SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Challenger Middle School teacher Christopher Kelly is the SDCCU classroom hero. Kelly is a fresh face in the teaching world with only four years on the job, but is already making a tremendous impact in his students' lives. Kelly uses a mix of positive reinforcement and entertainment to keep his students engaged in their eighth-grade math class and eager to learn. "I do talk like a talk show host," Christopher Kelly said. "I think it's kinda fun, and I think it keeps them more engaged that way they pay attention more." Kelly became a teacher to create a positive and secure space for kids to learn and grow. "I think that everybody in this world that has been successful has had somebody help them along the way," Kelly said. "I just want to be able to help some people who maybe haven't had that yet." Kelly's attentiveness toward his students is one of the reasons eighth-grader Olivia Toledo wanted to recognize him for his hard work. "When I need help, I know that I can go to him, and he will help me until I get it," Toledo said." He keeps us engaged by telling us to just keep going and never give up." His students and staff say Kelly is a teacher who is making a difference in his students' lives. "When you get recognized in a big way like this, it feels really good; it makes you feel really special," Kelly said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Live Well San Diego is getting some new wheels.The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to purchase a vehicle that will take the services of the public wellness, safety and quality-of-life program directly to residents.The Live Well ``mobile office'' will offer disaster aid; community health services; housing assistance; and outreach to seniors, veterans and the homeless, according to planners.Supervisor Greg Cox called the rolling service a continuation of Live Well efforts that will allow the county to reach out to citizens more efficiently.The vehicle will make regular stops countywide, Health & Human Services Agency Director Nick Machionne told the board.``We don't anticipate any issues,'' Machionne said. ``The mobility will only improve our access.''The goal is to have the vehicle on the road this year, HHSA spokeswoman Sarah Sweeney said.The program will cost 0,000, which will come out of the fiscal 2019-20 budget. Kayla Denney has devoted her career to saving every dog’s life that she can, and for that she's being awarded the 2019 National ‘Unsung Hero" Award by Petco.She's brought the animal shelter in Taft, Texas, from almost a 100 percent kill rate all the way down to 0 percent. Since she took over last November, each dog that has passed through here has found a forever home.“As of November 1st, we have saved 565 dogs and cats out of Taft,” said Kayla Denney. Denney is flying out to San Diego, California, to accept her award on Monday, an honor she says she knew nothing about.“There are thousands of applicants, I didn't know I was nominated,” said Denney. “I became the 2019 unsung hero for the country so one person in the whole United States and it still just blows my mind that that's still a thing.”The award is for her lifesaving efforts that have made a difference in Taft.Out of thousands of nominees, Denney made the top 5 in February, and was awarded ,000.
