A trip to Detroit has landed a Texas couple in hot water with the law. The couple, John Guerrero and Virginia Yearnd, traveled to Detroit to attend a concert. They are facing charges child endangerment charges for allegedly leaving their 11-year-old daughter at home alone while they were in Michigan.Police say it took them hours to get ahold of the parents, and by the time they called back, they said they were in Louisiana.It appears that the couple expected the mother's sister to be checking on the girl, but investigators say that didn't happen.One of their neighbors, who did not want to be identified, said after living next door for more than a year, she didn't think of the couple as bad parents."I know them as good parents, very hardworking," she said. "He travels and his job is to set up concerts. I'm sure he was working and not just going to a rock concert."Part of the problem for investigators was that there were no notes or contact information for the sister who was allegedly supposed to be looking after the daughter.Right now, the 11-year-old is staying with a neighbor while the parents sort out legal troubles.Texas law states that child endangerment occurs when a person intentionally engages in conduct that places a child younger than 15 in danger 1294

A top Republican donor vowed on Saturday to stop cutting checks for candidates and political groups that do not support a ban on assault weapons.Real estate developer Al Hoffman Jr. told CNN's Ana Cabrera on Sunday that he would not give money to lawmakers if they did not spring into action, confirming he had sent an email to GOP leaders explaining his decision.Hoffman's email came three days after a gunman killed 17 students and teachers at a Florida high school. A pair of districts in the Midwest will add Muslim women to the ranks of the US Congress for the first time.Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, will secure their respective seats in strongly Democratic districts following primary victories earlier this year that effectively decided their races.Tlaib is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, a burgeoning left-wing group that also counts New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez among its members.Omar, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, will also be the first Somali-American member. She came to the US more than two decades ago as a refugee. Tlaib actually campaigned with Omar ahead of the latter's primary race earlier this year.Omar also had the backing of Ocasio-Cortez in her primary race, and she will come to Congress having been an open critic of the Israeli government's treatment of Palestinians.Omar will take the seat vacated by Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison is leaving Congress as he vies to become Minnesota attorney general.Tlaib will fill the seat formerly occupied by Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who left office last year amid accusations of sexual misconduct. She ran unopposed on the general election ballot following her primary win.Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago. A Maryland woman says she failed a drug test the day she gave birth to her daughter and was reported to state social workers, all because she ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast.WBAL-TV in Baltimore reports that Elizabeth Eden ate a poppy seed bagel for breakfast on the morning of April 4. She went into labor later that day and went to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson to deliver her daughter.However, while she was in labor, a doctor told her she had tested positive for opiates.Poppy seeds come from the same plant which is used to make opium, heroin and other drugs, so it's common for drug tests to pick up on trace amounts of opiates.However, while the federal government measures a positive test at 2,000 nanograms a milliliter, St. Joseph Medical Center measures a positive test at 300 nanograms a milliliter. The hospital says the lower threshold for a positive test means they can treat more children born with drugs in their system — the Baltimore Sun reports that the number of babies born with drugs in their systems increased by 56.6 percent between 2006 and 2015. Eden says the hospital refused to release her daughter to her for five days following the false positive. She also says she was assigned a caseworker, who promptly dropped the case when learning of her breakfast on the morning of April 4.Eden isn't alone. In 2017, an Edgewood, Kentucky woman was assigned a social worker after she tested positive to opioids, saying she ate bagel chips with poppy seeds shortly before giving birth. A viral video bouncing around social media that alleges voter fraud in Michigan actually depicts an E.W. Scripps news photographer loading cameras and other broadcast equipment into a wagon.Conservative commentators have alleged that the video shows a man wheeling a box of mail-in ballots into the TCF Center — a Detroit convention center where Michigan officials have been counting ballots. The conspiracy alleges that the ballots are arriving late, long after deadlines have passed.However, the video actually depicts a photographer at Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit, who used his own wagon to transport cameras and other broadcast equipment from the street down to TCF Center to get his shots.The misleading videos have appeared on Texas Scorecard, a website that describes itself as "relentlessly pro-citizen, unabashedly pro-liberty," and on the YouTube page of conservative commentator Steven Crowder.There is currently no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Michigan or in other parts of the country.This story was originally published by WXYZ in Detroit. 1074
