ESCONDIDO, CA (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, musical groups. both large and small, had to put their concert tours on hold. And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia. "Now, Ruth and Emilia as a unit, can flourish some new stuff that we haven't been able to do, but have been wanting to do for a while." 1754

(KGTV) — Growing up in foster care can be lonely enough and the holidays and the pandemic can make life feel even more isolating.Shatayja Beck knows that feeling all too well."I didn't know where I was going to go. I thought I was going to be there forever, and then finally somebody told me about SPA, and it just sounded like the best place, really I was like sign me up," said Beck.SPA is the San Pasqual Academy in Escondido. Roughly seventy kids live, study, play sports, and grow up on the sprawling campus."San Pasqual Academy is a first in the nation residential, educational setting for children in foster care, and it has been for ages 12 and up," said Kimberly Giardina, Director of Child Welfare Services for the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Shatayja's mom died suddenly when she was just eight years old. She was in and out of the Polinsky Childrens Center and foster homes before finding stability at SPA."SPA was the best thing for me because I was older and nobody really wanted to take me in, and I wasn't going back with my family," said Shatayja.Shatayja lived in the honor's house and played just about every sport offered. She graduated from SPA in 2017."When I was younger, I didn't even think I was really going to make it to college, I was like high school and, that's it," said Shatayja.Not only did she graduate high school, but she says she also had several college scholarship options. Currently, she's a student at Grossmont College. Her passion is photography and she works as a security guard."When I went to SPA, I felt like I could be myself, and I found out who I really was, how I wanted to dress. and how I wanted to be," said Shatayja.Perhaps, just as frightening as entering the foster system is leaving it."There is the experience of, 'good luck, you've turned 18.' The system is no longer responsible. We hope that you learn everything that you've needed to to make this transition successful," said Simone Hidds-Monroe.Hidds-Monroe knows that feeling all too well. She graduated from SPA in 2009. She and her three siblings entered foster care after their mom died. They stayed together, and all graduated from the academy."There is such a relief when you meet another former foster youth. It's like this unspoken connection that you really understand," said Hidds-Monroe, who is now the associate director of youth services for Just in Time for Foster Youth.The organization serves more than 800 youth a year, ages 18-26. The goal is to help them succeed once they age out of the foster care system. "The biggest thing for us is connections. We want our youth to know there is a community here to support them, for every goal and every opportunity they want to have, we're cheering for them," said Hidds-Monroe.Making those connections can be more challenging during the pandemic.The group recently held two holiday drive-thru events, where youth picked up gifts, food, school supplies, or home furnishings."We're really asking the community to step forward and help us bring the holiday joy and some gifts and love to our youth at this time," said Hidds-Monroe.Giardina says when the pandemic first hit, the county saw a decrease in people willing to become foster parents, but offering virtual training and education has made it easier for people to help."The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, and kids in foster care have already come from traumatic experiences and already have had a difficult time," said Giardina.Hidds-Monroe says she's dedicated to making sure the youth succeed."I'm an ally for my peers, and I am very passionate for my youth in foster care to make sure they have a positive experience. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — Six people were arrested Thursday one day after a fatal stabbing at an Escondido park.Police say they arrested six juveniles, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old, for homicide in connection with the death of 37-year-old Mauricio Renteria, of Escondido.Police say a group of roughly 20 people were involved in a fight at Grove Park shortly before 8:30 Wednesday night. Officers responded to find Renteria with multiple stab wounds and head trauma on the ground. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 55-year-old man died Monday afternoon following a crash in Fallbrook, according to California Highway Patrol.The agency said the crash happened on East Mission Road west of Red Mountain Dam Drive around 1:16 p.m.CHP said a 47-year-old woman driving a Mustang drifted to the left into oncoming traffic, striking a Toyota Tacoma driven by the 55-year-old man.The driver of the Tacoma was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Mustang was also taken to the hospital for major injuries, CHP said.Officers later determined that the driver of the Mustang was under the influence of a drug. She was arrested before being released into the care of Palomar Medical Center, CHP said.The crash is under investigation. 767

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — Escondido Police say they've arrested one person in connection with a fatal collision that left four people dead last month.Police obtained an arrest warrant for 28-year-old Ashley Rene Williams, of Escondido, on Thursday and took her into custody at her home. Williams has been charged with four counts of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.Williams is accused of being behind the wheel of a 2014 Mazda 3 that struck and killed four people at San Pasqual Valley Rd. at Oak Hill Dr. just before 8:30 p.m. on May 5, police said.Police say Williams' vehicle was traveling northbound when it hit the group, which included a 33-year-old man, 11-year-old boy, 50-year-old woman, and 10-year-old boy. Police told 10News the boys are brothers and the female victim was their grandmother. The man was believed to have been dating the children's mother, according to police. A GoFundMe campaign for funeral expenses is currently running to help the family.Williams was hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash and initially, police told 10News that alcohol or drugs were not believed to have been a factor.The California Department of Motor Vehicles says Williams was driving on a suspended license during the crash. Her driver’s license was suspended on Feb. 18, 2020, for driving with excessive blood alcohol, according to the DMV. The agency added that she was also involved in a non-alcohol related crash on Dec. 16, 2019. 1483
