Seventeen days after voters went to the polls in Ohio's 12th congressional district, Republican Troy Balderson hung on by a 1,680-vote margin to win the seat over insurgent Democrat Danny O'Connor.The seat, previously held by Pat Tiberi, and before that current Ohio Gov. John Kasich, has been held by Republicans since 1983. The district has not seen a competitive race since then, as both Kasich and Tiberi typically won every two years by comfortable margins. But the district, which includes parts of Columbus' affluent northern suburbs, rapidly urbanizing Delaware County to Columbus' north, as well as several surrounding rural counties, became competitive after Tiberi announced his retirement. Polls leading up to the Aug. 7 battle showed a dead heat. On election night, Balderson held a nearly 1,500-vote advantage. O'Connor announced that he would wait on all absentee and provisional ballots to be counted before conceding. All of those votes have now been counted as of Friday. “I just called Troy Balderson to congratulate him on his victory in the 12th Congressional district special election," O'Connor said in a statement. So many people have expressed an interest in attending President Donald Trump’s rally Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that the governor said he’s asked the campaign to consider a larger, outdoor venue to accommodate them.Gov. Kevin Stitt said Monday after talking with Trump and Vice President Mike Pence that nearly one million people have requested tickets to the event. Some Trump supporters have already started waiting in line outside the 19,000-seat BOK Center in downtown Tulsa.“We’re excited we’re being recognized as one of the first states to safely and measurably reopen,” Stitt told reporters Monday. “I’m looking for a potential other venue that maybe we could move it outside. Airlines were no longer obligated as of last week to keep workers employed under the Payroll Support Program, passed by Congress during the spring.With stimulus talks stalled on Capitol Hill, unions representing the airline industry have been pushing Congress to take immediate action. And given the mixed messages coming from the White House, it is unclear if any assistance is coming their way.On Tuesday, President Donald Trump tweeted that he would no longer negotiate with House Democrats on economic stimulus, but backtracked later in the night saying he would accept a standalone bill to fund the Payroll Support Program.On Wednesday, more than a dozen unions representing workers in the airline industry signed a letter to Congressional leaders, urging them to approve a standalone bill to renew the Payroll Support Program.“There continues to be strong, broad, and bipartisan willingness to protect jobs and livelihoods in the airline industry by extending the successful Payroll Support Program (PSP), which was part of the CARES Act,” the unions wrote to Congress today. “Unfortunately, efforts to do so did not come to fruition before the program expired on Sept. 30. As a result, several U.S. airlines had no choice but to move forward with tens of thousands of furloughs last week, and many more job losses are expected across the industry in the weeks ahead if the PSP is not extended.”Congress squabblesFunding another round of stimulus has been a contentious topic on Capitol Hill since the summer as getting House and Senate leaders to agree with the White House has been an issue.
