CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The forward rate of spread has been stopped after a fire sparked near a canyon in Chula Vista Thursday evening. The fire started around 5 p.m. in a canyon on the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive. It is in a residential area near the San Miguel Mountain Trailhead.Video from the scene showed white smoke billowing from the canyon. (CNS) - Authorities Thursday announced a ,000 reward for information in connection with the January stabbing death of a teenage boy during a fight in Chula Vista.Devin Griffiths, 15, was at a birthday party in the 900 block of Maria Way when a fight between two other teens broke out around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 31, according to Chula Vista police.At one point during the fight, Griffiths -- who was not initially involved in the argument -- jumped in to help a friend who was being attacked by several young men, police said. My heart is crushed."Griffiths added, "When I saw my son the hospital, both of his hands and knuckles were broken open, which tells me he fought these guys. And I'm very proud of him and angry with him at the same time."Police have been trying to interview witnesses and other attendees at the party. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he broke into a Chula Vista woman's home and took a shower.At around 4:30 a.m., a resident called 911 to report a stranger in her home using her shower, prompting her to flee. She said the man she did not know somehow entered her home as she slept.When officers arrived at the home on Orange Avenue, they called on the man to come out of the house, but he refused to leave and locked himself inside the bathroom.After about an hour, officers entered the house through a window and were able to take the man into custody.The unidentified man was taken to jail, but there is no immediate word on what charges he faces. 715

(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District Board voted Wednesday to cut more than 220 educators and place its beleaguered superintendent on paid leave.Staff cuts include educators and all librarians. In all, the board voted to eliminate 223 employees in hopes of balancing its budget.The board cited a decline in enrollment for the cuts, but said if enrollment goes up, librarians would be the first to return.RELATED: Sweetwater Union High School District votes to cut over 200 jobsThe vote ratifies an earlier referendum in which the board voted to lay off nearly 240 employees and staff members in February. The district's planned cuts to jobs and programs had been widely panned by staff and the public, with many calling on officials to consider salary cuts instead. During February's board meeting, one teacher told the board that their proposal would "kill this community and hurt our kids."Several staff were supposed have received pink slips in March but the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing campus shutdowns temporarily staved off layoffs.The board also voted 4-1 Wednesday night to place SUHSD superintendent Dr. Karen Janney on paid administrative leave. She earned her doctorate degree in education from San Diego State University in 2010, according to her professional online profile.
