Bonsall, Calif.,- Many horses and their owners are returning home to San Luis Rey Training Center, after the Lilac Fire devastated their homes. Chomping away at her breakfast is 6 year-old thoroughbred, Miss Napper Tandy.She is a sweet, race horse, who is also a survivor. “I smelled the smoke, and knew there could be trouble,” owner, Sam Nichols said, while recalling the troubling moments that changed their lives.Last December’s Lilac Fire burned 4,100 acres of North County, destroying 157 structures.One of them was their home— the stables at San Luis Rey Training Center in Bonsall.Miss Napper Tandy managed to get away from the flames, but found herself in a small pen with six other horses.In the chaos, she was badly injured.“She had been kicked pretty bad in the leg,” Nichols said.For a race horse, it was devastating. But thanks to donations and community support, she and dozens of her stable mates found a temporary home at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.“I rehabbed her here, I started working her here,” Nichols said.It worked. In her first race since the fire and her injury, Miss Napper Tandy took first.Adding to her title of “survivor,” she became a first-time “winner.”“It toughened her up, it made her more of a fighter. She’s always been a fighter, but she came through it pretty well,” Nichols said proudly.But five months after the devastation, temporary stables are now being opened up at San Luis Rey.Many riders and their horses are moving back.Miss Napper Tandy’s stay in Del Mar will soon come to a close.“It’s bittersweet going back. It’s been great for us and the horses. BALTIMORE, M.D. - Some voters may be riding in style when they cast their vote on Election Day, courtesy of local funeral homes who offering up their limousines."The focus is on the seniors but will still provide for those who call," said Dr. Henri P. Close II. "We know it's fancy and that's why we're doing it be the real issue is to get you out there to vote."Dr. Close owns Henri P. Close Funeral Service in Baltimore and is also the president of The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association."Funeral directors have always been the quiet ones in the background," said Dr. Close. "We were always the Underground Railroad. Our limousines and our cars were always used, even when you go back to Selma when you go back to Montgomery. The funeral directors always provided transportation because people didn’t have that mode of transportation. The funeral home always had that mode of transportation."Close said the goal of NFDMA is to offer free rides to 300,000 registered voters in Baltimore, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Kansas City."Some people are using their Mercedes," said Close. "Some people are using their sedans; some are using sprinters. Even though it might be huge it’s a limited number of people we're transporting at a time."According to the organization, the initiative has helped Baltimoreans get to the polls for 25 years, with ridership peaking on election days in 2008 and 2012.Talking with WMAR, Dr. Close emphasized that transportation is more crucial this year as people attempt to vote safely during the pandemic."There are fewer polling places," he said. "so there is a need for transportation. Now we're the above-ground railroad to get people to the polls, no matter where they stand on issues."Because of COVID-19, the vehicles will be sanitized before and after voters get in. Face masks are required for both drivers and passengers. Britain can unilaterally halt the formal process of leaving the European Union, the bloc's top court said Monday.The European Court of Justice sided with the advice of its top legal officer, who declared last week?that the UK has the power to withdraw its notification to leave the EU under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty without the agreement of other member states.The UK can withdraw its Article 50 notification before the withdrawal agreement negotiated by the UK and the EU comes into force, the ECJ said. British officials have authorized a COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, greenlighting the world’s first shot against the virus that’s backed by rigorous science and taking a major step toward eventually ending the pandemic. The go-ahead Wednesday for the vaccine developed by American drugmaker Pfizer and Germany’s BioNTech comes as the virus surges again in the United States and Europe, putting pressure on hospitals and morgues in some places and forcing new rounds of restrictions that have devastated economies. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency recommended the vaccine could be used after it reviewed the results of clinical trials that showed the vaccine was 95% effective overall — and that it also offered significant protection for older people.“Help is on its way,″ British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC. “We now have a vaccine. We’re the first country in the world to have one formally clinically authorized but, between now and then, we’ve got to hold on, we’ve got to hold our resolve.”Hancock later added that the country expects to receive the first shipment of 800,000 doses “within days″ and will begin distributing shots soon afterward.According to The Associated Press, England will first distribute the vaccine to people over the age of 80, people in long-term care facilities and health care workers.
