so many people helping older adults dealing with isolation and loneliness right now. However, the Radio Recliner may be one of the most unique projects out there. It's a pirate radio station run strictly by retirees.“There’s one guy who used the music to talk about his favorite snacks he had in World War II and how he was able to get those,” said Mitch Bennett, Chief Creative Officer of Luckie, the brand behind Radio Recliner. The show launched in April and only planned to go for about a month, but demand and response was so overwhelming that it's still going strong with no plans to end anytime soon.“The thing that touches me the most is we ask each DJ to give some advice to others how should they stay positive through these times,” said Bennett. “Try to look at the good things in your life and appreciate what you have and let’s listen to some gospel music,” said one DJ.People can sign up to be a resident DJ or you can call and record requests and make dedications. The number is 855-863-0050. 1081

Growing up, a glass of milk and a cup of juice were considered necessary for our health, but some doctors say that’s not the case. “Years ago, access to calories was not as easy for children,” said Dr. Robin Larabee with Rose Medical Center in Denver. “Having milk and juice was a good way to provide nutrients to children."Dr. Larabee says that notion has gone sour."In most industrialized countries, there’s a lot more access to healthful and varied foods that the calories of milk and juice are just not as important anymore," said Dr. Larabee. Dr. Larabee says milk is only necessary for kids under the age of 2. It's a great source of fat for brain development. As for kids over the age of 2, fat is not necessary and calcium and vitamin D can be found elsewhere.“Calcium and vitamin D can be found in other sources like multivitamins or vitamin D supplements and calcium can be found in other items as well," said Dr. Larabee. For some parents, alternative milks have become a staple, but is those even healthy for children?“Addition of soy milk is not going to change your dietary needs," said Dr. Larabee. As for juice, a 12 oz. glass can be equivalent to a can of soda.“In my mind, there is no rational for juice except for a nice treat," said Dr. Larabee. So, what’s doctor recommended these days?“Straight up water unfortunately is probably the healthiest choice." 1386
