NEW YORK, May 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks expanded gains on Friday ahead of the long Memorial Day weekend as surging commodity prices overcame disappointing economic data.European Central Bank Governing Council member George Provopoulos said that Greece might deal with its debt problem if it sticks to the aid program. That comment, which was considered as bullish by investors, drove the U.S. dollar weaker and led commodity prices surge on Friday.The stock market was driven by higher commodities prices, with thin trading volume ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, despite somewhat disappointing economic data on Friday.The Commerce Department said that both personal income and spending rose 0.4 percent in April, in line with market estimates. However, the rise in spending was the smallest in three months, suggesting the consumption situation was still weak.Meanwhile, pending home sales dropped 11.6 percent in April. The reading was a seven-month low. The market expectation was a drop of 1 percent.Moreover, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index came in above analysts' estimates. Concerns about higher gas prices and inflation had knocked the gauge down in March and April.Despite those disappointing data, analysts still held a bullish view toward the stock market. "Despite our near-term caution, we continue to see the S&P 500 reaching 1400 over the coming year," Alec Young, equity strategist of S&P Equity Research told Xinhua.According to Alex, while recent macro headwinds were raising questions about the sustainability of recent earnings momentum, he still believed that a downside trend of market was fairly limited and that the current weakness is more likely to be a correction, rather than the beginning of a new bear market."In our view, 2011 estimated EPS would have to be excessively optimistic to justify a bear market,"he added.The Dow Jones industrial average added 38.82 points, or 0.31 percent, to 12,441.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 was up 5.41 points, or 0.41 percent, to 1,331.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 13.94 points, or 0.50 percent, to 2,796.86.

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhuanet) --After one-year effort of developing, Microsoft is going to release its newest web browser Internet Explorer 9 at 9:00 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, according to media reports.The IE 9 will be the first major Web browser to include a do-not-track tool that helps people keep their online habits from being monitored, which makes Google Inc. and Apple Inc. the only big providers of browsers that haven't yet declared their support for a do-no-track system in their products.IE 9 can work on computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, but not compatible with Windows XP.This final release-to-Web version of IE 9 represents the ninth release since the first platform preview of the browser appeared at the MIX 10 Web developer event, said Ryan Gavin, the senior director of Internet Explorer business and marketing. VIENNA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Stress hormone is helpful in alleviating acrophobia, a morbid fear of great heights, according to a study by Austrian scientists.They published the findings in the recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.Frank H. Wilhelm, professor from the Department of Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy and Health Psychology at the University of Salzburg, Austria, carried out the first study demonstrating the clinical effectiveness of hormones released at periods of high stress in anxiety.The study found hormones and other drugs could be a good addition to behavioral treatment of several anxiety disorders.People with acrophobia have formed a so-called fear memory, which could be activated when the fear-causing stimulus occurs. They tend to react with feelings of extreme fear and anxiety to the ride in a glass elevator.Hence, scientists conducted a confrontation therapy, trying to mask this memory.A total of 40 experimental subjects had been put in a safe environment to constantly confront the fear-inducing stimulus, until they had a new reaction to the perceived threat.Observations also suggested hormones released in high stress had impact on learning and memory.Additionally, stress hormones were believed to facilitate the storage of new, anxiety-free competence and experienced confidence in the therapy. Animal studies have shown that this emotional relearning benefits from cortisol, one of the stress hormones.

BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhuanet) -- NASA scientists are testing its next-generation Mars rover, which will land on Mars next year, under extreme conditions at space-simulation chamber in California, media reports said Tuesday.Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., say they've installed the Curiosity rover in a space-simulation chamber that can mimic the environment the probe will encounter on Mars.  After the chamber's large door was sealed last week, air was pumped out to near-vacuum pressure, liquid nitrogen in the walls dropped the temperature to minus 130 degrees Celsius, and a bank of powerful lamps simulated the intensity of sunshine on Mars.After the test period, the rover along with other portions of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft including the cruise stage, descent stage and backshell -- part of protective covering -- will be shipped to the Kennedy Space Center for final preparation for the launch window from Nov. 25 to Dec. 18, 2011. Curiosity will study whether a selected area of Mars has offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life and for preserving evidence about whether Martian life has existed.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Zhou Yongkang Tuesday called on law enforcement personnel to take more preventive measures against crime and accidents during the Lunar New Year holiday.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited community security personnel, a district court, and police patrolling downtown Beijing Tuesday.He also visited a police station that is responsible for keeping public order in the area surrounding the central leadership compound of Zhongnanhai.During his visits, Zhou, who also heads the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, said China was seeing the travel peak for the Spring Festival and some regions were suffering icy weather and lingering drought.He asked the police to take effective measures in traffic control and fire-fighting work, and maintain social order during the holiday season.He commended the practice of deploying special police to patrol the surrounding areas of the Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, saying it could deter crime and enable quick responses to emergencies.During his visit to the district court, Zhou warned there were still "many social conflicts."He asked local courts to solve social conflicts more effectively, promote innovative social management and law enforcement in a just and clean manner.The Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar New Year, is the most important festival for Chinese.
