CHULA VISTA (KGTV) - A Martina McBride song titled, "I'm gonna love you through it," is the inspiration for our 10News Leadership Award Winner. Part of the lyrics includes, "When you're weak, I'll be strong. And when you let go, I'll hold on." If you're familiar with the song, then you know it's about the battle against breast cancer, and it's the mantra for a small business in Chula Vista. On the surface, it may appear to be an ordinary beauty salon. But there is nothing ordinary about what's happening at Rico's on 3rd. Anna Maria "Snooky" Rico is the owner, stylist, and angelic spirit of Rico's. "Everything that happens in this room is free of charge," says a smiling Rico. Rico is showing off a private room in her Third Avenue salon. It's home to the Loving You Through It Foundation, where over 800 women have transformed from cancer patients to cancer fighters. "Giving and serving others is good medicine," adds Rico. "It's good medicine to help others."Rico's medicine is pure love and compassion. When the women are ready, faced with the loss of their hair because of chemotherapy, she offers to either cut their hair or shave their heads and then helps them pick out head covers, scarves, or custom wigs provided by the American Cancer Society. "We try to meet them at their point of need," says Rico. "What is it that you would like for us to do for you today?"And there are so many grateful clients that Rico has served. "She's uh, she's like a sister to me," says Delia Calara. Calara was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She was given a pamphlet about Rico's services at the hospital. It was just what she needed during a desperate, dark time in her life. "You know when people come through here, we're apprehensive, we're fearful," says Calara through tears. "And then, when we leave, we're just overwhelmed, and I tell her I love her, and thank you."Kathleen Kubik, another client, was just diagnosed with breast cancer in April. In an attempt to explain the battle she was about to undergo, Rico reminded Kubik how soldiers shave their heads before entering the military. "They shave their heads, their hair because it's a hindrance for battle. That's what sold me," says Kubik. "We see them at their crisis moment. I know what it's like to be in that type of crisis," adds Rico. Snooky Rico knows the battle well because she too has been in those very same trenches, battling breast cancer. Rico herself is a cancer survivor. "One thing I always encourage the ladies is to never look at yourself through other people's eyes, to remember who you are," adds Rico. "You have to remember that you're a mother, you're a daughter, you're a sister, you're an aunt. All that you are to those people remember who you are." 2752

(KGTV) - Police have arrested three people in the death of a man found slumped over the steering wheel of his still moving vehicle.Chula Vista Police arrested Britney Canal, 29, of Chula Vista, Cesar Alvarado, 39, of National City, and Michael Pedraza, 27, of San Diego, in the murder of 59-year-old Mario Serhan.Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the head just before 1 p.m. on April 11. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Some unusual notices are showing up on front doors in the South Bay, sparking confusion and worries.On the first Saturday in May came the first encounter. Off J Street, Tony heard a knock and saw a casually dressed man at his door from a company called Pacific Home Remodeling. "He was looking to inspect homes for estimates of remodeling costs," said Tony, who asked us not to use his real name.Tony is a renter and told the man he wasn't interested. "I had to continually repeat, 'I'm not interested' before he finally left. He came back a second time a few days later - and the same situation," said Tony.Once again, the man was asked to leave. A week later, Tony and his cousin found a flyer stuck on their front door. It read 'NOTICE' in big block letters, and included a name and cell number, along with 'We were here for inspection and we missed you. Please call to arrange a new inspection.' The company at the bottom of the paper: Pacific Home Remodeling. A confused Tony set it aside. "I thought maybe they meant to put this notice on another house," said Tony.Then on Tuesday, the man turned up again. Tony's cousin was the only on home and heard a banging at the door. He was just inside the door, when he saw the man with his hand on the knob outside."He uses me cousin's name and my name saying we authorized him to come inspect home and look around. That wasn't true. My cousin told him to leave, and 10 minutes later, he returns and says he just got approval from me. Problem for him was I was on the phone," said Tony. Despite the notice, neither of them had given approval for an inspection. Tony later posted the incident on Nextdoor. Neighbors reported finding the same notices on their doors. One claimed a salesperson tried to talk his way into home past a confused elderly woman. A spokesperson with the company said they're looking into Tony's claims, but defended the use of the notices as "marketing material." Tony doesn't buy it. "It's deceptive. Very official looking. They put these notices on doors and hope people don't communicate with one another, and gain access to the house. It's very concerning," said Tony.Tony attempted to file a police report with Chula Vista Police, but says he was told there wasn't evidence a crime was committed.According to the Contractors State License Board, the Los-Angeles based Pacific Home Remodeling has had several citations dating back to 2015 and was put on probation. The latest accusations include poor work and failure to obtain permits. Hearing dates set for later this month and June could determine what happens to the company's license. 2764

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Sheriff's deputies were led on a wild chase through the South Bay Saturday, ending with a violent crash and three people injured, including a deputy.San Diego Sheriff's deputies were called to a report of a suspect burglarizing a vehicle in the area of 13th St. and Donax Ave. in Imperial Beach just before 10 a.m. When they arrived, the man took off and led deputies on a vehicle pursuit into San Ysidro.During the pursuit, deputies say the suspect hit a female driver on Dairy Mart Rd. before continuing northbound on Interstate 5, onto side streets in Chula Vista, and back onto NB I-5. At times, the driver reached speeds of 100 mph, deputies say.The woman was not injured, SDSO said.The pursuit came to an end when the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a bridge at the top of the H St. offramp. A deputy involved in the pursuit crashed into another vehicle at the top of the offramp as well. Both the deputy and that driver were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.The crash was so intense, it rained vehicle wreckage on the freeway below and damaged a woman's windshield. Bridge railings and fencing were also damaged, SDSO said.The suspect fled on foot from the crash, heading down the H St. offramp and onto the shoulder of I-5 before deputies captured him. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries. 1393

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The man accused of fatally stabbing a man during a road-rage dispute in the South Bay is due in court for pre-trial motions Monday. Rickey Smith, 60, is accused of stabbing 36-year-old Horace Williams to death as Williams sat in his van. According to police, the incident happened on November 27, 2018 along Sweetwater Road. Witnesses told police Smith was following Williams’ van as the two yelled at each other. RELATED: Man accused of killing driver in South Bay road rage incident pleads not guiltySmith’s pickup then reportedly hit the van from behind before Smith pulled in front of the van, slamming on the brakes. Witnesses told police the maneuver caused the crash. Police say Smith then got out of his truck and stabbed Williams. Smith, a father of five who had just dropped several of his children off at school, died at the scene.
