NANNING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a fire ban Saturday ahead of the upcoming Tomb-sweeping Day, in a bid to prevent forest fires against the backdrop of a prolonged drought.According to the ban, tomb-goers are forbidden to burn paper money or incenses and to set off fireworks in forest zones from April 3 to 17.They are also banned from burning straws, leaves, charcoal and others in forest zones.Violators will be fined or even detained and prosecuted, according to the ban.As of Wednesday, the drought, which began in southwestern China last year, has left 19.4 million people with water shortages and affected 6.48 million hectares of farmland in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi and Chongqing, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. It is a tradition for Chinese to visit family graves during the Qingming or Tomb-sweeping Day, which falls on April 5 this year. TASHKENT, April 24 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to consolidate cooperation with all the other member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on safeguarding regional security and promoting collective prosperity, Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu said here Friday.Meng, also a Chinese State Councilor, made the remarks at the fifth session of the SCO Security Council Secretaries, which drew interior and public security ministers of SCO member states to prepare for a June summit of the organization in Tashkent. The SCO, a regional security organization founded in 2001, consists of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.Meng said that against the backdrop of complicated global and regional situations, it is important for SCO countries to deepen practical cooperation and safeguard regional stability by further coordinating cooperative mechanisms within the SCO framework. It was also important to seek collaboration and utilize various resources, he said.Meng noted the lingering effects triggered by the global financial crisis on economy and society, as well as the continuing threats from terrorism, extremism and separatism on regional security. He said that SCO members all face the heavy tasks of maintaining national security and social stability. The SCO interior and public security ministers also exchanged views on issues including the fight against Internet terrorism, illegal arms dealing, drug trafficking and protection of gas and oil pipelines.

TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. The peoples of the two countries should promote mutual understanding, trust and cooperation between them, Wen said in an interview with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK."Japan's pacifist constitution adopted after World War II stipulates that Japan should follow the road of peaceful development, which has brought tangible benefits to Japan in terms of rapid economic growth and greatly improved standards of living for the Japanese people," Wen said.Speaking of China's tremendous social and economic progress since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy more than 30 year ago, he said China will stick to the path of peaceful and harmonious development."Both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. Therefore, both the Chinese and Japanese peoples should understand and trust each other and cooperate with each other," he said. The reason why China attaches so much importance to taking history as a mirror and looking into the future is by no means intended to perpetuate hatred, but to promote the feelings and friendship between the two peoples and to prevent a repeat of the past tragedy, Wen said.He called on the leaders, news media and the academic circles of both countries to play their part in facilitating the exchange of thoughts and the friendship between the two peoples and promote their mutual understanding.
