"Lemonade stand! Snack bar!" they shout loudly. At the corner of Peabody Drive and Hardy Cash Drive in Hampton, Virginia you'll find a group of determined kids."We are raising money for single mothers that are struggling. They have to do so much on their own," said 11-year-old Cartier Carey.Cartier is the leader of the "Carti Pack" and CEO of his lemonade stand, one unlike any other."We sell lemonade, chips, candy - all types of stuff that people want, and it's not expensive," he said. Each dollar spent towards a cup of the summertime drink and goodies on the side goes towards buying diapers for local families in need."The diapers are for mothers or anyone that has babies," Cartier said. It's an unusual business model, but one that's working."There's a shortage of Pampers and wipes in the stores because of the pandemic, so this couldn't have come at a better time," said Anthony Carey, Cartier's dad.A rising sixth-grader like Cartier and his friends could be out playing sports or riding bikes, but instead, they're helping single mothers in the community."There are a lot of grown-ups out there not doing what we're doing," Cartier said."As a parent, it makes me feel spectacular," Anthony said. This lemonade stand isn't a first for Cartier. He started the non-profit Kids 4 Change 757 about a year ago."Not only are they helping older adults, but [they're also] helping children see they can make a change inside of their community," Anthony said.So far this week, Cartier and his friends have raised ,200, most of which is going to buy the diapers."I'm shocked," Cartier said.Cartier and his friends will be out in Hampton at the corner of Peabody Drive and Hardy Cash Drive through Friday.WTKR's Chelsea Donovan first reported this story. 1763

Willie Mays once said that no one could hit a baseball further than Willie McCovey. That is high praise from the former MLB Home Run King. On Wednesday, McCovey died peacefully at his home at the age of 80, the San Francisco Giants announced. McCovey was the 11th player in MLB history to join the 500 Home Run Club, and the second member of the Giants to join the club following Mays. McCovey hit 521 home runs in his 21-year career, which ended in 1980. In 1986, McCovey was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame after being selected on his first ballot. "Baseball has lost a giant, in every sense of the word, with Willie McCovey's passing this afternoon," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a statement. "There wasn't a batter more feared by opposing pitchers than Willie Mac, who hit 521 mammoth home runs during a dominating 22-year career that included 19 seasons in a Giants uniform." 945

(KGTV) -- A project that would create thousands of homes in San Diego County is heading to the ballot on March 3. If approved, Measure B, also known as Newland Sierra, would affirm the San Diego County Board of Supervisors’ unanimous approval of the changes to the general plan. The project includes 2,135 homes, 60 percent of which would be affordable for working families, according to Kenneth Moore, a spokesperson for the Yes on B campaign. The project would be built just off I-15 next to the cities of Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista. Newland Sierra also preserves more than 60 percent of the property as permanent open space. RELATED: Newland Sierra promises to prioritize first-responders for new homesCurrently, the general plan includes only 99 homes and designates as much as two million square feet of commercial property. If voters do pass Measure B, the permitting process will take 18 to 24 months, according to Moore. It would take another six to seven years to construct the entire project. Moore says construction on the infrastructure could begin as early as late 2021 or 2022. New homes would then start being sold and under construction by 2024. If the measure doesn’t get approved, however, Moore says that’s it for Newland Sierra. “Somebody could then move forward with the development of the current general plan zoning that allows a massive commercial development and estate homes," Moore says. RELATED: Developer pushes to rally support for vote on large North County housing development “Voting Yes on Measure B would create affordably priced homes for working families with open space, parks and trails - a better choice than the current General Plan that permits a two million square foot mega-commercial development, mansions and parking lots,” said Moore. Still, those in opposition say the project would create wildfire dangers, noise pollution, and traffic congestion. Much of the opposition is also being led by the neighboring Golden Door resort. "The developer stands to make more than a billion dollars, and the vast majority of homes will require a six-figure salary to afford," said a spokesperson in a statement to 10News. 2179

"The Great British Bake Off" judge Prue Leith took some heat after she revealed what went on in the kitchen.Leith accidentally announced the winner in a tweet hours before the finale aired on Tuesday. The tweet was hastily deleted and Leith tweeted an apology for the spoiler, explaining she was in a different time zone when she sent it out."I am so sorry to the fans of the show for my mistake this morning," her tweet read. "I am in a different time zone and mortified by my error #GBBO."But the incident had already left a bad taste in some viewers' mouths, especially coming on the heels of the furor over judge Mary Berry leaving and being replaced by Leith. The amateur baking competition is a cultural phenomenon both in the UK and abroad.Last year it was announced that the series was leaving the BBC for a new home on Channel 4.Soon after, hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc and judge Berry announced they would be departing the show. The gaffe by Leith apparently didn't stop viewers from tuning in, however.According to The Guardian,"The programme attracted an overnight audience of 7.7 million, a 34.6% share of the audience and well above the average for the series before the final of 6 million."For those who missed Leith's tweet and were wondering, contestant Sophie Faldo won. 1303

You might know the word "ghosting" in regards to dating. It’s usually when someone you’re talking to just disappears and stops communicating. Well, now it's happening during the job process, and people who do it may be paying a price they don't realize. In this hot of a job market, people are ghosting each other left and right. Karen Policastro with recruiting firm Robert Half says potential employers are not showing up for interviews, phone calls or work.Former hiring manager Craig Commings says he’s gotten used to new hires not showing up for the job."It was probably one-third of the time they showed up and two-thirds of the time they didn't," Commings says.A recent survey by Robert Half says 28 percent of people backed out of a job offer. They said it was because they received a better offer from another company.Ghosting is happening more to employers during the hiring process. Policastro says it may seem easier to avoid an awkward situation, but honesty is the best policy.Policastro says, at minimum, send an email updating them on your status. Then tell them, "thank you for the offer, but I have to turn it down."Experts suggest leveraging the better job."You never know when they may come back and say, 'I understand that you have a job offer, let’s see if we can up the ante,' " Policastro says.Job seeker Evan Piedrahita has the right idea, too. "If I got a better offer I would probably email them, let them know and give them a chance trying to increase the salary, benefits and see if they can match that," Piedrahita says. But ghosting works both ways. Job seeker Joshua Curry thought he made a good impression during an interview. But the potential employer never called him back."If I follow-up with an email, I usually get a response. But if I'm calling, not really," Curry says. "It seems to be a little bit more challenging face to face."No matter which side you stand on, treat others the way you want to be treated."This market will turn one day and you don't want to burn any bridges because maybe it’s an employer you want to go back to down the line and they will remember you,” Policastro says. 2143
