BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- If education is the cornerstone for the nation's development, teachers are the cornerstone for education, said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in a speech during a visit to a high school in Beijing on Sept. 4 this year. The premier said , "I felt as if it was an artistic training class."     The class's topic of love guided the erudite leader to talk about aesthetics and the best-known Chinese aesthetician Zhu Guangqian. At the class, the premier made an improvisation on the issue of love. SHANGHAI, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Monday agreed to deepen their all-round cooperative partnership.     The agreement came at the end of a day-long foreign ministers' meeting in Shanghai, involving Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada and ROK Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Yu Myung Hwan. The three countries will build stronger strategic mutual trust, deepen and upgrade cooperation, carry out people-to-people exchanges and promote east Asia cooperation and regional peace and development, said a statement issued after the meeting. ANCHORAGE, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo on Saturday met with Alaska Governor Sean Parnell here before winding up his week-long official goodwill visit to the United States.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said he was glad to have Alaska as the final stop in his visit to the United States.     Apart from meeting with U.S. government and parliament officials, Wu said he also conducted comprehensive contacts with people from all walks of life in the U.S. during his stay.     The major topics included how to strengthen the Sino-U.S. cooperation, how to join hands to face challenges and how to realize common development of the two countries, Wu said. BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- China will continue to strengthen international judicial cooperation with other countries, including the United States, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Justice said.     The unnamed spokesperson made the statement while commenting on the case of two former Bank of China (BOC) managers in southern Guangdong Province, who were convicted in a U.S. court last year of embezzlement and money laundering, the Legal Daily reported Friday.     "China welcomed the verdict by the U.S. court," which sentenced Xu Chaofan and Xu Guojun, two former managers of the BOC Guangdong Kaiping Branch, and their wives, to prison terms of eight to 25 years, the spokesperson said.     Xu Chaofan was sentenced to 25 years in jail and Xu Guojun to 22 years. Their wives were each sentenced to eight years in prison. All four were further sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay 482 million U.S. dollars in restitution.     The four were found guilty of a racketeering conspiracy that began in 1991 and continued until October 2004.     Prosecutors said the defendants laundered stolen money through Hong Kong, Canada and the U.S., including 3 million U.S. dollars deposited at several Las Vegas casinos.     The case was one of the biggest of its kind since the founding of New China in 1949.     It has, however, reinforced the positive development of Sino-U.S. judicial cooperation and provided experience in dealing with organized economic crime.     "Fleeing suspects are doomed to be punished by law," said the spokesperson.     International judicial cooperation, an effective way of fighting crime, would contribute to the crackdown on trans-national crimes, he said.     Professor Huang Feng of the Beijing Normal University's Criminal Law Research Institute said Xu's sentencing in the U.S. provided "an alternative to extradition" as the two countries had not signed an extradition treaty.     Fleeing suspects could still be convicted abroad, though they currently could not be repatriated, Huang said.     Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in May the two guilty couples should be repatriated or extradited to China as soon as possible.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- One person is missing and more than a million residents affected as typhoon Koppu landed in southern China's Guangdong Province Tuesday, local authorities said.     About 1.06 million people in 69 townships in Jiangmen and Yangjiang cities were feeling the effect of the storm at 6 p.m., said Guangdong Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters. One person in Zhuhai City is missing.     In Shenzhen City, 169 flights were delayed on Tuesday, stranding nearly 10,000 passengers.     The typhoon, the 15th this year, has brought heavy rains to Guangdong.     In Yangjiang City, where the typhoon downgraded into a strong tropical storm, fallen trees and branches could be seen along the roads.     In Sanya City in the southern island province of Hainan, the typhoon brought rain of more than 167 millimeters.     Shipping services across the southern Qiongzhou Strait, which have been suspended since Monday afternoon, were expected to resume Wednesday.     Local experts have warned of flash flooding, with the possible dangers of mudslides and landslides.     Koppu would bring heavy rain to most parts of southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hainan and Guangdong during the next two days, China's central observatory said.
