1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment last week, according to weekly statistics from the Department of Labor. That's a slight uptick — about 20,000 additional claims — from the previous week's figures. Last week's report also indicated a slight increase in unemployment claims, the first increase in several months.Thursday's report marks the 19th straight week in which more than a million Americans have filed claims for unemployment. During that time, more than 51 million people have sought unemployment insurance. While figures are down significantly since a peak of about 6 million claims in March, they remain historically high. The report also comes as increased federal unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire. Negotiations are underway on Capitol Hill for another round fo COVID-19 stimulus, but Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on negotiations. In passing the HEROES Act, House Democrats proposed extending those increased benefits, totaling about 0 a week, through the end of the year and extending them to gig workers and self-employed people. However, Republicans said this week they'd like to reduce unemployment benefits to 0 a week for just the next couple of months — a proposal that leaves some deficit hawks in the party uncomfortable. While Democrats say increased benefits will offer assistance to those too sick to work and to those who cannot work if schools are closed due to the pandemic, Republicans argue that the 0 benefits discourage people from working. The report also comes as a surge of cases in the Sun Belt appears to be tapering off, but experts warn that the surge could move north to the Midwest in the weeks and days ahead. 1737

(KGTV) One of the biggest city-owned office spaces sits vacant and may do so for a little while longer. The City of San Diego acquired the 19-story tower at 101 Ash St. in the beginning of last year in effort to consolidate staff into a new space, but various delays have kept the renovation from being completed.Officials signed a lease-to-own contract for the old Sempra Energy building and have been paying more 5,000 a month plus operational costs since January of 2017.The city was supposed to move in July 2017 and the estimated daily cost for the vacant structure is a little less than ,000.“I do believe the city has bungled this decision from the beginning starting with the purchase,” said San Diego City Councilmember Barbara Bry.Bry was elected to council after officials voted to acquire the building for million and says the issue can be traced to how city staff briefed council just before the purchase.“At the time city staff told the council that the building was in excellent shape and the million in tenant improvements was enough,” added Bry.Records indicate the city has paid more than million in rent and roughly million in operating costs since taking over the property.Bry is working behind the scenes to mitigate the matter before the costs balloon any more, but estimates it will be at least six months until staff can move into the 101 Ash Street building. The City of San Diego says more than 1,100 employees will work there when the renovation is complete and they plan to move into the building sometime in fiscal year 2019 — which begins in July. 1617

(KGTV) - Our typical May grey is finally here, but the month was anything but normal.Night and morning clouds were traded for long stretches of cloudy skies and multiple wintry storms.May saw rain every weekend, with 15 days out of the month getting a trace of rain or more.San Diego is wrapping up the month with eight-tenths of an inch, but other places like Ramona, Carlsbad and Campo picked up more than an inch of rain.RELATED: Check 10News Pinpoint WeatherLate season snow fell in Mount Laguna on May 23. The last years San Diego mountains saw snow in May were 2015, 1972, and 1998. The latest-ever San Diego snow was back in June 4, 1999, with half an inch of snow at Palomar Mountain. The cold we’ve seen in May doesn’t mean the summer will be chilly too. Pn the contrary, a weak El Nino weather pattern will stay dry, and potentially above-normal temperatures.Consider getting an early start on fire safety, our green fields could turn into fuel for fires. Thinking ahead and having a plan is the best way to stay weather ready, no matter the season. RELATED: How to prepare defensible space around your homeThe rest of the nation has also seen extreme patterns including severe weather and tornadoes being reported almost every single day this month. The U.S. has already seen close to the double the normal number of tornadoes for the month of May with destruction almost coast to coast. 1405
