FUZHOU, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has begun efforts to build the largest regional cooperation platform, covering a geographical area that produces around one-third of the country's GDP.As key to this effort, on Friday, the 6th Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Regional Cooperation and Development Forum opened in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province.The forum, scheduled to run from Aug. 27-31, is celebrated the theme of "deepening cooperation and seeking common development". It has attracted more than 10,000 participants, including officials, entrepreneurs and celebrities from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, as well as Taiwan.The forum, begun in 2004, seeks to stimulate the economy within the pan-Pearl River Delta region, which covers Hainan, Yunnan, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, as well as Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.This move would help enhance regional cooperation, encourage labor mobility and accelerate the relocation of industry from China's well-off coastal region to the comparatively underdeveloped western region, said Xu Shangwu, secretary general of the Organizing Committee of the forum.This would improve the comprehensive economic strength and global competitiveness of the entire region, he said.During the previous five PPRD forums, more than 14,000 cooperative projects have been agreed, with their total investments exceeding 1.8 trillion yuan (264.71 billion U.S. dollars), according to government statistics.The GDP of the nine provincial regions in the Chinese mainland totaled 10.5 trillion yuan last year, up 11.8 percent from one year earlier. ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Ankara on Thursday night for a three-day official visit to Turkey.Turkey is the last leg of Wen's four-nation tour, which has taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy. BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced Monday that it would provide an additional 200 million yuan (29.4 million U.S. dollars) of humanitarian aid to flood-hit Pakistan for disaster relief and reconstruction.The Chinese government had previously given 120 million yuan in humanitarian relief to its neighbor, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu confirmed the 200-million-yuan aid on Monday evening."Chinese government has decided to provide 200 million yuan of humanitarian aid to support Pakistan," she said in a statement.As Pakistan's "close neighbor and all-weather friend," China would continue to support Pakistan's disaster relief and reconstruction efforts, said Jiang.Pakistan is still facing severe challenges in relief and reconstruction, and needs additional aid from the international community, she said.
