SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield.The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers.The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City council leaders unanimously approved a reform to allow local churches to build affordable housing in parking lots.The plan will allow churches and other religious institutions to choose to build affordable housing units in their parking lots to utilize large areas of the property that may go typically unused during the majority of the week.Previously, the institutions were required to offer a certain amount of parking spaces based on the location's capacity.The approval is part of a series of housing reforms the city hopes spark new affordable housing opportunities. The group UPLIFT San Diego led the effort dubbed YIGBY, or "Yes in God's Back Yard.""There are 1,100 churches in San Diego County with over 3,000 acres of property," UPLIFT leader Tom Theisen told 10News in June. A spokesperson for Sweetwater Union High School District confirms the investigations, saying the teachers are not allowed on campus at the current time.10News uncovered the investigations when a viewer reported that his daughter had been interviewed in the case. He says an assistant principal questioned her about one teacher's behavior, including conduct that could be considered sexually inappropriate.The father, who asked 10News not to use his name, says he's upset that he was not notified by the school before his daughter was brought in for questioning. "I would have preferred my wife to be there, or I could have had the chance to say no, I don't want her interviewed because these are very serious, morbid conversations to have with 12-year-old girls," the father said.He says the only communication he has had from the school is a robocall voicemail the day after the questioning to notify him that it had occurred and suggesting he ask his student about the topics discussed.A district spokesperson says they are limited in what information can be released by privacy and personnel issues. 1233
