MARTIN COUNTY, Florida — The Martin County Sheriff's Office said a 28-year-old man faces poaching charges after deputies said he was caught with two gopher tortoises at a state park.Deputies responded Sunday evening to Seabranch Preserve State Park and found the suspect, identified as Robert Lane, on the ground.The sheriff's office said Lane pulled two endangered tortoises from their hole and was on the ground searching for others.Lane was in possession of a male and a female gopher tortoise when deputies caught him.They said he admitted to deputies that he pulled both of the tortoises from their hole and was going to take them home where he had planned to eat them.Gopher tortoises are a threatened species and federally protected.The case was turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lane faces charges related to poaching on state property.Deputies said they found the hole where Lane pulled the tortoises from and returned both reptiles to the location.  1043

Experts say all of the ingredients are there for this election to be highly contested.“There are a lot of different reasons why the election may not be decided by the morning of November 4, and a lot of lawsuits may start to fly once that happens,” said Claire Finkelstein, law professor and director of the Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law at the University of Pennsylvania.With a record number of ballots coming in by mail, Finkelstein says the counting period will be lengthy.If a candidate declares victory on election night, but then more results come in, there could be calls for recounts, especially in states where the results are close. That could mean litigation over the counting procedures.Each states' elector will cast their vote on December 14. Then Congress meets on January 6 to count those votes and name the winner.If no candidate has a majority of the electoral votes, or if the counting period goes on and the election is still undecided, it is possible that the House of Representatives must decide.Finkelstein says that would be extraordinary and complicated.“It would likely be very contested as well, but one way or another by January 20, there needs to be a new president being sworn in,” said Finkelstein.The professor says this election is also entangled with the new Supreme Court justice.Like for Pennsylvania, which could now see a new decision on allowing mail-in ballots received up to three days after Election Day, the Supreme Court could also be involved in recounts, as happened in Florida in 2000. 1659

Microsoft and LinkedIn are working together to provide digital skills for 25 million people this year to get people back to work.The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it massive health, economic and unemployment crisis. It's a big job to get people a job, and Microsoft and LinkedIn are tackling it head-on.Naria Santa Lucia is Senior Director at Microsoft Philanthropies. She's helping to provide people with the skills they need to work in a digital economy."It's those individuals that are able to promote those skills that are in the best position now to receive a job and gain employment but also to recover faster in the aftermath of the COVID crisis," Santa Lucia said.To reach those 25 million people, Microsoft and LinkedIn have identified the skills employers are seeking now and in the future. Santa Lucia's job involves getting people the content they need, helping them obtain low-cost certifications and then making connections to employment."Once you have a skill, it's really important to signal and show you're learning to employers that are looking to hire," she said. "A really critical piece is making that move into finding a job."The program also teaches people how to work online, how to successfully communicate and how to work as the team. It's open to anybody.Microsoft and LinkedIn have identified 10 in-demand job fields: software developer, sales development rep, project manager, customer service specialist, digital marketer, IT support, network administrator, data analyst, financial analyst and graphic designer.
