CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - What started as a donation to help hospital heroes has blossomed into an ongoing relationship. The San Diego chapter of the North American Taiwanese Women’s Association makes a point to help in any natural disaster. While they usually would step up to help with something like hurricane relief, they made it a point to help with the pandemic.A woman connected to the group who also works at Sharp Chula Vista told the seamstresses that the medical workers at her hospital were in need of caps, so the ladies got to work. They made a batch of caps to donate, and haven’t put down their sewing machines since.Every time the ladies make a batch of caps, the medical staff take a picture with the items and send it back to the creators.“We love seeing those smiles from the medical professionals and we feel like we are really doing something for them because they work so hard for the community,” said Chunmei Carol Lin, President of the Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego.Since the start of the pandemic, the seamstresses have more than 1,000 caps for the Sharp Chula Vista staff, as of September. The Taiwanese AMerican Foundation of San Diego group and also the San Diego Taiwan Center also donated about ,000 in PPE to the hospital.Eventually, the continuing exchange of donations and pictures earned the group of women a nickname: "Sewing angels."“We thought it was maybe a one, two-time thing but here we are months into COVID and we’re still getting donations from these hard-working ladies every other week without fail,” said Leslie Del Cruz-Torio, who works as a Patient Safety Program Coordinator and distributes the caps when they arrive. 1695

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- Students in the south bay could get free lunches this June. The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Monday that its popular meal program is making a comeback. Called the “Seamless Summer Feeding Program,” free meals are being offered for most of June. According to the district, the free meals are available to anyone 18 and younger. The program runs from June 10 through June 28 Monday through Friday from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The free lunches are being offered at Montgomery High School and Sweetwater Union High. According to the district, no registration is needed. “Just come and enjoy some great food,” a flyer from the district reads. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A South Bay mother was alarmed to find a man standing over her daughter's bed early Saturday.Police say the mom discovered the strange man just after 6:30 a.m. standing over her 10-year-old daughter as she slept at their home on Madison Ave. The man ran past the mom and out the back door, running south on Madison Ave., police added.The woman's daughter was not harmed. Police say there were at least two other young girls in the house as well.Police said the suspect may have gained entry through an unlocked back door.Police are searching for the suspect, described as an either white or Hispanic man, with a bald head, and possibly tattoos on his face.Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5151. 769

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista Police identified Tuesday a man and woman who were shot by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in a deadly domestic violence dispute near a Costco. The incident happened Monday afternoon while Angelina Perez, 32 and Samuel Valdez, 31, were loading groceries in the trunk of their vehicle in the parking lot of the store on Broadway with their infant daughter in a stroller. Sean Illian, 48, approached them with a gun and opened fire, hitting Perez and Valdez several times, police said. The baby was not hurt.Witnesses in the parking lot saw Illian shoot himself in the head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. RELATED: Police: One dead, 2 hospitalized after shooting in Chula Vista Costco parking lotPerez and Valdez were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center in critical condition. Police said Perez and Illian had been in a relationship which ended badly in 2018. Perez began dating Valdez just after the breakup, investigators said. Chick-Fil-A is testing a new menu item in Arizona, and depending on how it goes, it could be rolled out to menus nationwide.Starting Monday, spicy chicken strips will be available at Chick-Fil-A restaurants in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma, the fast-food chain said.They've been under test in Philadelphia and Texas since last year.The strips come in orders of three or four, and a choice of dipping sauce.The company said it combined their original chicken strips and spicy chicken strip sandwich to create the new menu item.The strips are seasoned with a spicy blend of peppers, hand-breaded, and cooked in refined peanut oil.
