PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets.The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. "The Greek shipowners will come to visit the Chinese naval fleet and express their gratitude to the help from the Chinese navy," he said.During the five-day visit, the Chinese naval officers and soldiers will visit a Greek navy base as well as the Acropolis and other archeological sites in Athens.China's fifth naval escort flotilla with more than 800 officers and soldiers has successfully escorted 588 Chinese and foreign vessels in 41 batches since it arrived in the pirate-infested waters in early March this year.

DUNHUA, Jilin, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- When a flash flood struck their village ten days ago, 55-year-old Fu Bailin and his relatives had no time to take any belongings as they fled, except for a bill of debt."All our belongings have been swept away. My 100-square-meter house was flattened. My 2.5-hectares of cropland was destroyed," said Fu, a soybean and corn farmer at the Yaodianzi Village in Dunhua City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in northeast China's Jilin Province.All the houses of the 286 families in the village were destroyed. Fu's family, including Fu, his 70-year-old father, his wife and son, along with their fellow villagers, now live in temporary tents in the local forest police headquarters in Dunhua. BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Sunday started their third round of talks in Beijing to pave the way for a long-awaited pact to boost cross-Strait economic ties.During the talks, the two sides will discuss the main content of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), and goods and services trade in the "early harvest program."The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The first round of talks took place in January in Beijing, and the second two months later in Taipei.Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference Saturday that negotiations had made pronounced progress and were approaching completion.Yang Yi, another spokesman of the same organization, was reported as saying in March that the two sides should work together to complete the pact in June.Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said on April 2 the SEF also hoped to see the signing of the ECFA by the end of June.

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Monday opened its bimonthly session with a series of draft laws and amendments, including the amendment to the Criminal Law and a draft law on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protection.The session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) continued to deliberate draft amendments to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces, the draft People's Mediation Law, as well as the draft Law on the Application of Laws to Civil Relationships Involving Foreign Interests.Lawmakers also deliberated for the first time draft amendments to the the Law on Deputies to the People's Congress, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft Law on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the draft revision of the Water and Soil Conservation Law.The amendment to Criminal Law proposes reducing the number of crimes subject to death penalty from 68 to 55. It also gives a definition of "organization in the nature of a criminal syndicate" and lists tougher punishments for crimes by such organizations.Drink driving, intentionally defaulting on payment to employees and illegal human organ trade are to be listed as crimes in the Criminal Law, according to the amendment.The draft law on ICH protection includes a definition of ICH, mechanisms for ICH surveys, regulation of the inheritance of ICH, and penalties for its destruction.Lawmakers on Monday also heard a report on the NPC Standing Committee's research results on issues for the formulation of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).
