The Stallion Springs, California Police Department is warning the public about a cell phone "spoofing" scam that's going around asking for personal information. The spoofing scam appears to look like a legitimate phone call as the caller ID is displayed as the victim's own cellphone number.A voice recording identifies the call is coming from AT&T, and advises the victim that their cellphone account has been compromised and they may be a victim of fraud. The voice recording then asks for the victim to confirm their personal information, specifically asking for the last four digits of their social security number.AT&T confirmed to Stallion Springs Police that this is a phone scam. Police advise that if you receive calls like this, to not answer them. If you do answer, do not give out your personal information. Hang up and call your phone company asking about the legitimacy of the scam or call police. Report spoofing at www.IC3.gov. 989

The summer of 2020 has been one marred by civil unrest in the U.S. Since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police on Memorial Day weekend, thousands of protests have taken place across the country calling for police reform and an end to systemic racism. While some of those protests have resulted in burned buildings and looted businesses, a non-profit group reports that the overwhelming majority of Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 have been peaceful.According to a report from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), there were nearly 8,000 demonstrations linked to the Black Lives Matter movement between May 26 and Aug. 22 — 93% of which were peaceful. The ACLED, which sources information via reports from the media, reports from government and non-government agencies as well as targeted social media reports, says that Black Lives Matter protests took place in more than 2,000 locations — including in all 50 states — between late May and August. Most places that saw protests that devolved into riots also saw several other peaceful demonstrations. The organization also notes that in places where riots were widespread, like Portland, that the vandalism was limited to the span of a few square blocks. The ACLED's findings contradict the findings of pollsters, who report that as many as 42% of Americans believe most Black Lives Matter activists are "trying to incite violence or destroy property." The ACLED believes that disparity comes from "biased media framing" stemming from "disproportionate coverage of violent demonstrations."And while BLM demonstrations have been largely peaceful, the ACLED reports that local governments have disproportionately responded with force. About 1 in 10 BLM protests were met with government intervention — a 6% increase when comparing government intervention in all other demonstrations. In half of those interventions, police used tear gas, rubber bullets, pepper spray or batons while attempting to force protesters to disperse. While not the case in every violent protest, the ACLED reports that some riots were instigated by "agents provocateurs," or outside infiltrators. For example, a man with an umbrella who committed early acts of vandalism in Minneapolis has since been linked to Hells Angels. The Black Lives Matter protests have also sparked a conversation about statues dedicated to Confederate leaders or those with colonialist or slave-owning pasts. The ACLED found 38 instances in which protesters toppled such statues, though local governments across the country have peacefully removed dozens of similar monuments on their own.The ACLED aggregates data from political conflicts around the world. According to the group's webpage, the non-profit organization receives some funding from the State Department. 2810

The Southeastern Conference has had to postpone or cancel three games this week because of positive COVID cases among several football programs."While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in a press release on Tuesday. "We must remain vigilant, within our programs and in our communities, to prevent the spread of the virus and to manage activities that contribute to these interruptions."The conference has postponed Saturday's game between No. 20 Auburn and Mississippi State because of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantining within the Bulldogs' program. In a press release, the conference had to reschedule the game between the Tigers and Bulldhad to Dec. 12.On Tuesday, the conference announced that No. 5 Texas A&M would not face Tennessee because of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantining within the Aggies' program. The Volunteers and Aggies game has been rescheduled to Dec. 12, the conference said.A&M had to pause in-person activities on Monday after a player and a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from South Carolina. The conference also had to postpone Saturday's LSU game against No. 1 Alabama due to an outbreak within the LSU program.LSU already has a game on Dec. 12 because they're facing No. 6 Florida Gators, which was pushed back from October due to a COVID outbreak within the Gators program.Because LSU has a game tentatively scheduled for Dec. 12, the opportunity to reschedule Alabama at LSU game will need to be evaluated," the SEC said. "The rescheduling of games on the remaining SEC football schedule may include Dec. 19 as a playing date."This isn't the first time LSU has faced an outbreak amongst the team.According to Lafayette Daily Advertiser, head coach Ed Orgeron said back in September that most of the team caught the virus over the summer. And Arkansas coach Sam Pittman will not coach when his team faces No. 6 Florida after he tested positive for COVID-19 twice, the AP reported. 2213

The video streaming service Netflix has been indicted by a grand jury in Texas over the film “Cuties,” alleging the company used “lewd” images."Cuties" is a French film that follows the story of an 11-year-old Senegalese immigrant in France who rebels against her family's Muslim traditions and joins a free-spirited dance crew. The film, directed by Ma?mouna Doucouré and originally called “Mignonnes”, won a directing award at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.A Tyler County, Texas grand jury moved to return an indictment against Netflix last month, according to multiple media reports. The complaint alleges Netflix knowingly promoted visual material which “depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or public area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”In response, Netflix stated “‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children,” according to a statement in Deadline. “This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”Netflix was reportedly served a summons October 1.Earlier this summer Netflix was forced to apologize for what they called “inappropriate art work” used to promote the movie on their service. The main image Netflix originally used shows the four lead actresses, all girls, wearing black and turquoise dance outfits revealing their stomachs and most of their legs, while posed mid-dance.The images used in France for the film show the girls walking down the street holding shopping bags. The film is recommended for 16+, according to Netflix. The image and description for the film have been updated in Netflix. The poster sparked outrage online, and with some comparing the poster to pedophilia. In the days following the release of the artwork, thousands had signed a Change.org petition calling for the film to be removed from Netflix. The film is now available on the service.Doucouré said the film is based in part on her own childhood experiences, and those of girls growing up today.“This is most of all an uncompromising portrait of an 11-year-old girl plunged in a world that imposes a series of dictates on her.” She said in an interview with Cineuropa. She continued that it is important to not judge these girls, but to understand them, listen to them and give them a voice. 2458

The US has reported more deaths from the coronavirus on Wednesday than in any other single day during the pandemic, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.According to Johns Hopkins’ figures, local health officials reported 3,157 deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, shattering the previous record of 2,607 set in April. The marker comes as CDC Director Robert Redfield warned on Wednesday that the US could see an additional 180,000 coronavirus-related deaths between today and the end of January — an average of at least 3,000 a day.Meanwhile, coronavirus hospitalizations in the US topped 100,000 on Wednesday according to the COVID Tracking Project, a mark that is well above the spring and summer surges of the coronavirus. Nearly 13% of all US hospital beds are being used by coronavirus patients, placing the nation’s health care system in a precarious situation.Despite population increases since the 1970s, the number of hospital beds in America has steadily declined, according to CDC figures.Wednesday's figures would likely not include infections that occurred during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend as coronavirus infections can take weeks to cause hospitalizations. Public health experts are fearful that despite some states implementing shutdowns of businesses, that holiday travel will cause an additional spike in coronavirus cases.According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has recorded at least 100,000 new COVID-19 cases each day since Nov. 3. 1472
