SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was an emotional day in a Southern California courtroom for the family of a murdered Army veteran.Nearly 20 people who were close to Julia Jacobson read victim-impact statements during the sentencing hearing for her killer, ex-husband Dalen Ware.Julia’s brother, Tony Jacobson, spoke exclusively with 10News reporter Jennifer Kastner. “It was kind of both a celebration to her as well as an understanding that this isn't just some random person. It really is someone that truly did touch her community, served her country and people really did love her very much. Unfortunately, [Ware] took her away from us all,” says Tony Jacobson of his own impact statement that he read in the courtroom.RELATED: Ex-husband of former Army veteran pleads guiltyWare will serve 15 years to life in prison, after pleading guilty to her murder. It was more than a year ago that the retired Army captain and her dog disappeared over Labor Day weekend.Her SUV was discovered abandoned near her home in University Heights. Ware was later arrested in Phoenix where he was living, and charged with her murder.Her remains were discovered in a shallow grave, in Riverside County. Even though Monday’s sentencing was painful, it still brought back a flood of positive memories for the Jacobson family, as they shared old stories.RELATED: Police searching for Julia Jacobson find remains“One of them that I remember so vividly just came rushing back to me. When she would laugh, she would snort a little bit which was makes it sound so embarrassing for her but it was one of her things that made her so personable,” adds Tony. What's next for the Jacobsons remains unclear.“I don’t know if there's really ever closure in something like this. The fact that Dalen has 15 years to life just tells me that in roughly 14 years we’ll have to revisit this again,” says Tony. 1896

The chain did not immediately release the source of the possible contamination but said the health risk is low.IKEA said the candy is a seasonal product and only 400 bags have been sold since it became available in February.If you bought the candy, you may return it to the nearest IKEA store for a full refund. 523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a young South Bay woman to COVID-19.In mid-September, Elvira Martinez became the first in her family to come down with COVID-19 symptoms. She tested positive and was hospitalized days later. Around the same time, her daughter Cassie, who lived with her mother at a home in Nestor, started feeling sick."Her first symptoms were a cough and then a fever in after that," said Cassie's boyfriend Ricardo Ferreyra.A week later, Ferreyra brought her to the ER."She couldn't hold down food, barely able to stand up," said Ferreyra.She was admitted and diagnosed with COVID-related myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Her brother David says in the next 24 hours, she would suffer two heart attacks. On Saturday, Cassie Martinez, who had no underlying conditions, died at the age of 29."I miss her so much. She had the beautiful personality of anyone I've ever known. She walked into a room, and it lit up," said David Martinez."I'm heartbroken, in a million pieces. She was so caring, put everybody else first," said Ferreyra.Ferreyra says it was love at first sight the day he met her at the insurance company they both worked at more than eight years ago."She captivated me and has done so ever since that day," said Ferreyra.He had decided to propose to her, possibly on their eight-year anniversary in mid-October."I wanted to take her out on a sailboat, spend some time together and propose in the middle of the ocean ... She is my soulmate, somebody I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We had so many plans," said Ferreyra.Family members aren't sure how they contracted the virus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just in time for the San Diego Zoo's reopening this month, a recent animal addition will be making his debut.A 2-month-old male pygmy hippopotamus, named Akobi, and his mother, Mabel, have been moved from the park's maternity habitat to the main pygmy hippo habitat in the Lost Forest area of the zoo.Akobi, born on April 9 and the first success pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in more than 30 years, stayed close to his mom once introduced to the habitat. But the zoo says he's already exploring the large pool, new terrain, and other animals in the shared habitat.RELATED: San Diego Zoo, Safari Park to reopen June 20"We’re excited to welcome guests back to the San Diego Zoo, so they can see this adorable calf who has brought his wildlife care team so much joy," said Leanne Klinski, wildlife care specialist for primates. The animals live in rivers and streams in the forests of West Africa. Less than 2,500 pygmy hippos now remain in Africa.
