SHANGHAI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- The world's widest tunnel with an inner diameter of 13.7 meters completed its excavation here under the Yangtze River on Friday.     The 8.9-km tunnel is part of a 12.6 billion yuan (1.84 billion U.S. dollars) bridge and tunnel project to link Shanghai with Chongming Island, the country's third largest after Taiwan and Hainan.     The tunnel will accommodate a six-lane expressway and a rail line. When operational in 2010, travel to Chongming from urban Shanghai will take 20 minutes, according to Yu Xuanping, vice general manager of the Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co., Ltd, builder of the tunnel.     The company used a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 15.43 meters, the largest of its kind, to excavate under the Yangtze.     The tunnel and bridge project would make the transport networkson the southern and northern sides of the river more closely connected, said Wu Liangyong, a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician.     The tunnel connects Shanghai's vast Pudong District with Changxing Island in the Yangtze, while the bridge connects Changxing and Chongming.     Currently, Chongming is connected with Jiangsu Province to its north.     Located at the Yangtze River mouth, Chongming covers an area of1,200 sq. km, equal to about 20 percent of Shanghai's total land area.     China's central government plans to turn the island into a model of an eco-friendly town in the country. Shanghai municipal government is also paying great attention, with infrastructure projects being built within the island.     Experts said the inconvenient traffic between Shanghai and Chongming once blocked the development of the island. The construction of the bridge and tunnel would help attract overseas investment and make the suburb a major channel of the Yangtze River Delta area.

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for establishing a fair, open, reasonable multilateral trade system of non-discrimination in the world on Tuesday.     "We oppose protectionism in investment and trade," he said during a meeting with visiting British Finance Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, who is attending the first China-UK economic and financial dialogue.     Wen vowed to work with Britain and other countries to push the Doha round toward a comprehensive and balanced result. SANAA, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday that China and Yemen share a big potential and many favorable conditions for expanding the scale of investment and cooperation.     Xi made the remarks in a speech at the opening ceremony of the China-Yemen Bilateral Investment Seminar, which attracted some 300 Chinese and Yemeni officials and entrepreneurs, including Yemeni Prime Minister Ali Muhammad al-Mujawar.     Xi said it is the natural requisite of economic development for the two countries to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and create common prosperity.     Noting that Yemen has geographical advantages and rich reserves of natural resources, he expressed the hope that companies of the two countries could proceed from traditional friendship to mutual understanding and cooperation.     Xi said the companies of the two countries should stick to mutually beneficial and win-win practices so as to promote common development. CHENGDU, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday the efforts to search survivors were continuing in the quake-hit areas, but the focus of work would be gradually shifted to the resettlement of residents and post-quake reconstruction.     Wen told Chinese and foreign reporters at a resettlement site in Yingxiu town, a worst-hit area in the May 12 quake, that the biggest difficulty in resettling the quake-affected residents was the lack of tents.     A total of 15 million rooms were damaged or destroyed in the quake and a large number of people are in need of shelter, said the premier, who is paying a second visit to the quake-hit Sichuan Province.     "We have collected the tents nationwide and got aid from international community, but tents are still lacking," Wen said.     The Chinese government has ordered domestic tent manufacturers to produce and transport 30,000 tents to the quake zone each day and 900,000 within a month, Wen said.     The production of movable plank houses should also be accelerated to ensure the quake-affected people resume a normal life within three months, Wen added.     Efforts should also be made to ensure no big epidemic after the disaster, the premier said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R Front) speaks during an interview with journalists from at home and abroad, in Yingxiu Town of Wenchuan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, May 24, 2008, during his second inspection tour of quake-hit areas in Sichuan after May 12 when the 8.0-magnitude quake happened.     Enough epidemic prevention staff and medicine supply should be ensured, he said.     Wen said another problem confronting quake-relief workers is that the chances of secondary disasters still exist. A 75-billion-yuan (about 10.7 billion U.S. dollars) post-quake reconstruction fund had been set up and more money would be added to it in the next two years, he added.     Before the reporters, Wen expressed sincere thanks to the Chinese worldwide, including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as the leaders, governments and people of other countries for their concern, sympathy, aid and help.     "Facing such a powerful quake, we welcome international reporters to the quake zone," Wen said. PYONGYANG, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made a five-point proposal to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the proposal while meeting with Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly.     Firstly, Xi proposed maintaining the trend of mutual exchange of visits by high ranking officials, and strengthening political communication and close relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the Worker's Party of Korea.     China will continue to exchange views on governance and party construction with the DPRK, maintaining communication on important issues, he said.
