SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Chicano history will be celebrated in San Diego this week at one of the city's most historic parks. On April 20, the Logan Heights community will celebrate the 49th annual Chicano Park Day at the famed park underneath the Coronado Bridge. The free festival brings together community members annually for art, education, entertainment, and honoring Chicano culture and the park. This year theme will be "Danzantes, Protectors of Our Traditions and Chicano Park, 500 Years of Anti-Colonial Struggle."Performances are scheduled by a lineup of traditional and cultural dance groups and one of the largest Aztec Indigenous dance performances by Danza Azteca Calpulli Mexihca. In addition to dancing, kids art workshops, speakers, and more than 325 classic lowrider cars and bikes will be on display. Attendees can also visit various arts and crafts, and informational booths throughout the colorful park. And, of course, there's the food, which will be sprinkled throughout the park at various booths. The event comes a couple days before the official establishment of Chicano Park on April 22, 1970, by activists. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2016.The park is known for an array of colorful murals lining the Coronado Bay Bridge's legs that make up the Chicano Park Monumental Murals. Artists illustrate Chicano history and culture through murals and sculptures throughout the park. 1487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Busy families can get help from the United States Department of Agriculture, which has tips for stretching your food budget and eating well when money is limited.Buy in season: Sticking to fruits and vegetables that are in season can lower the cost and add to the freshness.Go back to basics: Convenience foods like pre-cut fruits and vegetables and take-out meals often cost more.Meal prep: Make a large batch of favorite recipes and freeze in individual containers. If you use them throughout the week, you can avoid spending on take-out meals.Find deals right under your nose: That may include peel-off coupons on items, signs on aisle shelves, or coupons with your receipt.Search for coupons: Don’t overlook your junk mail! Many stores still mail coupons and ads, or you can find them online.Look for savings in the newspaper: Brand-name coupons are found in paper inserts every Sunday. Some stores offer double value on coupons on some days of the week.Join your store’s loyalty program: You can receive savings and electronic coupons when you provide an email addressFind out if your store will match a competitor’s coupon: Many stores will accept coupons for the same item.Get a coupon buddy: Swap coupons you won’t use with a friend.Stay organized: Sort your coupons so they’re easy to find. The USDA has sample two-week menus, recipes and a shopping list that can be used by anyone wanting a healthy diet at a modest price. The USDA created recipes using basic kitchen equipment and made lunches designed to be packable so they can be taken to work or school. 1619

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a possible recall election as the nation's most populous state struggles to emerge from the coronavirus crisis.Organizers for "Recall Gavin 2020" say they have collected around 800,000 signatures so far. That's more than half of the nearly 1.5 million petition signatures needed to place the recall on the ballot. But state records show just under 500,000 have been turned in so far; of those, 46,756 are from San Diego County.Recall adviser Randy Economy says interest is higher since it was revealed Newsom dined with friends at an opulent restaurant while telling state residents to stay home and not socialize."He's done this to himself," Economy says, pointing out that many business owners are upset at how Newsom has handled the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing shutdowns."More people have suffered who are the heart and soul of California and the backbone of our economy, and we basically have had it."Economy says his group does not plan to hire professional signature gatherers. Instead, they're relying on a network of 30,000 volunteers across the state. They plan to use social media and their website to gain momentum."People have paying attention," he says, "They're at home, they don't have much to do, they're always on social media..."You can download the petition. You can sign it in your home. You can have your family member sign it. You can have your neighbor sign it. It's just just real simple."But a grassroots movement may not be enough. Newsom still has high approval ratings, and won his recent election by the largest margin in California history.UC San Diego Political Science Department Chair Thad Kousser says the 2003 recall of Gov. Gray Davis provides a good comparison. In that recall, the only successful recall of a governor in California history, supports got a huge financial boost from Darrell Issa and also had a big-name challenger in Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.Kousser says this recall effort has neither."Without the money that it takes to set in place the machinery of direct democracy in California, we're not going to see a recall come to fruition," he says.Newsom hasn't spoken publicly about the recall, but his office released a statement in June. It was identical to a statement he released in 2019 when facing a different recall election. In it, Newsom says the people behind the recall want to "bring Washington's broken government to California.""The last thing California needs is another wasteful special election, supported by those who demonize California's people and attack California's values," it says. When 10News presented that statement to Economy, he scoffed, adding "This man has the audacity to be able to lecture us on on politics and, and how he has been able to conduct himself behind closed doors. How dare he."Recall organizers have until mid-March to gather signatures. If they get enough, the recall election would happen sometime over the summer. The Associated Press contributed to this report 3037

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As we cast our ballots in this year's election, it's a good time to reflect on how our freedom to vote came at a cost. A member of the Greatest Generation looks back at how he and his fellow service members risked their lives to preserve that freedom and how his love for America began about 90 years ago.It started in North Carolina in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Forrest "Huff" Huffstetler, 96, says, "I remember how people suffered back then and I remember people lining up to get a bowl of soup."Despite the hardship, he remembers his life growing up on a farm fondly."We had our own pigs, fresh vegetables and we had cans. My mother and my grandmother would can all the food for us for the winter. We had it pretty good."It's that optimism that motivated Huff to make a decision that would change his life."I was delivering newspapers at 4 o'clock in the morning and that's when the post office had out a picture of Uncle Sam pointing a finger at you."The poster he saw encouraged people to enlist. He says his instant reaction was, "Man this is a good deal, I'd like to get in the Army."He was 15 and a half years old. He managed to enlist by convincing the notary public, who was also his aunt, that he was 18. He says it was well worth it. "I loved the Army. We had three meals a day, I had all my clothes given to me and I wanted nothing. It was wonderful."For more a month, Huff signed on to become a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. After two tours of duty came D-Day and that defining moment, the jump over Normandy. He remembers seeing the tens of thousands of service members around him."There were paratroopers everywhere and ships out in the channel, there in the channel as far as you could see."The first town Huff helped liberate was Sainte-Mere-Eglise, which explains the hero's welcome back he received last year on the 75th anniversary of D-Day. He looks back at the unity in their fight for freedom back then and says it makes him sad to see people divided today."It breaks my heart. All these men died fighting for this country," he says, "Freedom doesn't come for free, there's nothing for free."That's why Huff votes."I remember the first time I ever voted was when I came out of the service. I was 21 years old, and it was an honor for me to go vote," he says.He wants everyone to exercise that freedom and says he also thinks things will get better. "Things are going to change. We're going to get our country back together working together." After his service, Huff worked in the restaurant industry including owning a restaurant for 20 years. He eventually made a home in San Marcos. In December, Huff will turn 97 years old. 2717

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Attendance may have dipped at one of San Diego's biggest tourist destinations, but it may not be doom and gloom for the theme park.A new report from the Themed Entertainment Association shows Americans are heading out for fun at top parks around the U.S. The report says the country's top 20 parks saw a 2.3 percent increase overall in 2017.In San Diego, however, the draw to get people into parks wasn't nearly as positive.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego's new Electric Eel roller coaster opens to the publicSeaWorld San Diego had 3.1 million visitors in 2017, a 13.9 percent drop from 2016's attendance of 3.6 million. The park did report a 15 percent increase in attendance and 16 percent increase in revenue across all parks in the first quarter of 2018. The report stated: 815
