JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — Hidden deep in the East County is a little-known winter wonderland. The centerpiece is a remarkable treehouse designed with a Christmas theme. It was built in 2013 in the yard of the Wellington family's Jamul yard for the Animal Planet television show "Treehouse Masters." The Wellington's daughter had heard of the show and suggested her parents apply. So she had to wait quite a few years to get her treehouse," Kathie Wellington told 10News.Originally, Kathie planned to use the home for her grandchildren and as a fun meeting spot for an organization dear to her heart: FORBS (Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas). Each year, FORBS chooses around a dozen San Diego families who are down on their luck and provide Christmas presents, each delivered on Christmas day by a Santa. The Wellington's and their daughter, Vikki, came up with the idea of using the treehouse as a fundraiser. One weekend each December, they open up the treehouse for family pictures. The fee includes professional photographs, a real bearded Santa, cookies, hot cocoa, and craft activities. Kevin McKay drove the school bus along gridlocked, dark roads as pockets of fire burned all around. Nearly two dozen elementary school children were on board with him.Smoke began to fill the bus, so McKay took off a shirt. He and two teachers on the bus tore it into pieces and doused them with water. The children held the damp pieces of cloth to their mouths and breathed through them.He had only been on the job, driving the bus for Ponderosa Elementary School in the northern California city of Paradise, for a few months. Now, McKay was ferrying the 22 stranded children to safety as the Camp Fire scorched everything in its path. It would take five harrowing hours for them to reach safety.The fire had broken out early on the morning of November 8, around 6:30 a.m., forcing many to evacuate Butte County.McKay, 41, grew concerned early on. He had seen wildfires before, he said. "But the fact that it was coming down in 1,000 places, it was unheard of," McKay told CNN in an interview Sunday in a park in Chico, a city southwest of Paradise.He saw flames approach the school in both directions.His son, mom and girlfriend had already evacuated to a hotel in Chico that morning. Kevin Spacey made the set of Netflix's "House of Cards" into a "toxic" work environment through a pattern of sexual harassment, eight people who currently work on the show or worked on it in the past tell CNN. One former employee told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him.The former production assistant, whose account has never previously been disclosed, told CNN that Spacey sexually assaulted him during one of the show's early seasons. All eight people, each of whom spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity for fear of professional repercussions for speaking out, described Spacey's behavior as "predatory," saying it included nonconsensual touching and crude comments and targeted production staffers who were typically young and male.The new accusations follow an explosive article published less than a week ago by BuzzFeed News, in which actor Anthony Rapp said Spacey made sexual advances toward him in 1985, when Rapp was 14 years old.On Monday, Spacey released an apology in response to Rapp's account. "I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago," Spacey said. "But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years." "It was a toxic environment for young men who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background actors."The other people who worked on "House of Cards" with whom CNN spoke all supported the idea that the set could be toxic for young men because of Spacey.A crew member who worked on the show for all six seasons said that Spacey routinely harassed and touched him."He would put his hands on me in weird ways," the crew member said. "He would come in and massage my shoulders from behind or put his hands around me or touch my stomach sometimes in weird ways that in normal everyday conversation would not be appropriate."This crew member said he did not "feel comfortable" telling Spacey to stop. "That's the worst part about this whole thing. (KGTV) - A new study by a UC San Diego Assistant Professor says there is more plastic pollution in the deepest parts of the ocean than previously thought.Assistant Professor Anela Choy spent the last three years studying water samples off the Monterey Bay coast and found the highest concentration of micro-plastics at levels 200-600 meters below the surface."It’s a great problem," Choy says. "Tt’s pervasive and we’re just starting to understand the sources."Choy worked with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to test water samples at varying depths. They also took readings of micro-plastics in the digestive systems of animals at different depths. She says the findings, published Thursday in Scientific Reports, show that ocean pollution is getting worse, no matter how far down you go."Our findings are really important to make us think about how we as humans impact an environment that feels so far away, the deep sea," says Choy.Micro-plastics come from everyday plastic items that end up in the ocean as garbage. Choy says the vast majority of the micro-plastic her team found is from single-use consumer products, like water bottles and plastic bags. She says that's a wake-up call that everyone needs to do more to reduce their use of these types of pollutants."We need to think more carefully about the products we buy, how they’re disposed of and how we can make a positive impact there," says Choy.She says all that micro-plastic is eaten by animals that live in the deep sea. It's also ingested by other animals that pass through the area. JOHNSON COUNTY, Kansas — Roughly 5,000 mail-in ballots will be tabulated in Johnson County Friday.The results from the mail-in ballots will be released beginning at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.The ballots could widen the margin between the two leading Republican primary candidates for governor: Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Gov. Jeff Colyer.When polls closed on Tuesday, slow reporting in Johnson County delayed results. Once the numbers came out the following morning, Kobach led by fewer than 200 votes.Since then, the numbers have been contested, but a 41 Action News county-by-county tally shows Kobach still in the lead.The Secretary of State’s office said it should have all the advance ballots that were mailed in, and any other unofficial election results that were not previously reported on election day.Provisional ballots will be reviewed and counted next week by individual counties. They must certify the results between Monday, Aug. 13 and Monday, Aug. 20.Colyer has asked Kobach to recuse himself from giving local election officials advice. 1081
